“Great Beach and Good Home Base for touring the island”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013

As a seasoned Marriott guest, we were attracted to the size, layout, amenities, beach and location of this Marriott resort.

Overall, this resort is in the upper 1/3 of Marriott resorts, with the beachfront, large pool, multiple restaurants, dive shop and proximity to the city.

The rooms are a little dated (~10 years old) and the resort could use a little paint (the sea and the sun put a toll on it), however, none of that took away from us thoroughly enjoying our 5 nights here.

Definitely would recommend this and return to it on a future trip.

Room Tip: It's a three story resort, with garden (1st floor) level with the benefit of easy access to the...

This hotel was excellent in almost all regards. Its main clientele seem to be from the USA so things are tailored around these guests. Our room seemed to be a let down on first impression, but as we got into our stay it was actually quite good.

Service and food were very good, but you were constantly asked if service was ok which really meant give me a tip! Some of he staff really went out of their way to help which was very much appreciated.

The beach was wonderful as was the big pool, lots of things for our kids to do. We ate out in the evenings at local restaurants a ten minute walk away. Very good cuisine and reasonably priced too.

All in all the second best hotel on the island, but better located than the best so i can easily recommend. Curacao is a real gem of a place, the best thing i experienced the whole trip was hearing only one other (UK) English speaker on my holidays, and no cheap deals there too meaning not tattooed, hooped earring wearing oiks anywhere on the island....paradise found!

This was our 2nd stay at the Curacao Marriott and we weren't disappointed. We were initially planning on going to a different island, but we remembered our great experience there in 2007 that we decided to go back again. The hotel property is really beautiful and they keep the grounds immaculate. The room we stayed in was definitely in need of renovation and in need of more/better lighting and our "resort view" basically looked out on parking lot. That said, we got what we paid for. We weren't planning to hang out in our room alot and we didn't. The beds were more comfortable this time around, I am happy to say.

What makes this resort stand out is the staff. I would like to give a shout out to the wonderful people we encountered, but I am afraid I would leave someone out. Believe me, just about everyone was terrific; friendly and went out of their way to be helpful. Everyone made you feel welcome right to the very end.

A few nit-picky items:
-The cleaning staff start awfully early (I mentioned this last time around, too); we would often hear their carts before 8 am. I'm on vacation and want to sleep in. :(
-Our flight wasn't leaving until 4:30 pm, so we wanted to hang out there until about 2:30. We were leaving on a Monday, so I can't imagine they had a whole bunch of people checking in that day. We asked for a late check-out; they allowed us to stay until noon, but said they'd have to charge us $25/hour after that. Really? We checked out at noon; grabbed a quick bite at the pool bar (in the heat!) and then went to the airport 3 hours early. They could have made more money on us if they'd just let us stay a couple of extra hours; we very much enjoyed the services at the pool bar while we were there! ;-)

Some suggestions regarding dining: While the hotel's restaurants had very good food, we knew we'd get bored if we ate there every meal. We walked over to the Hilton (food & service were pretty good; property itself is pretty awful compared to the Mariott), as well as Pirate's Bay (good food; horrible service...not one smile!) for lunch. And, we also walked to Sjalotte's (good food, pricey; service so-so) and Tempoe Doeloe (Indonesian, delicious and a great value; nice service) for dinner. On our 2nd to last day, we found out that El Gaucho Steakhouse will pick you up from the hotel for dinner. Food and service were great, as is the view. It's quite a hike from the hotel (15-20 minute drive), so their free shuttle is a real deal. Definitely worth a visit!

Room Tip: I would avoid the resort view rooms on the first floor. Very dark and in need of renovations.

We just got back from a week at the Marriott Curacao and we thoroughly enjoyed it! From the check in desk, maid service, to the pool bar and restaurants, everyone was so nice and friendly!
We had a beachfront room and never heard our neighbors! Our room was very comfortable and cool and clean everyday. It is a family resort so it took getting used to having kids around the swim bar and splashing in the pool. We rented a car for two days which was nice to be able to leave when the beach seemed crowded and go to another beach where the locals go. We would highly recommend the Marriott in Curacao!

Room Tip: beachfront second floor near the main pool was close to everything and not noisy!

We just returned from a week here and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. Would we return? Doubtful, but we do like trying new places. The Marriot is an older hotel and while looking at other reviews I can see that we were definitely staying in the older rooms that needed updating! The entire room, along with the furniture was badly in need of paint or better yet replacement. That being said, we rarely expect U.S. standards when traveling in the Carribean.
Pros: Friendly and cheerful staff, always willing to help. Very clean public areas and an abundance of chairs on the beach. Dive shop staff were great. Live music near the Emerald Lounge every evening. Lots of families, so quiet and low key if this is what you are looking for.
Cons: Very expensive food and drinks on the resort with an additional service charge of 15%, so don't over tip! Beach is very rocky the first few steps in so bring some water shoes. It does become sandy after this and the snorkeling along the rocks is great so well worth the effort.
Towels were always a problem..,some days in our room we got 1 washcloth, no handtowels and just a couple of bath towels for 3 of us. It took daily phone calls to the service desk and only 1 of the days did we receive adequate amounts. Beach towels were plentiful except for the day they had none! Shuttle to Willemstadtt only had 11 seats and ran twice a day, we were never able to get seats on it even when we called first thing in the morning. Make sure to plan for a rental car or taxi money to eat off the resort. Food was okay, but choices were very limited and there was never anything new on any menus.

Dear Delynde,
Thank you for your candid feedback on your review. I appreciate the comments about our staff. They are indeed our strongest asset.
It is true that our shuttle only seats 12 persons. We only have permission from the Governement to run a small shuttle to town and only twice a day. This is to give the local taxis an opportunity to do transfers as well. We have resolved the temporary shortfall of linen and are reviewing and addressing your concerns. Your feedback ensures that we keep making improvements in order to continue earning your business. Thank you again for taking the time to write your review.
SIncerely, Louella Brezovar

I just spent the past week at the Curacao Marriott with my wife and two teenage kids and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. The facility is nicely designed and appointed, well run and staffed by helpful employees. The rooms look like they’ve been updated within the past five years and still have some life in them. And there are enough lounge chairs so that you don’t have to set an alarm and leave a shoe on one at 4am. Most impressively, they’ve figured out a way to make sure they don’t run out of towels. When you check in, you’re given a towel card (like a room key). You exchange the card for two towels in the morning and get a new card back when you return them each afternoon. If you’re missing a towel card at checkout, the hotel charges $ 25.

Wait a minute…have we reached a point in the hospitality business where a hotel that offers clean rooms, enough towels and beach chairs is impressive? Sadly, yes.

Nevertheless…

The pool bar serves up great drinks and snacks with a smile (everyone on Curacao seems to have at least one gold tooth). The swim-up counter is a nice touch as well.

The beach is beautiful and there’s decent snorkeling less than 50 yards off shore. Don’t forget to pack water shoes...most of Curacao’s beaches have a lot of coral rubble in the surf. Ouch. The on-site dive shop is well-stocked and the staff is welcoming.

The restaurants serve up tasty dishes and the usual breakfast buffet. Gichi the waitress took great care of us. Ask to be seated at one of her tables.

Housekeeping was spectacular. Our room was always immaculate by the time we got back each day.

The Marriott is conveniently located near the center of the island’s southern shore and about 15 minutes from town. Definitely rent a car and explore.

Here are the three areas where the property gets lower marks.

1) The hotel imposes a $ 42.00 per day “service charge”, which they don’t disclose until checkout. I was told this money is pooled and distributed as tips to the staff. Now, I believe hospitality workers deserve WAY more than they’re paid and always tip generously. But I like to tip for good service…not across the board. Also, it would’ve been great to know about this policy at check-in, so I didn’t have to carry money…or double tip people. I’m generally skeptical that 100% of these funds ever even make it to the employees anyway. Does the hotel allow them to audit the books?

2) The smell. One thing the Curacao board of tourism doesn’t promote is the HUGE oil refinery on the island. And I mean HUGE. Take a look at Google maps. When the wind blows in the right direction it smells as if the roof was just tarred. Then again, if you’re from New Jersey, you may feel right at home ;). (Relax…my wife is a Jersey Girl) I know the hotel can’t control this, but caveat emptor.

3) Common area wear and tear. Some of the stairwells and walkways are in need of maintenance/painting/freshening. Especially the hand rails, which are white and look dirty.

Would I return? Yes, absolutely. The hotel is a good value and a comfortable place to stay.

If you found my review helpful, please give it a vote. It’s nice to know my adventures serve the common good. Besides, I like those emails from Trip Advisor ;). And, of course, feel free to PM me with specific questions.

Room Tip: Oceanfront rooms are much better, as the back of the hotel faces a bland, industrial building. Also...

Very nice hotel with great pool and nice beach. The staff was very helpful and accommodating. We would definitely stay there again. Room service and hotel restaurants were good. Hotel is a little far away from town so plan your trips carefully. Taxis are very expensive.
Some of the guests reserve lounge chairs early (by placing towels on them) and then not using them till 1 or 2 pm! Wish pool staff would discourage this practice .

Room Tip: Need to get a room with a beach view!
