We tried to book one of the Calabishie Lodges but none were available and we were offered the Guest House as an alternative.
Booking on-line was easy and was quickly confirmed.
We arrived in Calabishie after spending two weeks in other parts of Dominica. The view from the Guest House is truly wonderful but we were a little surprised to find that it is at the top of a very steep hill, about 15 mins walk from the Lodge where we had arranged to have breakfast and dinner.
Fortunately we had decided to rent a car so the hill was no real problem.
Parking can be a little tricky when all of the guests have cars.
On the first evening we went to the restaurant for dinner only to find that it was full with an estimated wait of up to two hours for a table - A breakdown in communication was blamed as the bookings are taken in Belgium. The Guest House was nice and seemed to be pitched at the "Self catering" market but as we don't go on holiday to cook, the kitchen was only used to heat water as there was no running hot water in the bathroom / shower.
For the remainder of our stay, there were no further problems with tables at the restaurant but the service was dreadfully slow.
The restaurant is unable to accomodate all of the guests and the kitchen is too small for the demands placed on it. Even when we had the "Special" it took an hour and a half to be served three courses and sometimes two hours. When it arrived, the food was very good.
The room was not cleaned at all during our stay of eight nights.
Spare sheets were provided for us to change and we were told to leave them outside the room with any towels and refuse, and they would be attended to. Ours sat outside for two days with the result that an animal clawed open the refuse bags.
Calabishie is a great base from which to explore the northern part of the island and is very handy for the airport. The Guest House is comfortable and has the finest view in the village. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay but felt let down by the slow catering - Maybe we were spoiled by coming directly from the Papilotte Wilderness Retreat where they really have got it right.
