I stayed at Fort Young as part of a dive package. It was perfect. I will warn you that expect to walk up and down steps a lot. It’s also a little maze like. Follow the signs if you are easily turned around. The hotel is constructed out of an old fort and you can plainly see where the original walls still are. There is an elevator but it doesn't reach all the floors at the hotel. I stayed in the older part of the hotel and loved it. The windows were made of screen material so I could lie in bed and listen to all the wild life come alive. Beautiful. All the rooms have AC. The bathroom was a little dated but it worked fine for what it needs to do. The showers come fully equipped with shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Sitting out on the balcony in the mornings was perfect. The older rooms do have a limited sea view; I was on the second floor and had a view over the newer section which was all I needed. They do have a live band on Friday night but they finish early and it didn't disturb us at all.
All the staff were willing to help and extremely friendly. However, the food service is slow but the food comes out warm and tasty. The bar has a limited menu and is good value (Price is in Eastern Caribbean Dollars) but has a great range, sandwiches, quesadilla, burgers and my personal favorite jerk chicken (The head chef is from Jamaica). The Rum punch is also a must. After a long day exploring and diving there was nothing better to come back to. They have a meet the manager on Monday nights with free rum punch and then a happy hour on a Friday for discounted drinks. The restaurant has a good menu with a lot of choice. It is a little more expensive but worth the money. Breakfast has a great range of food. Fresh fruit, cereal, bread, local specials, eggs, bacon and omelettes. There are also excellent local restaurant if you want to try something a little different.
The activities were perfect. The activities desk is willing to answer and questions and they have a great variety of activities to do. The diving was excellent. The dive comes directly to the hotel to pick you up. After the diving there are 2 tubs to wash gear and then plenty of hanging space for it all to dry. I will say that it is in the open and anyone can walk past, but I felt safe leaving everything there. They then carry everything into the shop and bring it back out in the morning. A mesh bag is a must for all your stuff. Everything looks the same when you come from the same dive shop. On the last day we went for a tour of the Island and it’s beautiful. We went to Ti Tou Gorge and then to Trafalgar Falls, must do trips. The guides were excellent. I just wish that I had spent more time exploring the Island.
If I could I would be back there sipping a Rum punch watching the sun go down at Fort Young. The only thing that let the whole trip down was the airline. If possible find another way to get there other than LIAT then do it. We went on national TV to complain about LIAT, lets just say all our bags made it back with us.
