“Stay here...if it's in you budget, it's well worth it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2010

Wow...what an exceptional property, situated on the oldest street in the Americas. The buildings are historcial gems, with completeley updated and spacious modern rooms. At least our swas, it opened up into a large courtyard outsdie the fornt and a private fountain in the back...very charming. We expericenced tremedous service form our point of arrival to departure. Although the hotel is owned by a global chain, it had all the character and charm of a hotel which is truly unique.

I've stayed at and enjoyed this hotel before. The UNESCO historic building is gorgeous and the rooms comfortable. That said, during my last trip, my ipod was stolen by (clearly) a staff member. I ate a meal at the restaurant and basically turned on my heel for five seconds to grab my ipod that I left on the table. It was gone and "nobody saw it." Even though I was the only person eating or around for miles. I complained to the front desk and manager and they basically told me to take a leap. After 26 years traveling to the DR I can say it is dangerous and crime ridden. I ran into another woman who writes for Fodor's and she had just been mugged at knife point in the street. You have no rights there so prepare for the worst if you have to go to the DR. Otherwise, don't go.

We stayed there from 19.12.09 to 22.12.09 and had a great time. It is not a "standard" Sofitel, it feels very personnal. The staff is incredible, nice swimming pool, nice breakfast buffet (hot and cold) and excellent food. The room are spacious but somehow dark and they are crazy about air co!! I live in NL and was looking forward to feeling HOT but the room was freezing if you left the air co on (even at the lowest). Rooms giving on the street arent noisy.Free Internet. Just round the corner from "El Conde" and in front of the French Embassy so location is perfect. Will definitely go back.

Overall our stay was pleasant. Something that people should be aware of is that even though we booked our stay months in advance and checked in by 4 in the afternoon, the rooms are first come first serve. We thought that we would stay in a room with a queen size bed. When we checked in though, those rooms were all filled. My husband and I slept in separate twins beds on our honeymoon...not exactly what we expected. Also, the air conditioning in our room didn't work well. Santo Domingo does not cool down much at night. After the first night, we were able to switch rooms and have a queen size bed with a/c. The breakfast was good and I highly recommend staying in the heart of the colonial zone of Santo Domingo. There are other hotels there and I would stay at a different one in the future.

Such a good surprise when you arrive in this "low cost tourism island" to discover this colonial hotel managed by Accor. If i really don't recommend holidays in this island, i would just highly recommend Hostal Pallacio Nicolas de Ovando. Perfectly located in the best district of Santo Domingo, this hotel is definitively a very good adress and an excellent value for money.

I've been especially surprised to meet a very friendly and professionnal staff at the reception, the restaurant, the bar or anywhere else in the hotel. All of them are doing their best to provide a five stars service. This is the first positive point.

The second one is about the hotel itself. The heritage building is full of charm with a lot of patios and outdoor corridors. you'll feel really relaxed and you'll be not disappointed about your room, spacious, quiet (even the ones facing the street) with nice bedrooms with separate shower and bathtub. I like the decoration, simple and elegant despite of this surprising strikes painting on the wall... Moreover, there is really no complain about the cleanliness which is excellent and the comfort of the bed is just amazing....

About the food in the hotel, i can say the breakfast buffet is not to be missed. The choice is very extended and the quality very satisfacting. Same impression for the main restaurant offering a good selection of innovative and tasty cuisine not too pricey. An other positive thing...

So, why not to give four points??? Principally cause of the pool extremly tiny and facing an ugly view on a factory and because some little details can be improved (respect of the customer for example: i was at the bar at the end of the afternoon and there was a very noisy maintenance at a time i needed to relax... no wifi in the room...).
But this hotel is really the best place to stay if you have to come to Santo Domingo and you'll have at walking distance, plenty of bars and restaurants with a good atmosphere.
