A group of about 25 of us stayed here for my cousin’s wedding. We had the BEST time! But it was not because of anything the hotel or staff did. We’re just a really fun group of people - you could put us on Antarctica and we’d still have fun!
I’ll start off by telling you the best thing about the Marriott here: the grounds and the property. They’re not the best but the fake beach and the snorkeling adjacent to the beach is really good: lots of fish. You can also scuba dive right off of the beach too.
OK, now let me tell you that you should avoid this property at all costs. It’s expensive and you don’t get anything for free unless you do an all-inclusive. They nickel and dime you for EVERYTHING! They even charged me $26 for a dive computer battery (what choice did I have?). There is no free internet on the property – not even in the lobby (internet is $16, a day…A DAY!).
If you really want to try out Curacao, the Lion’s Dive and Beach Resort is a much better choice.
Other shortcomings of the Marriott:
-The slowest, worst service I’ve ever experienced at any hotel anywhere in the world. It was simply as if the staff did not care – a total lack of “hussle.” We went to Voila, their little snack and sandwich shop, every morning for a cop of coffee and breakfast sandwich and not once did they ever have them ready to eat. Their excuse was always that, “They were making them downstairs and would bring them up.” Everyone got together for our last meal at Portofino, their main restaurant, and it took almost 3 hours to eat. They could not even handle keeping bread and butter on the table and took 20 minutes for them to uncork a bottle of wine we brought (with cork fee, of course!). Drinks took a long time to make at each bar and if you ordered a burger and fries at the outside bar, you really needed to order it the night before.
-There is a $20 “resort fee” that everyone has to pay even though we were not notified of it when we made the reservation. So, it’s basically just a way they can lie about a lower room rate and then tack on another $20 you don’t know about at check out.
-The pool ran out of clean towels while we were there 3 times, not once but 3 times!
-A few days before we arrived, we noticed that Marriott was offering a package that was not offered to us when we made the reservation: travel dates of May 1 - July 1, 2009 and August 15 - December 15, 2009 and receive up to $200 per person air credit, $200 dining credit per guest room and the fifth night free when booking five consecutive nights. We figured no big deal, we’ll just ask for that rate code (P50) and package after we check in. Of course, Jaime (a front desk manager) would not give it to us saying that is was not available when we booked originally. I told him that cancelling and re-booking would have gotten us that package and he really did not know what to say. All they have to do is flip the rate code in the computer - they just did not want to.
-The Jacuzzi did not work the entire time we were there.
-The hotel screwed up the reservation for our group’s sunset cruise. We get everyone there, no boat. To their credit, they did make this one right by getting the boat there and loading it with beer, wine and snacks.
- Housekeeping missed a day and we had to call them 4 times to get some fresh towels. Another group found a pair of pajamas under their bed pillow after they checked in and discovered that another party had checked in to the room earlier in the day, decided they didn’t like it and changed rooms. All ok, except for the fact the front desk lied about it and said there had not been anyone in that room all day. They only fessed up because the earlier guest asked for the pjs.
-After the wedding reception, my girlfriend left her camera on one of the tables and when she went back to get it 20 minutes later the staff denied seeing it. She told them that they could keep her camera – she just wanted the memory card with the wedding pictures on it. Of course, the dishonest staff did not turn in either the camera or the card.
- Taxis were at least $20 to any site worth seeing on the island and $25 to the airport.
-It is just a bad location. There is simply nothing to see within walking distance if you dare to leave the resort.
This hotel costs what hotels cost in Hawaii. BUT Hawaii is worth it. This place isn’t.
