“Just Okay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2006

I've stayed at lots of Marriotts--I had my wedding reception at a Marriott and wound up with a ton of Marriott reward points so I started looking into Marriott locations in the Caribbean for our honeymoon, which is how I found this hotel. We split our time between this hotel and the Hotel Kura Hulanda (much preferred the Kura Hulanda--I did a review of that hotel on July 21st)

The Pros:
The people are very nice although not as refined as some other hotels.
The hotel is right on the beach.
The lobby is very nice--and the view from the lobby out over the pool and ocean is beautiful. Just like it looks in the pictures.
There are straw huts on the beach with bar service. A nice option so you can have some shade.
Breakfast in the mornings was good--option to do a buffett or order individual entrees.
The Emerald Lounge is a great place for a few drinks, and seems to be recently renovated.
There's a Hertz car rental place in the lobby.

The Cons:
The rooms are dated--the hotel is older and was probably taken over by Marriott in recent years. It seems they've renovated some areas but not others. We had an oceanfront room on the second floor. The bathroom fixtures looked straight out of 1970. The patio furniture on our balcony was broken. The room was clean, just dated. The bedding looked newer, however.
The beach is narrow in front of the majority of the hotel and is next to a public beach.
The beach bar needs to be updated (which I believe they plan on doing soon). The restaurant where breakfast is served almost needs to be updated as well. Again, it looks like an older hotel in some areas.

We did the all-inclusive plan for food and drinks which was a mistake. We've been to other all inclusive hotels (where the only choice was to do an all inclusive plan) that have more restaurants, so we were kind of spoiled about that. More restaurants, the better when doing an all inclusive. By day 5 we were pretty sick of the food options. All the restaurants on-site were good, but not great. Also, because this was an all-inclusive plan (as opposed to the whole hotel being all inclusive) some of the waitstaff was not sure what was included and what was not--there are some restrictions (for instance, lobster entrees were not supposed to be included; I think some top shelf liquor was not supposed to be included), but if you asked the employees they rarely knew what was included and what was not. Also, because the waitstaff doesn't know which guests are on the all-inclusive plan and which are not, you get the strange feeling like you're stiffing them on the tip. As part of the all-inclusive plan, we already paid their tips, but they didn't necessarily know that, so we felt funny about not leaving one. So we kind of wound up tipping everyone twice.

Lastly, it's almost all Americans staying at this hotel, not surprisingly. At some of the other hotels, there's a bit more diverisity and culture.

I do highly recommend renting a car and driving around the island. There are so many great beaches--Porto Marie, Westpunt and Knip to name a few. Go to Hook's Hut, which is pretty close to the Marriott--good for drinks, food and watching the sunset.

This is a fabulous resort! I can honestly say that this is one resort that looks exactly like it does on the internet. The rooms are very nice, and exceptionally clean, the cleaning staff does a great job. The service at the resort was wonderful, and everyone is eager to help you. The food is also great. I would highly recommend doing the all inclusive plan. We did and it made things a lot easier, and I can see how if you didn't do it, your costs would add up quick! The food and drinks were wonderful. Other people have written reviews that the Portofino restaurant at the resort wasn't that great, they were wrong! I have traveled to Portofino, Italy, and I will say that the level of service, quality and presentation of food at Portofino's at the Marriott was as close as you can get. I would especially recommend the Sunday Brunch as well as the Filet Mignon- fabulous! Seabreeze beach bar is a good time, and has great food for lunch. My ONLY two comments about this resort would be that you have to be aware that there are children there and there are quite a few of them. Secondly, the dinner options are limited, but you'll do okay if you are there for 5-7 days as we were. If your going on a honeymoon I would recommend staying here for 6-7 days and then going to the Kura Hulanda in Willemstad for a few days, that is what we did and it was GREAT!! I would also recommend renting a car, and driving the island- go to the Hato Caves, Boca Tabla. Also if you stay here, walk around the corner to Hook's Hut, its really cool! Overall I would recommend this place highly!!!

We had a wonderful time in this lovely hotel. Food, great, people, very friendly. Huts were available on the beach until @ 900 am or so. We would (and will) return.

Before you make judgements about the Curacao Marriott you must remember you're in the Caribbean. This said, you can't go wrong at this fine hotel. Let me break it down by category We returned last night after a week.

1. The hotel is located beautifully. Has a lovely open lobby.
2. Check in is very efficent. No lines. They are ready with nothing for you to do but. sign.
3. The rooms are clean and the beds extremely comfortable. A full line-up of TV channels including CNN, HBO etc. The shower pressure was non existant and the bathroom door had no hook but the room was well-lit.
4. The food was good for the Caribbean. The Palm Court was fine for breakfast. Lunch was available both in and out of the pool at the Sea Breeze and on the beach at the Board Room. There is beach chair service for the inevitable pina-colada. (I never have one at home). The Portifino is their top restaurant and is a beautiful room. The food from the menu was very good but we thought the Italian buffet was lacking. The buffet is 2 nights but ala carte is also available. Don't miss the cheese cake! We ate next door at Hooks Hut on the beach and it was fine. We also went to the barbeque on the beach it it was very good for $25 per person. That's on Sat. night. There are two other beach barbeques and some other dinner options. All in all the food was ok. We ate in town one night at the Governor. Also pretty good. The cab is 10 bucks each way.
5. The casino is small but very friendly. They have all the usual games. Penny, nickel, quarter and dollar slots, black jack, craps, roulette and that worst of all games-Caribbean Stud.
The casino was quite active every night..
5. There is no meaningful entertainment. The Emerald Lounge has a nightly combo and there is music late in the Casino.
There are lots of activities planned for the kids. We had lots of well behaved youngsters around.
6. The crowd is mixed and delightfully so. Many Dutch. Most speak English. Quite a few Americans and others from South America.
7. Contrary to an earlier review we found the staff and service to be outstanding . Everyone was anxious to please. There was none of the occasional surliness one finds in the Caribbean when on vacation. We even had a call during our stay inquiring whether we were enjoying ourselves.
8. We took a bus tour of the island and it was on a slightly off weather day ,so it was worthwhile. You really don't need a car unless you plan to eat in town every day.
9. The pool is very nice. The beach is calm, beautiful and rocky enough in places to warrant beach shoes which are also supplied with towels if you request. The beach chairs are plentiful and there is adequate shade.

Summing up. The Marriot is one of the nicest hotel we have stay in of the many we have been to in the Caribbean. Reduce your expectations about 10% and you'll have a great time. ENJOY!

  • Liked — The staff and sevice
  • Disliked — we didn't dislike anything
  • Tips/Secrets — Don't rent a car. Take advantage of buying lunch at the Voila' Deli to save some money.

Our family of four, two teenage daughters, had a wonderful two week holiday at the Marriott in June. Nice clean hotel, comfortable rooms, very friendly staff and good food. Everything was perfect. We were on the all inclusive package which we felt was very good value for money. We were on the West side of the hotel, as requested. The beach on that side was fine, white sand with very few rocks. We had no need for water shoes. There were always chairs and huts available. The staff at The Board Room were fantastic about bringing us food and drink all day long. We went diving and snorkling with Carribean Sports and they were all great! We have been to many Carribean Islands and enjoyed Curacao the best. We look forward to returning to Curacao and will again stay at the Marriott. The best hotel on the Island from what we saw.

My husband and I spent 7 nights at the Curacao Marriott to celebrate my birthday. From the moment we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted with cool washcloths, and water. We did not have to wait in line to check in, since they had tables in the lobby ready with your keys.
After checking out our room that was resort view, we asked the front desk if they had any ocean view rooms, which they did. The staff was willing to let us view the room, before we made a decision. After seeing the room and the view from the 2nd floor, we decided to change rooms and pay the extra money, which was well worth it!
The pool is large and has many chairs, so you never have to worry about not getting a spot. We spent most of our days at the beach, which is beautiful. It is rocky, but we survived with our flip flops and no water shoes.
The Portofino Restaurant on-site is wonderful and we ate there twice during our stay. We went to Voila Delicatessen everyday to get a bagel for breakfast and a sandwich for lunch. We saved a ton of money doing this, instead of eating at the Palm Cafe.
We went to Fort Nassau for my birthday dinner. I would highly recommend this hotel for the view alone--it is break taking. The food and service was good, but not spectacular.
I think the best restaurant we went too was Bistro Le Clochard. It is very pricey, but the food is wonderful. I had a filet mignon that I could cut with my fork. The service is outstanding and the ambiance is so romantic. Well worth the pricey cost of dinner!
I was lucky enough to find a great deal on Marriott's website, and we got the 7th night free and $100 food and beverage credit. For the quality of the hotel, it was a bargain! I highly recommend staying at this Marriott. We can't wait to return!

My husband and I spent 5 days at the Marriott last week. We spent 2 weeks in Curacao and stayed at the Kura Hulanda Lodge in Westpunt, the Kura Hulanda in town and finally at the Marriott. The most expensive room was at the Marriott and we were thoroughly disappointed that we splashed out on an beachfront room. For a start we were located on the ground floor so we had no privacy outside on the patio. The patio furniture is the worst I have seen at any hotel in quite some time, it was all rusty and discoloured, there was no way you would wish to sit out there. Our whole point of booking an ocean view with a patio was so we could sit outside in the evenings and enjoy the view but it is dramatically different from the advertised
"Stunning view of the ocean overlooking the beach with a private balcony or terrace. 344 sq ft."
On the plus side the staff were incredibly friendly. The pool was fine but always very busy and loud. We only ate at the beach restaurant as we like to dine outside and that was really the only option to sit by the sea. The food there was pretty average. Hook's hut just down the road was really excellent and I would thorougly recommend going there.
