The Guiyave is a delighted place to eat and relax. Perched on the first floor above its sister’s takeaway, you feel you are miles away from Roseau’s crowded traffic. The Guiyave is located in a secluded spot at 15 Cork Street one of Roseau’s busiest. This might sound a contradiction in term, but those who know Roseau well would know exactly what I’m talking about.
Sitting on the balcony watching multitude of vehicles and people go by, you get the feel as if you are sitting in someone dining room. Many of the old colonial buildings have similar designs as the Guiyave with hanging plants over its balcony that also give the diner some kind of seclusion and privacy.
Walking up to the steep steps of this quant restaurant you’d never expect to find such lovely environment. The first thing that is apparent is the cleanliness of the place and the lovely greetings by staff. The layout of this small restaurant belies its size. Luckily, the day I eat there there was no crowd to worry over.
On the day, the Guiyave had a choice of different dishes, soup of the day (that seems to be a popular thing right throughout the islands), lovely fresh salad and other cooked local vegetables; and a wide choice of ice cream and cakes for desert. My choice for the day was their vegetable soup and a homemade roll. The soup was a mix of callaloo and pumpkin which was very tasty and so was the roll. Perhaps the choice of what to eat was not only for my culinary taste, but without prejudice found the food ‘kinda’ pricey. Perhaps, this was the reason for the small crowd of diners. Mind you, the story of this place was of a popular haunt for Dominica middle class diners. You can see why and not just for the quality of the food.
Expensive it might be, and out of reach for most Dominicans. Perhaps that is the purpose, but the overseas visitors with their dollars and sterling currency won’t see it that way. I would highly recommend.
