“Best budget hotel in Santo Domingo-NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH HOSTAL BELLA EPOCA”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2014

I am a Peace Corps volunteer here in the DR and this is the hotel that Peace Corps uses to put us up when we're in the capital. Most of us stay here on our own too. They have regular rooms (1 or 2 queen sized beds) and bunk bed style rooms for groups of backpackers or travelers. Hotel is clean and quiet, staff is friendly (owned by a dominican couple) and it is centrally located (in a safe area). 1 block from Maximo Gomez, 1 block from the malecon and a 15 minute walk to the conde. Close to the metro too!
Breakfast is included. They also have full kitchens on each floor and a washing machine for guests to use. Fast wifi on every floor and a killer view from their rooftop deck.
This hotel is NOT to be confused with the Hostal Bella Epoca. That place is terrible. Don't stay there.

In the Dominican republic, it's possible to do better than this hotel does for the price. Everything is OK, some things, like the breakfast buffet, are better than OK, but for the price customers are entitled to expect a little better. The rooms are not bad, mine was certainly large enough, but with very little light, and a strange shape due to the ceiling on two different levels. Also the hotel was not particularly efficient or quick in solving a problem with my credit card, swallowed by a cash dispenser near reception, and certainly did not give a reassuring impression (in the end it was alright, though). Location not bad, but some way out of the centre and away from the nightlife.

As a woodworker, loved the expansive use of hardwoods. My wife and baby also like the spaciousness of the rooms and the staff was very friendly and kind to us, with opening doors and lending help even fixing natural fresh squeeze juice for our 9 month old. I hope they reuse the- now hard to get and expensive hardwoods by reworking and restaining them. A good renovation could make this a beautiful place again. Carpets, curtains, wallpaper, bathrooms ,beds, and pillows(the worst item) need replacing. We stayed Nov-early Dec 2013. Hope to come back someday after the remodel. Thanks to the staff for their great service. Good luck and success on the remodel.

Room Tip: Rooms on south side are quieter, but the ocean side has better views, great balcony.

The hotel needs a renovation (it may have been great 30 years ago). Rooms are horrible, full of dust, carpets full of stains and not even attached to the floor anymore. Wall papers are full of stains, furniture is old. And I've seen many rooms. You can't open the window and there's no air circulation in the halls as well. It smells bad. Luckily I had a room with a balcony that I left open all the time. Pool was ok, the restaurant has decent food, staff is great. When I asked to have a room like the pictures on the website they told me if they posted the truth no one would come. Excuse me????!!! They are about to close, so do not hope for renovation. Do not recommend. Would no go back. Stayed as much time as possible away from the hotel.

Room Tip: stay away of this hotel. But if there is no way, choose a room with a balcony and with ocean view. A...

I have stayed at much, much worse for much more money...especially in the Caribbean. If
faded grandeur is what you want this is your place. The hotel was empty so I guess I was
given one of the balcony rooms overlooking the Malecon. It was huge. Everything worked--
TV, WiFi, Shower, AC (with a vengeance). Absolutely no complaints. It would make a
great set for an Eric Ambler or Graham Greene movie.

I was booked there for my business stay in Santo Domingo. Large outdated business place, full of local visitors, in conference and the like. OK but need some modernization and far from Old City. I would have prefer a renovated old Inn downtown.

Yes it might need a bit of renovation but I wasnt staring at the ceiling I was enjoying the great pools and there sauna which was very sanitary. Stayed at the last floor which requires a key to go up. as soon the elevator doors open you have a coffe machine and unlimited liquor. The rooms we had was amazing with the ocean view. Loved the fact the la malecon street is right across from the hotel and it is safe to walk the strip. maids and helpers are great with providing extra towels or nesecities with out being judgemental. Complimentery Breakfast is amazing with true dominican food, Its no fun when others hotels deny the opportunity of enjoying there cultures. Great price and close to the strips and easy driving to boca chica.

Room Tip: Choose the Last Floor and ocean view for the better thrill
