“Could be much better”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2012

Very well located, but needs an urgent renewal. This is present specially in the bathroom, where a major improvement needs to be done. Rooms are good size, with a good bed and wonderful variety of pillows. Breakfast is varied and very tasty. Liked the orange juice. Service could be much better, specially at the reception. An example is that we arrived late, after 1 clock in the morning. Strange as it may seem, there was no restaurant open and no room service, so we had to take a taxi to go to town and buy a bottle of water. Not Marriot standard......

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the ground floor

I really don't understand the horrible reviews on this hotel. We stayed here7 years ago and wondered if we had over romanticized that trip and were setting ourselves up for disappointment in returning..NO! We love this resort. We had an ocean view room on the 2nd level, absolutely gorgeous view. The pool area is beautiful. The beach is perfect and private. The palapas are spread out so you are not on top of each other. The snorkeling right out in front of the resort by the dive shop is amazing. I don't understand how anyone could complain about this place. The bartenders are the best. Elvis and company were so generous in how happy they were to see us, surely they don't remember us, but they made us feel welcome. I love the addition of the board room up front on the beach to grab a drink or bite. The dive shop is wonderful and great to work with. The only thing we were not happy with was the price for the breakfast buffet, I think it was $28 + service charge, which to me is just too high, even though it looked delicious!....so there are alternatives, we grabbed something much less expensive from their Voila! cafe. No big deal. The rooms are not perfect, but more than nice enough for me. The beds are very comfortable and I love their toiletries. For those complaining, the only thing I could think of is, they are expecting the Ritz on a Marriott budget. I would most definitely return to this hotel and recommend to anyone but the most picky person who is looking for a problem. I only hope we can return to this resort soon! Kudos to the management as this is much nicer than the Marriott in Aruba.

Room Tip: Ocean view is absolutely gorgeous!

After a tough drive through Curacao I arrived at the Marriott Beach Resort to the most amazing staff.

From Chanteau at the front desk, to Samantha my housekeeper, the Yvette at Portofino and Meredith the Evening Supervisor, everyone was extremely accommodating and made me feel like I was the only guest in the place. I travel approx 150 nights/yr and honestly can't think of a more welcoming experience from staff and crew.

The hotel is very comfortable and for the region I'd consider it a luxury property. The beach is spectacular and great snorkeling abounds. The cocktails from the "BoardRoom" were the highlight of my sunset viewing every evening.

My room was an ocean front with a balcony. I've had many people comment my photos for the sunsets look like postcards and that's exactly what I remember.

I had a great facial at the spa, only suggestion, lose the loud clock and warm up the rooms.

Several others on this site have mentioned the price of the food and I agree it was high and there was not much variety. But, the food was good and I couldn't have asked for better service. I made the trek into town a few times for lunch supplies. Also, Voila the deli in the lobby has great options for a smaller price.

Another highpoint of my trip was a snorkeling lunch tour on Bounty Adventures. I highly reccommend.

I'll go back to Curacao someday, but doubt I would rent a car unless GPS comes a long ways or they choose to actually use street signs.

Room Tip: Room 241, 242 and 243 would be amazing options.

Dear Tldiet,

My favorite reviews are those from people that had the opportunity to see other hotels frequently like you did and still acknowledge that our people and property are amazing!

Thank you for that!

We shared your amazing review with Chanteau.,Samatha, Yvette and Meredith and Thank you again for letting us know about your great experience with us.

We hope to see you soon!

Just spent a week at this hotel in Curacao.
We travel to many islands and Curacao is a beautiful Island with a World of Potential.

The Marriott hotel grounds are extremely beautiful especially at night. The grounds are well kept and clean.
We stayed in a beachfront with a balconyroom 351, I recommend this room (palm trees to the side and not directly in front of your ocean view). The view of the sand, palm trees and ocean were breathtaking and you were able to see beautiful sunsets each night.

The rooms are a bit dated but the beds are very, very, comfortable including comfortable pillows.
Some complained about an odor from the air conditioning but we did not experience that.
Our AC worked great, actually exceptional.

The staff at the Marriott Curacao is very nice. The front desk were great to work with if we had any questions or needs and check-in and check-out was a breeze. The Concierge is a sweet woman who is willing to help but sometimes does not have information a Concierge should.....but she will go out of her way to try and help you.

Why Four Stars and not Five:
- The rooms can use a bit more updating and refreshing

- Yes, the food at the hotel is very good but you will pay for it. I guess most of the island with
nice restaurants will
cost a pretty penny. We did venture out to several top restaurants and paid a bit of a premium
but the atmosphere
and food were worth it.

- They do have entertainment some nights in the lobby which is nice. They should offer some
more free-bee's in
their lobby besides lemonade. Ice cream, frozen drinks, etc. We did stay at other hotels that
did offer this and one
gave free 5 minute massages in the lobby. Small things like this result in return customers and
recommendations.....good for business.

We did look at other hotels such as the Hilton, Renaissance and hotels on Hemmingway bay, although very nice, we would recommend and stay at this Marriott again.

Great hotel and GREAT ISLAND!

First let me say Curacao is definitely worth the trip! Visit Willemstad for shopping and some super restaurants (plus great international people watching!), Cas Abou beach is spectacular and rent a car to explore!
The Marriott sits on a lovely piece of property and the grounds are stunning. It is walking distance to Pirates Bay restaurant (fun - on the beach!) and Sjallotes (romantic) which were both excellent.
Our room was 1st floor beach front giving us easy and practically private access to the beach and water about 12 steps from our patio...worth the price! Pool is large and lovely with swim up bar and nice "smoothie bar" there too. Beach is nice - yes bring the water shoes to walk across the rocks for about 5 feet before you get to the soft sand...
We had a wonderful dinner on "campus" at Emeralds (Mussel night - delicious!) and another at Seabreeze overlooking the ocean...no complaints. Breakfast is the typical but plentiful buffet with everything you could possibly want. We ate breakfast and dinner - too full for lunch. Staff was very helpful and friendly. We had one rather strange incident when water was poured off the balcony above us onto our patio and once we reported it to the front desk, we had literally 5 people from the staff come to apologize and investigate the occurence over the next 1/2 hour. They cleaned the patio and when we came back to the room later that evening there was a lovely note, wine, cheese, fruit and crackers waiting for us! Things do happen even on vacation so we were very pleased by the reaction and way it was handled!
A couple negatives - the "Spa" is not really a spa. I had a very good massage but the environment is more doctor's office than spa. That needs improvement for sure. Staff seemed unorganized. The other improvement needed is the work out room. This is one way too small room and quite cramped - looks tired. We were there when the hotel was probably only 3/4 full so i can't imagine when it is in high season. Renovations needed in both these spaces!
Overall - super time and we will be back!

We just took our second trip to this island and hotel. Trip was great. We got an upgraded corner suite with an awesome balcony. While the trip was great the Marriott does need a makeover. I can see how some of the standard rooms may be sub par. But, this is the best venue in town. Don't even bother with the tired Hilton next door. And the Renaissance, while nice, is downtown with no beach. Curaçao is not like St Bartz or other Caribbean islands that offer 5 star facilities. Diving is great. Beaches are awesome. It could use better hotels.

We went to Curacao in November and we really enjoyed the experience. Here are the overall ratings and comments we would make.

Hotel
Renovated luxurious and exotical hotel, with great amenities. Free sunbeds and towels everywhere and plenty of space to get a chair at the sea or pool. We loved to see lezards and iguanas, exotic birds everywhere in the hotel.

Service
You have to understand that you are in the Carribean so this means that the customer service is not fast and very efficient even though people are very nice and kind. We were a bit dissapointed from the 5 star hotel service such as the Marriott, but we understand this might be more a cultural adjustment. Otherwise, cleaning was bright.

Food
We did not eat breakfast in the hotel, as it was really expensive (overrated), so we used the free shuttle bus provided by the hotel (that you need to book in advance !!!) and did some shopping in Willemstadt at the supermarket and floating market. We foudn pelnty of fresh cheap exotic fruits and basics for breakfast. Otherwise, the seebreaze bar is fine, even if not varied and as usual very expensive, like everywhere in the island !!! We were a but fed up with American burgers, fries and quesadillas...we really wanted to eat salads and carribean fresh fish, but we had to go to the next Hotel at Sjalotte for dinner to find typical carribean food (still expensive but really good). The portofino restaurant was closed for renovation during our stay and we found disapointing that the hotel did not make up for this lack of food choice, especially as there are not many restaurants around. The Pirate Bay is about 5 minutes on foot after the Hilton Hotel and is really a nice restaurant on the beach where you will be able to taste local food with nice reggae live music.

Rental car
Be careful with any booking you would make in advance with National/Alama as they lost our reservation and were not very efficient in finding a solution to make up for this. We eventually got an upgraded car 4 hours later, only because we insisted on getting a car fast. The service was not efficient nor very customer oriented. If we did not make proposals ourselves, we could simply not get anything for the day. This was quite unacceptable from a 5 star hotel such as the Marriott. Important: if you wish to go off track, don't forget to get a 4x4 drive car since roads are really not in good shape and sometimes you simply don't have any paved roads to access beaches or parks.

Beach
The beach was really a paradise, white sandy beaches and very nice snorkelling in front of the hotel. Go to Porto Mary by car (30 minutes away) and you will find even more beautiful beaches and snorkeling spots.

Rooms are very comfortable, clean and large. The fridge was useful even if not very cold.

Room Tip: Ask for a complex view almost same value as front beach rooms.
