“Great wedding hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

Attended a wedding in July and stayed at the hotel. What a great choice my cousin made! The accommodations were great from the room to the grand salon were the reception took place. Although others have complained that things are expensive, what can you expect from a luxury hotel? It's a casino and if you were anywhere else, you would have to pay as much. The drinks were great, the service was wonderful and the reception was just lovely! Had a wonderful time and can't wait to visit the country again!

The location is in the middle of the city in front of the ocean. That is about all the nice things you can share about this Marriott facility. The hotel has seem better days and there needs to be an infusion of money in order to make it more attractive.

Room Tip: They will tell you that there are no upgrade available. Bunk. Ask to talk to the Manager of the Da...

This will be my first ever rating of TERRIBLE for any hotel, restaurant, or other type of company on TripAdvisor.

While attempting to bring guests into the hotel during the evening, we were told that guests were not allowed.

1. How did the gentleman know they were guests and not with us since he was not the person who checked us in earlier that day? He assumed he knew WHO they were and WHAT they were.
2. What hotel, especially a Marriott brand, controls whether someone can have a guest in their room? I am a 41 year old, educated female and not a 18 year old out of town on Spring Break.
3. When the front desk personnel was asked for his name, he pointed to his name tag and said, "You can read can't you?" I am still baffled at what would cause such an unprofessional and personal attack!
4. The front desk personnel also refused to allow us to even purchase another room for our guests.

Getting beyond the unprofessionalism was very difficult, but let me attempt to review the hotel itself.

1. The rooms are dated for a Marriott. It reads more of a basic room you might find at Ramada.
2. The tub in the shower backed up.
3. There were stains on the ceiling from water damage.
3. The breakfast is very pricey while the selection was nice.
4. The location is great for walking the boardwalk and getting nice views of the ocean.

As a whole, I could not be given a free room for one night or for several nights at this hotel. Any general manager who could allow such unprofessionalism is certainly not one I want to entrust with my vacation.

Room Tip: While the location is great, the hotel is average and the service deplorable.

Please accept our apologies for not been able to meet your expectations. Safety is our first and utmost priority and sometimes it does not go along with guests expectations.

As the city grows and the economy strives with the world recession; the local population suffers its consequences and become more creative in finding ways to make up for the difference and foreigners may easily become a target.

Our hotel visitor’s policy is printed in the registration card; also with the key pocket, this way if any of our guests are not in agreement with it, they may look for other hotel options in the city.

In regards to the condition of our property you are absolutely right; we are outdated in preparation of a major renovation to start in the beginning of 2014 with an investment of $35 million dollars which will put our hotel aligned with the Renaissance Brand.

Once again please accept our deepest apologies, we are using your valuable comments to better train our front office personal.

Cordially,

Eduardo Reple

After spending 6 days in this property....
The Good: Very low rate, lots of night activity, casino on site with live band, right next to the sea, breakfast is quite good, incredible Dominican Republic coffee, good food selection at the on-site restaurant, club/concierge/elite level available and host can connect you with tours directly (but you pay the tour operator not the hotel), did I mention food was delicious? Yes it was. There are a few restaurants, stores and other amenities within walking distance, but you do have to be cautious at what time of the day (never at night) you walk and which direction you go according to the locals, and always always bring your umbrella along any walking trip. In the casino they treat you very well, not only is an open bar but they bring hot food plates to all the people there (chicken with pasta, rice, etc.). They have a concert hall and ballrooms so there is always something going on, even if you are not attending, just been downstairs with all that night life sort of feels a little Vegas-type. Room Air Conditioning is the quite unit type and works very well so you'll enjoy this in a hot & humid place like the DR.
The Bad: Having been in Marriotts all over, it is the only one that does not feel like a Marriott/Renaissance but more like a place ran by a local entrepreneur. Rates do not show the 28% added tax rates the DR has, so consider that when looking at the final bill (even if you redeem points/award nights still pay like $30USD/night), service by the staff is either absolutely wonderful or absolutely awful (love it or hate it, no middle ground) - seems to me is up to the employee you are dealing with and not by hotel policy (rare for a Marriott again). By the sea but NO beach, so if you bring your bathing suit is either for the small pool or to go on a paid "excursion" to one of the georgeous Dom Rep beaches (still a 30min to 1 hr drive). On-site taxis available and take all credit cards or can be charged to the room, but waaay too expensive. Rarely, but rooms are serviced/cleaned/made by both male and female employees, and I got the impression too many people enter your room when you are gone so just in case pack up the in-room safe with anything you'd rather prefer not to loose.. just in case. No spa on site, and it is about 40min to 1 hour to the Airport depending on traffic. If you have speakers for you iPod DO bring them along, they only play one music type regardless where you go (except the Hard Rock cafe, but is a $10-30USD cab ride depending on traffic and time of the day). Merengue/Bachata music is nice the first 2-3 days but after that you'll need something else (in addition to my headphones I always carry a small set of speakers).
The Ugly: Hotel facilities are just about ready to start falling appart. For what is worth, Hotel does not smell bad and is very clean, but carpets are old beyond belief, you'll see the furniture in the rooms is exactly what Marriotts used to have 10-15 years ago (even with the big Zenith TV sets) just as if they moved it over this property from their US locations, my shower plumbing was quite an adventure: shower was shifting from hot water to cold water by the minute and you could hear all kind of noises in the morning through pipes in the roof/walls. Renaissance are always top of the line so I was surprised. Also, if you do get the bad-service type of employee, just count to 10, or 20, or 100, what ever works for you but avoid any type of confrontation.

Room Tip: Try to get the concierge/club level. Do consider that what ever rate you book, 28% taxes will be add...

We stayed at the Jaragua a week ago, just came back, omg we did had fun!
Service is excellent, staff treat you like you deserve, no all of them know English but they do try to please you!
Rooms aren't amazing but they are ok, cause the furniture need some upgrade, which I heard will be staring on January 15 this 2014 .We had ocean view , and our awesome Maid MARIA, she is the best maid ever! She organize and make everything look just better.

As stated above, the standout for this hotel is in its services. All the workers that I encountered at the Jaragua were quite friendly and more than willing to assist in any way possible. The primary reason I’m giving it 3, rather than 4 stars is that the rooms seemed somewhat outdated compared to the price paid. Though the rooms are clean, and the bed was comfortable, our room was missing the updated décor and amenities that are usually provided at similarly priced hotels.

Pros:
-great location (right on the Malecon and in close proximity to the Zona Colonial)
-prompt, friendly service from staff
-ample seating around pool

Cons:
-outdated rooms
-parking can be difficult when they are hosting large events (weddings, conferences)
-drinks at the hotel bar/poolside bar are expensive

*Quick tip: If you want internet service in your room, go to the lobby and connect to the free wifi. It will then give you a 24 hr passcode that you can use to connect with when you return to your room.

Last month I went for a business trip to Santo Domingo. Two years ago I stayed at the Napolitano. A good hotel, but I was curious at Jarajua because I heard a lot of good things. And there wasn't much price difference. Checking in on monday the 27th of may: The young man at the check-in counter offered me a free up-grade to a executive room on the 5th floor. This room was awesome. I had a nice view at the west-side of the sky line of Santo Domingo; a big king-size bed and a nice and clean bath room. You know that feeling when you check in and you get a good feeling immediately? That is what I had with this hotel. And the ammenities, wow!! A large gym with all the equipment you need for a good work out, a big pool, stores, business center and a fantastic restaurant where I had a good break fast. I had dinner at the sports bar while reading a book and watching Miami Heat struggling against the Pacers. And the casino!! Gosh, no words. Even if you're not a gambler (which I'm not) then you can't stand the temptation of trying your luck at one of the tables. In the casino there was a dance floor and a live band playing. And there were the most georgous women of Santo Domingo. Oh yes, I had fun and business went well. I'm planning to go in october this year. And yes, I will be staying at the Jarajua :) :)

Room Tip: Your credit card is enough to pay for all your beverages and food. Even at the casino it won't b...
