The four or five acres of this rainforest lodge encompass what may be the MOST beautiful tropical botanical gardens in the world. The sloping hillside gardens feature a 90-foot waterfall, dozens and dozens of tall tree ferns, cacao trees (chocolate), bromeliads, hot volcanic springs and streams 9and warm geothermal pools for soaking, cool mountain streams with a second, stunning, two-tiered waterfall and cool pools for soaking, every sort of tropical plant, vine, breadfruit trees, hummingbirds, paw-paws (papaya), etc. All in three of four acres lovingly developed by Anne and Cuthrbert Jno. Baptiste.
The restaurant and lodging buildings are present, blend with the environment, and are surrounded by and covered with the vegetation. The rooms are basic with mosquito nets and no screens, louvered shutters, and a breeze (sometimes brisk) helping to cool. The weather alternates between showers and intermittent sunshine about every eight minutes. The staff was very nice, courteous, and helpful. We liked the cheeseburgers.
This is a great spot for photography and the gardens really should be cloned and duplicated throughout the tropics. Trafalgar Falls is 1/3 of a mile further up the road.
The principle drawbacks are these: This is not lodging for the traveler expecting luxuries. We wish that the rooms had air-condtioning, for example (and even screens would have been nice). Secondly, nearby Roseau has transitioned in recent decades from a large village to a small city, so that the least agreeable thing about Papillote is having to reach it by driving through Roseau.
We applaud the Jno. Baptistes and their staff for offering visitors one of the most beautiful tropical botanic gardens in the world.... and we thank them for our stay.
