We booked an all day private tour with Levi Baron of Bumpiing Tours during a port visit in Dominica in July 08. Our first stop was Middleham Falls which was about a 1 hour, 10 minute hike for our group of 8 (which included ages 11 through 47). There are a few stops along the way where you can drink pure water and one stretch full of vines where you can practice your best Tarzan impersonation. We were the only ones at the falls when we arrived (perfectly planned by Levi) and spent almost an hour there. The current is strong, the water refreshing, and there is a cave you can swim to and use to jump into the pool below the falls.
Afterwards, we headed to Titou Gorge (a short drive away), which is a only a 5 minute walk. This is where parts of Pirates of the Caribbean Two was filmed, and it is breathtakingly beautiful. You either jump about 10 feet into the gorge, or walk in further down and then swim through an other-worldly gorge, with sheer cliffs rising up on both sides, the sounds of the waterfall and the birds in the rainforest overhead as background. There is some swimming required here, although there is a point about midway where the water is less than knee deep. It's a good idea to take a waterproof camera into Titou Gorge to try and capture the beauty....we, unfortunately, didn't have one with us.
The entire trip was a visual feast and you constantly felt like you were on some exotic movie set....except it was all real. We would most definitely visit Middleham Falls and Titou Gorge again!
