“a mismanaged hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2014

Avoid this hotel. Overcharging of already too high prices, changing prices for the same items depending on the day you buy, items on the menu which are not available, long waiting times at any restaurant for anthing, extremely long waiting times at New Year buffet (up till 45 mins, finally we gave up and had no main course), obviously occupied table not being served by any waiter (while 6 waiters stand in the bar area), sudden restaurant closures without any explanations, all this seems to be normal at this hotel. Being a platinum Elite Marriott member, this is by far the worst Marriott I have ever been at.

Pros: Great staff, specially Kurt Jackson, the front desk manager. He made our little inconvenience checking in go away very fast. Thanks Kurt. Cons: getting in the ocean is difficult as its full of rocks and corals. also, you need to wake up very early to get a good spot at the beack or pool.

Dear msavdie~

Thank you for staying with us, we appreciate your positive comments about our staff.
Happy to hear you enjoyed our white sandy beach which because of the natural coral reef that it has we do our best effort to keep as natural as possible so people can continue enjoying the thousands of colorful fishes that gather around it.

Thank you, hope to see you soon

Best regards

We spent three nights at this hotel and in general were happy there. Our check in went smoothly and we were pointed in the direction of our room. It was in a quiet location and was spacious, clean and comfortable. There was a safe in the room. Everything was in good working order. We opted to turn off the air conditioning and open the balcony door for some air instead. This was great on our first night. The next day, a smoker must have moved into the room under us. Unfortunately we had to leave the door to the balcony closed. When I opened it to put our wet bathing suits outside to dry, the cigarette smoke came into our room. We're glad that all rooms in this hotel are nonsmoking. Unforunately, there's nothing preventing a smoker from smoking on their balcony!
On the subject of cigarette smoke, we ran into it constantly on the hotel property. People were smoking around the pool, in the outdoor restaurant and in the restaurant in the lobby. This took away from our enjoyment of a few of our meals. The food in the restaurants was good. It is standard "American" fare, in general. Be aware of the taxes and service charges that apply to your hotel stay as well as to any restaurant meals you order there; you'll pay over 20% for these combined before paying any gratuity.
The hotel's swimming beach has coral pieces in the shallow part of the water, so wearing water shoes to get in and out of the water is recommended. Alternatively, if you walk about 80 meters or so over to the Hilton Hotel's beach, it is completely sandy and very easy and painless to get in and out of the water.
The hotel operates 2 daily shuttles to Willemstad, one in the morning, leaving at 9am and picking you up for the return to the hotel at noon, and one in the afternoon, leaving for Willemstad around 2pm.

Dear Bee B ~
Thank you for your great comments about the resort sorry to hear that some guests that smoked during your stay make your stay less pleasant.

We are a non-smoking property and we don't allow smoking in areas that are closed but we try also to be considered to those that enjoy smoking and we allow doing it in public spaces.

Hope this does not stop you to come back soon to enjoy our beautiful beaches and our hospitality with a touch of European flavor.

Thank you

We spent 3 nights here with my wife. Overall, resort is well maintained and we had a spacious, clean room, even outdated. 15% service fee on top of everything seemed bizarre. I don't mind paying tips but is this a tip or what? There is a separate 'graduity' line in bill...
outdated luxury resort with luxury prices.

Dear Jani K,
Thank you for taking the time to complete a TripAdvisor Survey. I am very sorry to hear that we did nto live up to your expectations. The 15 % Service Charge is a gratuity that is distributed amongst the associates. The tip line automatically reflects on the slip yet is completely at your discretion should you wish to leave a tip over and above. Should you have any additional concerns please do not hesitate to contact me at louella.brezovar@marriott.com. I do hope to be able to welcome you back to our resort in the future.
Best Wishes for the New Year,

the marriott has great service! my wife and I just got back from our honey moon there and the resort is so awesome! (keep in mind we did pay our hotel with points so im not sure on rooms prices vs experience but never the less it was great!) the food on site was somewhat expensive (they add 15% service and (% tax to your bill then expect another tip. not sure if the 15% goes to waitors or not but i tipped an additional 12-15% after each bill because of the service. the hotel has 3 or 4 restaurants. emerald lounge was the best. portifino (spelling) was the most expensive so we never ate there, the bay side by the pool was where we had lunch alot, and we ate breakfast most of the time from the cafe (it was great). we also had room service a few times and it was pretty good!
there is a bbq beach dinner on mondays, GO!
dont forget to look at your free gifts in booklet when you arrive.
there is also a restaurant at the top of the hill about a 100 yd walk from the marriot and it was great indonesian food!
the snorkeling on site was fabulous! the beach and pool were great!
we went during the rainy season so it rained a couple times a day for 15 minutes or so but wasnt bad at all.

bring cash for taxis! they dont run off of a meter/ its distance based.

Room Tip: we had a beach front upper floor! the best by far of all the rooms!

Spent 10 days at the Marriott. The people of Curacao are the nicest people we've met anywhere in the Caribbean. The hotel is very nice, as others have said the rooms could use some updating. We were in room 333 garden view which overlooked the hottub, but we also could view the beach & ocean from our balcony. After a long day of travel from California we were woke up between 200-400 am from people getting rowdy in the hot tub. After calling front desk and complaining we received a $100 room credit & a wine and cheese platter, which was nice.
Staff-was amazing, bartenders at then Emerald and swim up bar so friendly and accomadating
Food- we ate offsite, so can't really comment
Pool- not huge, like Aruba but very nice
Beach-Always great to have the beach steps away, a little rocky but not as bad as people say, you don't really need water shoes
Rent a car and explore the beaches on the west end, really nice and quiet. Most restaraunts are downtown about a 10-15 min. drive. you could taxi it but that adds $40 roundtrip to your dinner bill.
We also bought beer and a bbq at the grocery store and bbq 3 nights on the beach next door.

Enjoy.

The premises and beach are nice here! The service and automatically added service fee are not.

Our experience started from the reception when the price of the hotel room rose from 800 dollars (that was on booking.com when booked) to 1400 dollars as they added taxes 9% and service fee 15% on the bill. Service fee from room rate??? The 15% extra is added on every bill and there's also a line for gratuity.. Doesn't seem a fair deal to me.

The service was quite bad especially in Emerald Lounge. We ate there 3 times and every time i had to hunt for ashtray from waitress spot inside as they forgot my wish faithfully every time. Same with some drinks. On New Years eve, we sat there for 2,5 hrs for salads and dessert because lack of service (there was around 10 people in the whole restaurant so that's not an excuse). Food was basic but good enough. Some of the staff were nice and helpful, majority didn't have the service attitude and skills needed for high-end place.

On New Year's Marriott had poor fireworks - only three units. Hilton next to us had absolutely fantastic instead. Fortunately it was easy to follow both from the beach.

Room was big and overlooked the garden and hot tub. Decor was outdated but overall the room was ok. The main building looks beautiful, so does the beach. Pool area was full of empty sunbeds - reserved with towels.

Marriott Curacao doesn't meet its standard. I feel somewhat robbed - they take money out of everything they can (and cannot) but the service is bad and decor from 70s. I'd pay with pleasure - excluding the service fee from the room rate - IF the service was extraordinary good and the premises were luxury. So, luxury prices without luxury treatment. My recommendation - go somewhere else.
