seacliff cottages are a great place to stay to explore the island. they are on the northern side of the island so the ocean is rougher. great swimming on the beach downhill and in the crystal clear river that enters there. Calibishie is the village nearby, 15 min by foot, one of the neatest little towns on the entire island. we got food, advice, know how from the local grocers and little tourist info. Seacliff cottage is a well organized, safe place to relax, has all you need, its simple, clean, solar hot water, propane gas cooking range, TV and internet (we have two teens!!!). Gwen and Jim are a great resource which you need, since this is not your average vacation. you need to be willing to explore, drive really bad roads (we had a 4x4, but some brave souls travel by bus!), be flexible, ask a lot of questions, see some awesome nature (nobody there but you!!!) and poverty...if you like hotel style pampering, this is not your place (no big hotels on the entire island!). We are very eco-oriented, loved to observe the cockroaches in the compost bin, picked fresh fruits from the grounds, took tours with local guides (thanks Prim!). English is main language, but French works too, US $ accepted everywhere.
