As experienced cruisers, we researched activities at each port on TripAdvisor prior to our vacation (Carnival Freedom, by the way). We never book shore excursions through the cruise line because they charge far too much money and they don't always offer the most fun activities you can find in a particular destination. Case in point: Zapata Flyboard Caribbean.
The reviews were all good. Even though about half were written in Dutch, we trusted the ratings. I'm glad we did! After checking out the posts and videos on the company's Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/zapataflyboardcaribbean), the decision was fairly easy to make to contact the company and book a visit. I did so through Facebook, which proved to be a very effective and easy way to do it.
Within 24 hours of sending my initial private message to Zapata Flyboard, I got a very friendly response from Stijn, who I believe is the owner of the operation. He was absolutely accommodating and extremely friendly. Booking was a piece of cake! Since I explained I was coming from a cruise ship, Stijn offered maximum flexibility in terms of timing since he knew cruise ships are sometimes late. That came in handy as we arrived about 20 minutes after the agreed upon time.
The only downside to the visit was the fact that Jan Thiel Beach, where Zapata Flyboard is located, is far from the cruise port. It took about 1/2 hour to get there in a taxi and the round-trip fare was US $60. But it honestly was 100% worth it. Our taxi driver actually waited for us for the hour we were there, but if you have some extra time I highly recommend spending more time at Jan Thiel Beach. It's just beautiful.
When we got there, Wim and two other members of the team were waiting for us and immediately began doing some dry-land training with our 14-year-old son. Within minutes he was suited up and in the water. Wim couldn't have been nicer and all were about as friendly as can be. The fact that there were three people out in the water with our son set our minds at ease in the event that anything went wrong. Nothing did, but there was plenty of support just in case.
Seriously, our son had the most amazing time flyboarding. It was really easy for him to learn, and he spent a lot of time just having the time of his life.
When they got back in after about 50 minutes in the water we paid, thanked everyone and were on our way.
We had so much fun, and the staff were so incredibly friendly, that we made a strong recommendation to our cruise ship's shore excursion staff to consider offering flyboarding as an option.
Thanks to TripAdvisor, Zapata Flyboard and its wonderful staff, our visit to Curacao was a highlight of the entire trip!
