June 17th, 2008. My wife and I just returned from a 9 day stay at Crescent Moon Cabins. If you are looking for a relaxing yet adventurous trip, complete with 5 star dining and proprietors that make you feel like family, then this is the place! Tucked away on a beautiful ridge overlooking the Caribbean ocean, we enjoyed cool upland temperatures as we sat in the open air dining area and ate some of the most incredible food we have ever tasted. No doubt, being on vacation always makes everything seem better, but the food here is truly outstanding. Ron, and his wife Jean along with their daughter Tiana and her partner David and son Leo, are incredible hosts, and are always there for you, whatever you might need (from homemade soap to bush tea and wonderful rum punch). There are so many things to do and see on this island and we barely scratched the surface, but whatever you do, always be sure you are back at the cabins for dinner as nothing on the island compares to the meals you can get here. Crescent Moon’s hosts are very knowledgeable about the island and are very helpful in setting up day trips and arranging for things such as diving, snorkeling, hiking or a day at the beach. Don’t bother renting a car. The roads are narrow, curvy and not well marked. Crescent Moon will make all driving arrangements and it is very affordable. You also get to look at the scenery instead of worrying about who is coming around the next blind curve. This island is not for those looking for luxury and creature comforts, it is more of an “eco-island” in that there are no big resorts, fast food restaurants (accept for the KFC in Roseau) or highways cutting through the island. The pace of life is slow, relaxed and everyone is friendly. Take some hikes to beautiful waterfalls, spend time talking to the locals, drink some bush tea or bush rum, enjoy a Kubuli or two (the local beer). Oh, and make sure to try Ron’s cocoa tea, it’s wonderful!

We stayed for 2 nights at the Crescent Moon Cabins during our 3 week visit to Dominica. This was one out of the 7 accomodations we stayed at.

CMC can be reached via a rough and windy road, at an elevation where the climate is less hot than at sea level. At the property, several cottages are located in a nice garden with lots of flowers and a very large greenhouse. Spacing between the four cottages is small, we were unlucky to have some noisy neighbours the first night. The private veranda had great views over the valley to the ocean, the perfect spot to open a bottle of wine. At night, bats were flying and and out, but these friendly creatures kept the mosquitoes away. Less welcome were some mice, looking for our leftover bread.

As the previous reviewers already indicated, this is an eco-style type of acomodation. This means for instance that the swimming pool is not crystal clear. But we got lots of things in return. The American owners were very friendly people and the food was absolutely marvelous! Owner Ron is an enthousiastic cook, we loved his creative spicy dishes. Even breakfast was a real treat, accompanied by some fabulous fresh coffee made by locally grown beans. It was very nice to wander around the property visiting the goats, chickens and the greenhouse.

With the right attitude this accomodation will probably please you as much as it did to us. Compared with our other accomodations at the island, we found price level a little high though.

We recently returned from a week at Crescent Moon Cabins. If you've looked at the other reviews here, and the CMC websites, you have an accurate sense of what to expect: a remote eco-lodge with beautiful views, simple but very comfortable cabins and public areas, attentive low-key service from the (fascinating) owners, and excellent food using local ingredients. The pool and hot tub are filled with river water, emptied into the greenhouse, and are crude by luxury-hotel standards, but that's not why you choose an eco-lodge in the Dominican bush! Yes, there are critters around -- birds (many, including parrots), bats zooming through the cabins at dusk (harmless and fun to watch), and a couple of very friendly, ubiquitous watch dogs who love attention but are not pushy about it. We encountered very few bugs, probably because of the great Caribbean breeze, the bats, and the birds!

Positive surprise. We mentioned in an e-mail to CMC that we enjoy relaxing with a (very dry) martini before dinner. After a long travel day getting to CMC, we retired briefly to our rooms to get settled and change into tropical wear -- upon returning to the main public area, a very nice (Grey Goose and Beefeater) self-service martini bar was set up for us. Wow, was that one tasty!

Negative surprise. Driving on Dominica (totally sober) was nuts -- you drive on the left side of narrow, winding, pot-holed roads with deep gutters. The locals go way too fast, are impatient with slow-poke visitors, and pass on blind turns. As country folk, we are no doubt spoiled by lots of stress-free driving, but fasten your seat belts and prepare for an adventure on the roads.

“Simply Extraordinary”

Crescent Moon Cabins

Mar 27, 2008

My husband and I stayed at CMC in February 2008 to celebrate our 13th wedding anniversary. This was our second trip to Dominica, having stayed previously with friends who now reside on the island. CMC is exactly as all the others postings indicate - PARADISE! We were able to see a great deal of the island and got some fantastic tips from Ron on exactly what to take in. Our hosts were exceptional - very informative but nowhere near overbearing. It was as if they appeared just when we needed them. And the food - EXQUISITE! Dining in the midst of the rainforest on the most delicious meals I have ever had was an extraordinary experience. Dominica is beautiful and filled with warm and friendly people. It is more than a vacation - Dominica is an experience. We will return to this unspoiled island and CMC as soon as possible!!!

Guadeloupe

We travelled from Guadeloupe to Dominica for 3 days for my husband's birthday and stayed at Crescent Moon Cabins. Nicely secluded and pleasant for nature lovers like our 10-year son is. Accomodation was rustic but comfortable enough although I expected the cabins to be of higher standard. Ron, the Chef sprinkled originality all over the food he cooked and service was fast. An excellent opportunity to try different flavours and tastes; suitable even for the non culinary adventurous! Tiana was helpful and responded promptly to our requests. It is better to be a dog-lover though (I am not) as they wander about even when you eat. We were disappointed at the state of the "pool" and hot tub, when we eventually figured out that's what they were - indeed, did not look like they were cleaned regularly nor the water changed as often it should. We did meet a fantastic German couple on holiday too and they contributed a lot to making our stay in Dominica as enjoyable. Would I consider going back to Crescent Moon Cabins? Frankly I doubt it; this once was enough!
