My husband and I honeymooned at the Curacao Marriott from May 21 through May 30, 2006. This was our third visit to the beautiful island of Curacao and third stay at the Marriott. We can't say enough about the friendly staff, cleanliness of the public areas within the hotel and their guest rooms. The water pressure was great, and the beds and linens were wonderful! Everything in the room was well maintained! A lightbulb did burn out during our stay. We reported it in the morning, and by the time we got back from the beach that day, it had been replaced. The refrig in our room was a nice size, and kept our beverages nice and cool!
I have to laugh at those reviewers, who say the breakfast buffet gets boring after a few days. Not only is there a tremendous selection on the buffet, they also have a full menu to select from in Palm Cafe including eggs benedict (which is fantastic). For example, omelet station (choices include bacon, ham, onion, tomatoe, jalapeno, green pepper, cheese, and mushrooms). At the omelet station, you can order eggs any way you want them... over easy, sunny-side up, etc. All you need to do is ask, and the Marriott staff will bend over backwards to accommodate your request. Also, you can request an egg white omelet, or just egg whites. They have waffles (freshly made) with warm syrup, a pancake station with four choices of toppings, fresh rolls, wheat bread, white bread, english muffins, scrambled eggs, fresh fruit galore, cereal, yogurt, breakfast sausages and potatos, yummy croissants, sweet rolls, danish, freshly squeezed orange juice, coffee and tea. If there is something other than the above that you would like for breakfast, all you need to do is ask!
Portofino Restaurant: Monday nights is the buffet at Portofino Restaurant, which is an excellent value for $25.00. The buffet included a pasta station (penne, cheese tortolini and linguini with choice of pesto, alfredo or marinara sauces), tenderloin of beef, chicken marsala, mahi mahi, fresh vegetables, tossed salad or caesar salad, cheese cake, pineapple upside down cake and cookies. We also ate two other nights at Portofino. The salmon was awesome, the veal exquisite and the filet mignon melted in your mouth. They now offer an antipasta station as an appetizer, which knocked my husband's socks off! Service is excellent.
We visited our favorite restaurant, Bistro Le Clochard in Riffort (only a 10 minute cab ride from the hotel). We sat outside to capture the beautiful view of Punda and harbor all llit up at night. They make a terrific bloody mary. We savored chatteau briand with bernaise sauce (pardon my spelling). For dessert, we enjoyed airy cream puffs filled with ice cream with chocolate sauce drizzled on top. I also heard that The Wine Cellar and Astrolab were fantastic choices. We will try them next year.
Within the last two months, Marriott built a bar mid way from the hotel to the dive shop, which is open from 11am to 7pm. This was an excellent idea. They installed a grill and picnic tables which serves lunch until 4pm. The lunch menu consists of hot dogs, Marriott burgers, grilled chicken and Chirasco with fresh vegetables, served with french fries or chips. Thank you Linda for all the love you put in to making our burgers. Also, we found a sandy spot to enter and exit the water. The Marriott will be reconstructing their beach front in September. By the time we return next year, that should be completed. The coral is all over (it's the nature of the island), and you need to be careful when walking into the water. The hotel offers water shoes at no additional cost, so please take advantage of this. All you need to do is ask! The water was absolutely heavenly... warm, clear and the gentle waves seemed to rock us to sleep. I used 30 SPF, sat under the palapa, and still got tan (I didn't burn).
Seabreeze Restaurant offers a great lunch and dinner menu. They also offer a nightly buffet with different themes. Elvis is a great bartender, and makes a whopping Mudslide and Pina Colada! We did not eat in the Emerald Lounge.
The hotel offers complimentary shuttle service in the morning and afternoon to go into Punda to shop. You must make a reservation on the day you intend to go. Visit the concierge by 7am or you can call, and make your reservation. The shuttle leaves at 9am and returns at 12 noon. One note: there were 8 passengers on this shuttle, and not one person tipped the driver.... not even $1.00 (we tipped him $2.00). However, I noticed that all the other passengers had lots of shopping bags full of stuff. If you had to take a cab into Punda, it would cost you $20.00 round trip, so we believed a $2.00 tip was a very small price to pay for door to door service.
We did not go on any excursions this time. We relaxed at the beach! The Marriott offers a wide selection of excursions. The concierge was extremely helpful with dinner reservations and answered all our questions. The concierge is there to help and assist you, keeping your safety in mind first and foremost. If you want to go some place that is not offered as an excursion, all you have to do is ASK! We stopped by the Hilton to pick up other people on our way to the airport, and that hotel looked dated. I was not inside, so I cannot say how the inside was. Just looking at the grounds and the outside, I don't believe I would want to stay there (I'm comparing this to the Marriott).
The casino is small. We didn't come to Curacao to gamble. If we wanted to gamble, we would have gone to Las Vegas. We would go to the casino after dinner and stay for one hour. They had a live band which was nice. Then we would go back to our room, sit on our patio and enjoy the quiet with a glass of Bailey's. We came here to relax, and relax is exactly what we did.
I would like to say something about tipping. 12% service charge is automatically added onto your bill; therefore, guests believe they are not obligated to tip. We tipped. We tipped the bartenders, we tipped the wait staff, we tipped housekeeping. We didn't tip an additional 20%, but we did tip any where from $2.00 to $5.00. We left housekeeping $2.00 daily. We had extra towels, extra coffee, bottled waters, cream put in our refrigerator, and always received a beautiful hand-wrtten thank you note. It is our understanding that the 12% service charge is distributed amongst the staff once/year. We wouldn't like to get paid a whole year after completing a job, so we tipped as we went along. One thing was amazing to me: I witnessed people lose hundreds of dollars in the casino, but refused to leave their waiter a $2.00 tip. Perhaps that's why they lost their money in the casino?
The pool is gorgeous. Is it small? Nope! It's not a lap pool, but it certainly isn't small. And, if you are one of those people, who like to go down early in the morning and put a towel on your chair to reserve it: don't do it. The Marriott does not condone such behavior. They have a sign posted, and as a guest of the hotel, remember that is all that you are. That lounge "chair" does not belong to you. So, if you want to "try" to reserve a "favorite" chair by running down to the pool at 7am and putting your towel on it, don't be surprised to see your towel(s) gone or relocated when you do finally return to your chair at 11am. There are plenty of chairs and palapas to go around. If not, just ask to share a palapa with someone else. Six chairs can easily fit under one with enough shade to go around for everyone.
I hope this review helped. We will be returning next year in May. That was an excellent time of year to go (we previously went in December and January). A vacation is all what you make it to be. Relax, and get to know the freindly people, culture and history of this beautiful island. Many thanks to Elvis, Marty, Arthur, Linda and Juan. Your thoughtfulness and hospitality was tremendous!
