“Can't beat the location & price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2009

This is a great hotel if you are not on the island to sit at the resort beach all day. If you rent a car and want to actually experience the island and the city center then this is the place for you. Ask for one of the rooms facing the square & canal - so you can enjoy the view of the passing ships and goings-on in the plaza. I was leery to stay here after reading the reviews on tripadvisor but would definitely stay here again.

The HoJo in Willemstadt is undergoing renovations. Maybe they'll get it right eventually, but it's pretty mediocre now. Our room had new furniture, but utterly bare walls. The bed was hard as a brick, and the sheets were ripped. The lighting was dreadful and the drain in the sink wouldn't open. On the other hand, the location is very convenient--right next door to the fabulous Museum Kura Hulanda. I'd think twice before going back.

The location is excellent, right in front of the pontoon bridge, in the middle of the town. Our room had a view on the Brion Square and the bridge, which was wonderful, even though we had seen it all before many times. The room was on the East side, which means that you are woken up by the morning sun, and you don't suffer from a room-heating sun in the afternoon. But beware! there are also rooms on the West side, with a view on the parking lot, which is depressing at best.

The room was beautiful, nice and clean, but my wife asked the staff to view the room before she accepted it, and turned down two other rooms because of the location and dirty carpet. The staff was very friendly and helpful, but then again, my wife is local from another island, speaks the language and that certainly helped. The bed was king size, clean sheets and very good, not too hard, neither to soft. Airconditioning was working very well, with an own thermostat in the room, and noise-free on low fan speed.

There were some less favorable things though. I don't like hotels which don't serve breakfast. I want to get out of my room, in the breakfast room and enjoy a breakfast buffet. This hotel doesn't offer breakfast, but they have an arrangement with a bar next to the hotel which serves breakfast. You can buy a voucher ($10) at the front desk to pay a reduced price. They serve breakfast à la carte, and although the American Breakfast is not bad, coffee is cold by the time you get your scrambled eggs as you sit on the outside terrace in the wind. For a second cup of coffee you have to pay additionally.

In our room, all mains outlets were European style, but all the applicances had US style plugs. There was one lamp and the TV which had an adpater plug. It meant we could not use reading lights in bed, and at one side of the bed there was not even a mains outlet. Fortunatly I am an experienced traveler and I carry extension cords and adapter plugs with me for my laptop, so I could help myself. Still it is not something the average tourist can solve.

There were only two ice cube machines in the hotel. One was switched off, and the other one was empty. Awful in a hot and humid country were you want to have some cold water more than once during the day.

There was no internet available, which is uncommon in 2009.

The main entrance is not thru the lobby, but thru some kind of back door. You have to use your room key to get in. The reception is in a separate appartment on the back side of the hotel. It doesn't make you feel exactly welcome, and the staff has no sight over who is entering and leaving the premises.

Worse is that at random the key cards seem to loose their validity and have to be reprogrammed. Not only you cannot get into your room, you can't even go into the building. Hopefully the reception is staffed 24/7 because you're defenitely not amused when this happens at 1 am.

Just for the location and the view I would like to stay again in this place. There are plenty of shops, supermarkets, casinos and restaurants on walking distance. Check the old Fort Plaza on the Otrabanda side with numerous restaurants most with terraces at the water side. The casino in the new Renaissance Hotel is impressive. But because of the bad operation, and many things which are wrong I prefer to stay somewhere else next time.

This hotel has a great location because if you cross the bridge you can get to punda where the stores are, There are no beaches near by, but the bus station is near and for 2$ yiu can get to them. The roooms are terrible, no hot water, smell very bad, everything is old and fungy, a lot of filtration on the walls. The good thing is that the view is pretty you see the vessels passing by. THE PERSONNEL TREATED US TERRIBLE AND THEY DON'T SOLVE THE PROBLEMS AND THEY DON´T CARE ABOUT ALMOST ANYTHING, No casino, no restaurant you have to go out of the hotel to buy whatever, IT IS EXPENSIVE BUT IS ONLY AN OPTION IF YOU DON´T FIND ANYTHING ELSE. I recomend the Otrabanda Hotel which is aside, but it is always full. DON´T BE AFRAID OF CHANGING TO ANOTHER HOTEL IF YOU FIND SOMETHING ELSE ONCE YOU GET TO CURACAO. GOOD LUCK PEOPLE AT CURACAO ARE in general NOT FRIENDLY.

Rooms are very small and beds are not queen size as website states. Mattresses should have been replaced years ago. The pool was closed and green most of the stay. Elevator was not working the last few days of the stay. Key cards had to be re-programmed about every two days(quite an inconvenience). It is however conveniently located.

Misleading website-
No Casino, Bar or Restuarant. Staff informed us hotel under rennovation. Rooms old, stuffy, A/C worked poorly and very noisy. Not worth the amount paid to stay.
