We booked Sea View apartments after reading the glowing reviews on this site. After staying there, frankly we're surprised. Our party consisted of 3 adults and one child. We arrived in Calibishie for the last 4 nights of our two week visit to Dominica. Check in for the apartments is at the Calibishie Lodges. The two properties are owned by the same owners and they seem to have a monopoly on lodging in Calibishie.
We were initially surprised how far the apartments are from the lodges. The apartments are perched on a steep hill accessed by a narrow road which then turns into a rough and muddy road which we have pictured. Although we overheard the owner tell another guest that it's a quick 8 minute walk, we think you would laugh when you see the walk!
We rented the two bedroom lower apartment. The view from the apartments is indeed spectacular. We enjoyed eating on the balcony in the provided table and chairs to take full advantage of the view. Currently there is a two story home being constructed in front of the apartment and we hope that it doesn't ruin the view. The balcony had lots of dying millipedes on it we assume from some sort of spraying. The owners share the balcony which is seperated by lattice. The apartment is furnished with a small table and four chairs (both inside and out), a couch, two beds, a tv, a fridge, and stove (no oven). After staying at two really unique places in the Eastern and Southern parts of the island we found the apartment to be small and plain looking. We thought it felt like a basic beach cottage. There are a few small local pictures hanging in the living room but that's it. With all the great culture we would have expected some masks or prints of colorful art. The bedrooms feel motel like and are especially stark with their windows facing the road/parking area. The power and water was out when we arrived which is common in Dominica. There was a large emergency lantern that did not function on the two different times we need to use it even after a full day of charging. When we inquired the owner if there was candles we were told no complete with an odd look. If the power does go off, it doesn't usually stay off for more than a few hours. Bring flashlights.
Although the apartment comes equiped it feels in rather a stingy manner. For example, for 4 nights for 4 people, 2 rolls of toilet paper were provided with no extras in the bare cupboards. There were exactly 4 towels, 4 plates, 4 glasses etc., no extras of anything. We were promised clean sheets on Wednesday but that never arrived. The stove is really annoying. Our campstove works better. It requires lighting by match, but if you have the window open to enjoy the breeze the flames blow out. If you try to adjust it to a lower temperature, the flame blows out. We were issued two small boxes of matches, you should plan to use many of them. Pots and pans were provided. There was no colander but there was a cutting board that should be thrown out because it was so filthy. The bathroom has a shower only and a tricky one at that. We were instructed upon arrival to never touch the center knob. From all the showers we used on the island this was the only one that came with a learning curve and most times we enjoyed a cold to lukewarm shower. When you turn the shower on it sprays almost straight out , so if you're still wearing clothes, you'll be wet when you turn it on. The bathmat had a nasty stain on it that we hope was a smashed bug. Good luck with it!
The lodges down the hill have a very nice restaurant, and we enjoyed a great dinner there, although it is slightly on the pricey side compared to other places we ate at on the island. It feels upscale. They require advance notice for dinner (as do most places in Dominica). There is a decent market with supplies close to the turn for the apartments.
Last we would like to comment on the owners. We read about how wonderful they were and were surprised to meet such cold people. The owners of this property are excellent self promoters that regularly read this site as it is important source of customers for them. Although the owners have a wealth of information about Dominica and efficiently run their endevours, personality wise we found them cold. Whenever we needed to ask for an "extra" like toilet paper, we were greeted with pursed lips and the feeling that we were putting them out. We have stayed all over the world, and we don't think that we have ever written such a bad review. We just feel that others have stated that this place walks on water, where we really found it mediocre. If you need to stay in Calibisihie, this place or the lodges are it. Maybe the lodges are better...maybe the owner just didn't like us. Hope your luck is better. And we hope that when you arrive there you will see that we were being honest.
Don't miss a day at Batibou Bay, Pointe Babtiste, or a drive to the North towards Vielle Casse while your in the Calibishie area.
