“Curacao Marriot Resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013

Wonderful location, wonderful lagoon and snorkeling right in front of hotel. Scenic, very clean and the staff was very friendly. Casino is very small but has a few games and is open late. Food was very good at the resort. There is a local's beach next door that, during New Years, was a bit on the noisy side with fireworks (3am) every night for a week. I was impressed that the resort looks just like the pictures. Easy to rent a car right from the resort desk.

Room Tip: East side is next to noisy public beach.

I stayed here for a week and had the best stay ever at a hotel. The property is beautiful and the service is great. Cassandra who checked me in was fabulous, friendly and very informative. I love the location of the hotel because of its private beach, it is close to Willemstad and the airport. I ate at all of the restaurants but the Seabreeze was my favourite because of the option to eat outside and view the ocean and also because of the great service from Tssana. The rooms are great and are well maintained. Thank you Carolyn! I had the best massage on the beach. Overall everyone working at the hotel worked hard to make sure that the guests enjoy their stay at the Marriott. I would definitely stay at the Curacao Marriott again if I am in Curacao.

Room Tip: As for a beachfront room. This gives you a better view of the ocean.

This review is all you need to know about The Curacao Marriott Beach Resort & Emerald Casino. My wife and I are 29 & 31, and we stayed here for 7 days over Christmas week. Our overall impression of this place was fantastic. Here's the breakdown:

Room: This was the only part of the Marriott that wasn't 5-star. The rooms seem to be about 15 years out-of-date for what the 'per night' rate is. There are no stylish modern fixtures or cool swank wood/granite detail. The room, aesthetically, is on par with an old Holiday Inn. Having said that, the rooms were VERY clean, did NOT smell like smoke or mold, and the bed was very comfortable. We also had a flatscreen TV (about 40'') and a refrigerator (which was KEY for keeping waterbottles cold and saving expensive left-overs), so its not like the room was from the early 90's or anything. We did NOT mind the room, but if you're looking for something that is ultra-luxury, this is far from it. For my wife and I, we didn't spend much time in the room, so it was fine. The room location mattered more for us, and we were 20 feet from the beach, with ocean views, so we did not complain. The room was nice.

Food: Portofino is the fancy place, Emerald Lounge is more or less a Pub, and Seabreeze is the bar/restaurant on the beach/at the pool. There are a few other eateries/drinkbars that are on the property, but they were closed most of the time. It could have been because it was a holiday week. They looked cool, but we didn't miss them. Portofino has pretty good Itailan-themed food and great service. That's also where the breakfast buffet is for $16 (cold) and $23 (hot) every morning. Emerald Lounge's menu is a step-above bar food. Hot sandwiches, pizzas, but also crab cakes and other interesting smaller dishes. The food there was great. Emerald Lounge has live music almost every night and our favorite thing on the menu was a dessert called Ms. Foster, which was a huge serving of delicious banana fosters with nuts and caramel and raspberries. That was probably the most sinful meal of the whole trip. Seabreeze is probably the place you'll eat most, as the menu is diverse. Highlights from Seabreeze were delicious coconut shrimp, jerk chicken quesadillas, a fresh sushi bar, great service from the bartenders. The dinner menu has nice selections of fish and one steak option. Seabreeze is outdoors, so if you eat there at night, especially at there raised dining area 20 feet from the ocean, USE MOSQUITO REPELLANT. We brought some from the states and kept saying how it was the best decision we made. The mosquitos will even nip at you while you're in the open-air lobby. All eating options at the Marriott were very good.

Property: The Curacao Marriott's property earns 6 out of 5 stars. Yes, one extra star. It blew us away. The first thing you see when you pull up to the hotel is a huge open-air lobby overlooking palm trees and the electric blue caribbean sea. Unlike the rooms, the lobby makes you feel like you're at a 5-star resort. The beach had some of the best snorkeling on the entire island. Every beach in curacao has great snorkeling, but you don't expect it in a built-up resort area. There are tons of tropical fish, little fiddler crabs on the beach (they are cute and afraid of people), and an area in the water with about 100 large mushroom-shaped coral that attract all sorts of sea life. It's a HUGE beach - we never felt crammed. There are plenty of lounge chairs. Waiters serve you drinks on the beach also. There is a dive shop on the far west part of the property that is affiliated with the Marriott, so you can charge stuff to your room. They also do diving excursions. One IMPORTANT note about the beach: You MUST wear water shoes or fins. There is a lot of coral and sea shells and a few sea urchins that wouldn't be pleasant to step on bare-footed. The hotel posted some signs with this info, and they do offer free water shoes. But we got a pair each from Modell's for $10 before the trip, just to make sure we had ones that fit correctly. If you have snokeling/diving fins, that's great, but if you just want to go for a swim, it might be annoying to be wearing fins, so watershoes are a plus.

Staff: Unbelievably awesome. They do not rest until you are pleased. Our luggage was lost the first night and they didn't have any contact solution at the hotel, so a guy at the front desk named Mark had someone go out and get contact solution in the middle of the night. No charge. They are always smiling and NOT lazy at all. When our luggage arrive the next morning, they sent someone out to roam the beach to find us and tell us it was there. One night our dinner reservations at some fancy pants restaurant got cancelled for a BS reason, and the front desk felt so bad that they set up a table for us at Seabreeze (the best table in the house) and put an orchid and candle on the table to make it look fancy pants. That was awesome and much appreciated. Also, it was Xmas week, so the hotel had no rental cars left. The front desk called all over the place and finally found some independent rental car guy who had one car left. The staff and service, blew us away, so they also deserve 6 out of 5 stars!

Pool: We did not go in the pool at all, but it looked lovely. You can swim-up to the Seabreeze bar from the pool, so that looked nice. There are also 2 sizeable hot tubs on the property and they were really nice. We spent all day on the beach because the sea water was amazing. You can go in a pool anywhere in the world, but you only get Caribbean water in the Caribbean. There were lots of kids at the resort which is a turn-off for snooty people, but it didn't bother us.

Overall: Our other options for hotels were the Hyatt (now called 'Santa Cruz' or something) and the Kura Hulanda. We saw the Kura Hulanda when we visited Playa Kalki. That place looked awesome and wouldn't be a bad choice to stay. There were less kids there and it was less "commercial resorty" and more "little boutique hotel" tucked away in trees and cliffs. We would have loved to stay at Kura Hulanda, but the location is just about the western-most part of the island, about 50 minutes from Willemstad. It's pretty remote, but lots of natural beauty. TONs of iguanas on that property as opposed to about 1 or 2 iguanas on the Marriott's. The Hyatt seemed like the "Ultra Luxury" option and has a golf course, but the beach was facing a waterway that is used by a lot of boats. It didn't seem like there was much room to snorkel, but I could be wrong as I didn't see what was under the water. the beach at the Marriott seemed like more fun.

We were VERY happy that we chose Curacao Marriott. If we go again, we may try Kura Hulanda, but would be cautious to roam around that end of the island by ourselves because it's so remote and there is a theft problem. With the Marriott, you are 13 minutes from the airport, 10 minutes from Willemsted, 45 minutes from all the west coast beaches, and you're in good hands with the staff. Overall a great stay and would highly recommend the Marriott to families, couples, or even old farts.

The staff and hotel was outstanding! There were many weddings held there during our stay but they made the guest feel like they were there for you ! The only negatives I have were the casino was small! There were no drink service on the beach, and there were very few restaurants choices on the property !

My husband stayed at this resort during the New Year. The pool and beach were buzzing the first few days we were there. We were stunned by how early people get up and out their towels out to reserve their chairs for the day. The downfall to this, however, was that the chairs would remain with towels on them for 4 and 5 hours before anyone ever came to sit in them. I would love for the hotel to manage this problem a little better because it was an inconvenience for my husband and I and several guests. Once I witnessed employees making a sweep through the pool area, taking towels from chairs that had not been used, but in my opinion, this needs to be done several times a day.
The pool area is super, very quiet in the mornings. If you like to work out, the gym/spa is amazing as well.
We did not eat at all of the restaurants, but found that the food where we did eat was just ok and overpriced. Most of the island adds the "service charge" to everything and here it is 15%.
One last thing...we stayed in a garden view room, but had a pretty good view of the ocean as well. The rooms were cleaned nicely everyday and turn down service was offered, however, sometimes that was at 6:30 and other times they didn't come until after 9:30. We found that the hallways were very noisy until late at night and the noise started again around 6 am with employees getting ready for the day with towel cards and room service for breakfast. To drown the sounds out, we used a sound machine app on the iPad.
All in all we enjoyed our stay and would go back for sure....just a few things we would change. :)

Room Tip: Don't go for resort view...looks on the pool and is noisy!

This is a classy property which fully avails of it's gorgeous tropical location. The lobby and common areas are high ceilinged and open to the balmy Curacao weather. They are well appointed and invite you to linger with comfortable seating that is strewn all over the lobby, hallways etc. The casino is small but well equipped and tucked away right off the lobby. 4 eating options - Voila Deli, Emerald Bar with outdoor seating, Seabreeze which is great pool side snacking and Portofino for fine dining. We enjoyed Voila and Seabreeze a few times. The fish and chips at Seabreeze was excellent. The pool is large and the beach is nice although . The rooms are well appointed. The staff is courteous, friendly and helpful. There is adequate secure and free self parking on the grounds. My only points of issue (hence the "very good" instead of "excellent") - there aren't enough umbrellas at the pool and lots of people just leave books and towels as "placeholders" first thing in the morning thus depriving other patrons of the use of umbrellas all day long. They should enforce the "you can hold a chair if you are at the pool" rule. We saw families leaving for hours on end with their belongings lying on chairs in prime locations under the umbrellas while other patrons walked around searching for spots of shade in the hot Curacao sun. The same goes for the beach - there are about a dozen or so palapas and most are taken by 9am in the morning so unless you are up early to "reserve" one for yourself, you are out of luck. I am sure our problem was exacerbated because we were there between 26th December and the 1st of Jan which is probably THE peak time in the year. There are two nice hot tubs which we used to our heart's content. Secondly, the in room air conditioning controls are outdated for a hotel of this stature. You cannot set a temperature and there is no auto feature on the thermostat so the AC is either on all the time or not.

Some friendly tips - Don't forget your water shoes (around $20-25) since most beaches are full of coral and pebbles underfoot when wading into the water and it can be very painful without the shoes. All in all, we had a fabulous stay. The Piscadera Bay area is a great location to hit the west coast beaches with a rental car or to go into Willemstad every day for dinner (just a 10 minute drive to the Renaissance parking lot). We did both several times. The airport is about 15 minutes away on a straight road. The Hilton is right next door and the Floris is across the street but we didn't visit either since there was so much to do in this gorgeous property. I have been to many Caribbean locations and this had to rank as one of the best.

Room Tip: ask for a room on the 2nd or 3rd floor (it's a three floor building all around) to avoid the noi...

We checked into Mariott after a wave of a 5 day magical stay at Royal Seaquarium Resort, 2 day horror story at Sunscape Curacao.

Mariott has great service, front office, terrific beaches for either splashing in the waves or snorkelling. As usual, they are terrific.
