In early 2007, I started searching for a location for my fiancé and I to have our wedding. During my research, I came across an article in Forbes travel online, listing the top 10 eco-destinations. After reading that article, we settled on Dominica as the location.
If you have ever been to the Caribbean, you may have come across the idea, “seen one Caribbean island, you’ve seen them all.” Dominica is the exception. We booked a trip to the island in August, 2007 and planned to scout several locations; Jungle Bay Resort and Spa on the south-east side of the island, Fort Young Hotel in Roseau (the capital), and Calibishe Lodge on the north-east side. I want to first give an overall impression of Dominica and then I will describe our experience at each of the locations in separate reviews.
Firstly, the island, travel to it and traveling around it are not for the faint at heart. Dominica is truly untouched and pristine, with rugged terrain and equally rugged coastlines. There are few sandy beaches unless you confine yourself to the north-west side. Be prepared to have an adventurous time, starting with the flight to the island. There are no direct flights to Dominica from the U.S. As a result, you will fly into San Juan, P.R. and have a 3 hour layover on average. There is a nice sports bar just outside the P.R. airport to pass the time. The connecting flight is a twin turboprop that must take a wild approach to line up for landing on a rather short runway. The adventure starts when you see Dominica’s steep cliffs and mountainous terrain as you approach. This island is beautiful! If you wanted to see a place that is as pristine and unspoiled since the time of Columbus, you have found it. The approach to the airport winds through valleys with ridges lining both sides until the plane takes a steep decent and soft flair to land on the runway. To give you an idea of how short the landing is, when we arrived, there was a private jet that overshot the landing and had ended up on the beach. Make sure you give your compliments to your pilot when you disembark.
While in Roseau, be sure to walk around and take in the sights. For trinkets and the like, make your way over to the open air market just off the cruise ship portage. A must is to visit the Ruins Rock Café, where you will find every spice known to man and can chill out to Reggae music and sip on any number of hundreds of different spiced bush rums. If you need any supplies for your trip around Dominica, make sure to visit any of the local grocery or drug stores. The island wide open air market is held every week on Sunday morning, where you can see or buy all of the fresh fruit, produce, spices and just about everything else that the island natives offer. Ask the locals where the best places are to have lunch or have a drink and be prepared to expand your tastes, you will not be disappointed.
