“Spend Your Money Elsewhere”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2014

I have to preface this review by saying that I never actually made it to the Strand so am speaking relative to my experience with the property manager, Nanelia Walfenzao, and not the property itself. I booked with the Strand on a trip I planned and intended to take were it not for a personal emergency - the other 5 in my party did however make it to Curacao. A few weeks prior to the trip Nanelia contacted me to tell me that the property had been damaged in a storm and she would have to relocate us to a different property (which she was sure to mention that was not at all obligated to do, she could have left us to fend for ourselves). We were happy to oblige as she provided two reasonable alternatives - one a comparable apartment at a different property with which she offered to pay for our rental car; the other a beautiful 4 bedroom villa that she pointed out cost much more and would be a steal since she would not be charging us any extra for. We opted for the latter despite it being further from town since we had 6 people in the party and four bedrooms would have afforded us more space. As mentioned, I ended up not being able to make the trip but the others in my party did. Upon arrival they noted that there appeared to be no damage whatsoever to the property (if a bad storm had rendered our apartment uninhabitable wouldn't there have been some sign of this??) and it was mentioned that all of the parking spots were full so they couldn't accomodate 1 of our 2 rental cars. The point I'm making is that it seemed more likely that she overbooked and relocated us vs. incurring damage that forced them to relocate us. I come to this conclusion about her dishonesty because, upon arrival at the villa, the group was told that they would have to pay $25 extra per day to use the 4th bedroom. Not knowing that one in our party spoke Dutch, they overheard the housecleaner and the property owner talking about the "spoiled prima donnas that insisted on having their own bedrooms". Now I don't necessarily consider $250 extra for the 10 days a lot of money but I DO consider someone's word and important part of the experience. When I emailed Nanelia about this, she denied ever having told me there were 4 bedrooms which was a flat out lie and she refused to refund them (despite me having an email where I confirmed with her that there would be no extra charge for the villa). All this and I'm told this "beautiful villa" was very sparsely furnished and they never had hot water the entire stay despite a call to Nanelia. Again, clearly this is not a review of the Strand property itself but rather of the experience I had with the property manager Nanelia Walfenzao. Provided she is still managing the Strand, I would highly recommend you spend your hard earned money at one of the many more worthy establishments with honest people in their employ.

This condo and grounds were great. Safe, new, modern luxuries. Serious jaw dropping from the condo, three bedrooms, 4 baths. Great for our extended family (2 kids, 2 grandparents and us). The protected beach cove was great for kids. The broken glass in the sand- not so much (not from the condo, just what washes up). We went to another local beach and it was much worse, but there was a lot of garbage through out the island. The beach could use a bit more raking for rocks and glass. The condo was very nice, but there was no phone, and our cells only had wifi, so it was hard to get a hold of someone for pillow cases, blankets, towels...The maids came every 3 or 4 days depending on who you ask. They never fixed the DVD player that never worked, which wasn't the end of the world since they had multiple channels, but it would have nice for our kids. It didn't seem quite tailored to travelers. We didn't have pot holders, soaps, toilet paper, dish towels enough blankets for all the beds (things you don't really want to have to buy on vacation). We had to buy our own dish soap, washing soap (which we hope was the correct kind for the machines) didn't know how to use the Spanish controls. The one odd thing was the doors didn't offer privacy because of the wooden slats that wouldn't close. The property managers were nice and did set up and deliver a rental car. Which we suggest, taxi's are hard to find off the path and $$$. Expect $30-40 from the airport. There is a gate, and security guards at night. The grocery store was close, walking distance, but they aren't too friendly, maybe because we were interrupting their eating while working. We actually found that most everyone on the island was unfriendly in customer service from the restaurants to the airport ticket handlers and SLOOOOW. This island is still trying to draw in American tourist, but they have some learning to do. Still a great vacation, we scuba'd off the beach to wall dives (the whole island is), lots of life even in the rocks. The aquarium was close and great. And it's worth a trip up North to some of the pay to go beaches, very picturesque. The town had a lot to see and do and felt safe for the most part, we never ventured at night, and did have 1 creeper watch us leave a bank. Awesome warm water and weather. We hope to come back in a few years, and we will come back to the Strand!

Room Tip: All good rooms!

We typically rent condos when traveling as we have two small kids (10 months & 4 yr. old). We picked The Strand because it was centrally located on the island and looked like a fairly new building. It was a GREAT choice. The apartment we picked was on a second floor overlooking the private beach and pool. (see pic) Each morning we enjoyed breakfast on the balcony and twice we cooked dinner. The condo had three rooms, and 2.5 bathrooms. It included two play pens, and this was great as we could bring one to the beach and leave another in the room. They also had a high chairs for feedings.

Nanelia was our contact and she was great! We texted her with questions and she gave us all the details on the building and the areas to see, she was our local expert. The building has security and a pool attendant this helps keep everything safe & secure for guest to enjoy. The owners were nice for the most part which also adds to the experience. The condo was incredibly decorated and they offer cleaning service twice in the week - love this! It's less expensive than a hotel with incredible perks in terms of location and freedom to go with the flow on the island.

Room Tip: We picked a second floor since we have little ones to avoid being able to open sliding door and have...

Stayed at the Strand 2B for a week and loved it! The condo and grounds were beautiful and the private beach and pool was great for the kids to play without the crowds. The large balcony overlooking the ocean was a wonderful way to start and end the day. Also able to walk to Pietermaai for many restaurants and into town easily and very much enjoyed our stay. Highly recommend and will return!

Room Tip: 2B was nice as it was on the second floor so we could leave the windows open at night and hear the w...

Great apartment, however the main bedroom is significantly larger than the other two. Very good location, there are lots of good resturants nearby and it is nice walk into town. The little beach and pool were fabulous. The only complaint was the air condioner which made a lot of noise which was problematic for the light sleepers in our group. Very relaxing place to stay!

If you're planning to visit Curaçao, don't look for any other place to stay.
We've been there just a week ago, we rented a two bedroom apartment. Everything was nicely decorated, the beds are big and comfortable, the kitchen is perfectly outfitted, The view from the terrace is superb, having breakfast thera was amazing. We got a cell phone to make local calls so we didn't have to use ours.
Every person who works there is absolutely nice, friendly and helpfull.
The Strand has it's own beach and swimming pool, so if you don't want to drive to another beach, you may stay there and have a wonderful day.
The only thing that wasn't perfect was the cold water pressure in one of the bathrooms. We had to shower with very hot water. But that was just a minor inconvenience.
I definitely would go back and rent the same apartment again.

Room Tip: I would suggest to rent a room on the second, third or fourth floor. It's a bit more intimate, y...

The apartment was spacious and clean. The service was efficient and the staff (apartment manager, security, maintance, cleaners) were friendley. At one point our fridge freezer was not working and they replaced the entire fridge frezzer within 30 mins. It's a great location with a short walk into town. The accomodation is contemporary yet cosy. The property feels extremly safe with constant security. This is definitely without a doubt accomodation I would recommend to all who visit the island and i will be booking this accomodation for my next trip as it is also great value for money. Can't wait to go back
