“Hidden Bargain”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2013

Almost hidden above the "Ace" hardware store at Calle. Conde & Avenida Duarte is the Hotel Roma, one of two in the Colonial Zone. This hotel is a few yards south from Conde on Duarte and is unmarked except for a small awning. It is located in the heart of the Colonial Zone three blocks from Columbus Square. For $45 I had a large clean, AC room with queen size bed, fridge, safe, large sofa and ornate side chairs, writing desk & dresser w/mirrow. Secure and lots of hot water in the bath. "Jumbo" minimart on corner. Nosmoking building with tasteful art throughout. Had a few minor issues with the TV and AC and staff responded swiftly to my concerns.

Extremely Clean room, nice bedding and bathroom, room setting is good but the bed next to the wall faces directly against the AC in room 210, located in a secure but very expensive environment, but no parking, no breakfast, No visibly known restaurant/bar; No wifi in the room, Wify only works in the lobby with very poor signal, a little bit too expensive (65$ a night for a room with two beds), very poor customer service skills, terribly bad reception lobby, lack of tourism skills, unnoticeable/sleepy receptionists(All 3 of them during my stay for six days)

Room Tip: Try other hotels in the same area first before consierding Roma 1

There are two Roma Apart Hotels in Santo Domingo, this review is for the Roma 2 which is on Calle 19 De Marzo. All I can say is that this place was AWESOME! I stayed here for Memorial weekend 2013 and although the outside of the building and their reservation issues were less than desirable once I got into my room I was floored. INCREDIBLE. Brand new furniture, large flat screen tv's, comfortable bed and to top it all the living quarters were HUMONGOUS for hotel standards. The hotel is doing major renovations on its rooms and I was in one of the newer ones with a kitchen. It had a full stove top with 5 burners, no oven. A full size refrigerator which was great since I was able to house all my groceries without incident. The cleaning women were super attentive to my needs working with my schedule to make sure my room was clean when I finally woke up which was mid afternoon. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here and will definitely make this my staple when I return to SD.

**THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW**
-The hotel ONLY TAKES CASH and your options are RD Pesos, US Dollar or EA Euros no checks or credit cards of any type so be forewarned.
-As folks have mentioned here previously and I cannot stress this enough, their reservation procedure is a bit antiquated. Therefore once you received a reservation, make sure it has a number and CONSTANTLY EMAIL and CALL them if need be to reconfirm your reservation. Thanks to a friend of mine who had this same issue I was on top of this and the first two times they could not find my reservation but eventually did and I was then fine when I got there
-Yes they do not serve breakfast at this hotel and you can go elsewhere and pay alot less for something that includes breakfast but available breakfast is not something I care about since I am on vacation and tend to sleep in instead of getting up to eat. Also I had my own kitchen so I prepared my own meals.
-If you are a light sleeper get a room facing the back or away from El Conde since it is a busy street and the noise can be a disturbance for some.

The location is great! its in the heart of Zona Colonial.
I notice that at the reception they always ask for ID for security reasons that it's great!
Unfortunately there is not breakfast included, so for the price, probably you could find something with the same price with breakfast included.
The rooms seems to be clean with cable and frigo.
Before I was in cheaper hotel (Hostal Nomadas), i moved here to have a better big bed with TV, because in Nomadas's bed was so small i was not sleeping well.

We stayed two nights at this hotel during December. Rooms are clean but the pillows are extremely uncomfortable and the rooms close to the street can be very noisy. At $45 this is a cheap option but you can normally find good options on hotel sites for about the same. Breakfast is not included and a big minus is that they only accept cash.

We found a great deal for another hotel on Expedia and moved after two nights.

I recently enjoed a 4-night stay at the Roma II which is more updated than the Roma I down the street.

I had a single room at $45/night which is dirt cheap by US standards. The room was small, but had a flatscreen tv with cable and a nice-sized bathroom. The view of tenements was less than desirable, but for $45/night I'm not complaining.

Friends traveling with me had larger suites with kitchens and living areas for $65 & $75/night. Both were well worth the costs.

My biggest gripe with this hotel is that they have no computerized reservations and thus write in a big reservations book. They ask you to send an email to reserve a room and you never get a response. I say with all the money the owner is making, it's time to move the reservations process into the 21st century. Otherwise, it's a good basic hotel, that's centrally located and offers free cable and free wi-fi. (No pool, restaurant, no phones in the rooms or other features).

Room Tip: Call the hotel to confirm your reservation and room size at least a month in advance to avoid confus...

This was a very pleasant surprise in the middle of the Colonial Zone. Large spacious rooms, very nice staff who spoke english, and had no problems with the wi-fi. The location is prime for someone who is interested in exploring the colonial zone and beyond. Fantastic location!! No breakfast, pool, fitness center...just the room for the rate, which was a bit more then I would typically spend, but the location was worth it.
