“Ocean Front”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2008

Went with large group and rooms were given by luck of the draw. As luck would have it we got ocean front first floor. We traveled in a Large group of about 200 & we arrived at 11AM and rooms were not even close to being ready. Tip go find housekeeping and tip her $10 US and get your room. Some people didn't get their room until 4 PM but were were in the room by noon.

Beautiful hotel right on a "rocky" beach'. Like others have said bring your water shoes. Beautiful Dutch town Willemstad. Lead us to want to go to The Netherlands. Overall the Hotel was a good experience I would say they do need to improve getting guests in to their rooms by or closer to check in time Eat lunch by the pool and hang out in the hot tub at night. Small casino but thats not our thing anyway. Week split between Aruba and Curacao. Now only if they would put this hotel in Aruba we would have had it all. Stayed at The Golden Tulip in Aruba and while we like Aruba better of the two Islands we prefered this hotel over the Golden Tulip. Once is probably enough for Curacao still had an enjoyable time.

Stayed here Jan 20 - 23 and combined the trip with 4 days from Aruba. Hotel is absolutely gorgeous. In fact, Marriott has this hotel photo on their Rewards card for Elite Members. The beach sand is soft and snorkeling is fabulous. The lobby is open and very well maintained. This hotel has a great snack shop with reasonable prices (you typically expect to get gouged) but, try the Cuban sandwich -- great value and a big meal. The Portofino restaurant has All-You-Can eat Italian on Tuesdays. It is okay but, they do prepare fresh pasta anyway you like it. We'll definitely return!!

We just returned from one week at The Marriott. We had a great week and loved the hotel. Here are the specifics:
The Hotel including the grounds:
Rooms were kept spotlessly clean every day and we even had evening service once I requested it.
Everything worked perfectly (air cond., lights, etc.)
The grounds and public spaces in and around the hotel were also clean and well kept.
The Food:
OK, our only complaint; the food is not the best (except breakfast, which we liked ). Lunch by the pool was ok
average hotel food.
The Restaurants:
Sjallots at the Floris Suites Hotel:
Very European (actually so was everywhere). Very good food but VERY small portions. Good service
Bistro La Clochard:
Outstanding!
Gouvenour:
Very good and reasonably priced
Portifino (The "fine dining" restaurant at The Marriott):
OK..not bad but should have been great
The People:
From the staff at The Marriott who could not do enough for the guests,to the people in the town, their attitude and friendliness was very welcoming . Walking around day or night (even by myself) was very comfortable. People were always smiling.
Sightseeing:
We did not do any (just lied like lumps every day) except to shop in town (nothing much to buy except trinkets) and see the oldest Synogogue in the Western Hemisphere. We also went to the Kura Landa Hotel in town and "looked around". Lots of people went snorkeling and/or diving and took other tours of the island.
Everyone we met felt pretty much the same way we do..we'd all go back!

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Marriott. It was a wonderful place to forget about life and leave your cares behind. Since the beach was just outside our room, we enjoyed the proximity to the ocean. The beach was a little rocky. No problem. Just bring sand socks and forget about it. You can also purchase them at the hotel for about $20. The pool, entrance, and lobby were lovely and definitely enhanced the total effect. Our room could have been nicer. As previous reviews stated, the rooms are a little tired and need to be updated. I would say that the rooms are more representative of a Courtyard than a Marriott hotel. However, they were clean and the lack of luxury did not affect our stay in the least. Waiting outside is a little piece of paradise.
The food at the hotel was generally good. We enjoyed lunch at the Seabreeze Bar and had one good dinner at Portofinos. However, if you are looking for excellent food, I can recommend two restaurants in town. We had an excellent meal at Bistro Le Clochard. My husband's scallop appetizer was to die for as well as his chateaubriand. The restaurant was built into the ramparts of Fort Rif, and we enjoyed eating on the water's edge. The second restaurant that we thoroughly enjoyed was the Astrolab inside the Kura Hulanda compound. This is probably the most exquisite meal I have been fortunate enough to enjoy in a long time. The outdoor dining room was situated on a patio around a lovely fountain. My husband ordered native lobster, and I ordered roast duck. Both were remarkable. For dessert, the melt away chocolate cake was exceptional. The atmosphere and the quality of the food made this a truly pleasurable dining experience.
The nice thing about this island is that you can do as little or as much as you like. Snorkeling is good on the Marriott Beach. The town is fun for a day's outing. Friends who swam with the dolphins said that it was an experience that you will never forget. My advise is to just go and enjoy the ambiance. We would definitely return to the Marriott.

We visited the island and stayed at the Marriott for a short four day stay. Given our limited time, we wanted to make the most of our short stay, but quickly found that 24 hours later ---we had accomplished everything that we wanted to do. After we arrived we hit the beach and snorkeled, and later had dinner at Hooks Hut. The next day we rented a car and visited the downtown area in the morning, and then in the afternoon we visited two other west side beaches and ended with an early dinner at Jaanchies.

The Hotel- the entrance, pool area, and grounds were beautiful. The room was standard fare for a Marriott type property and served its purpose. It was very clean, and the beds were very comfortable. We had a ground floor room (150's) and felt it would have been better to be up a floor, simply for privacy, as the beach was literally a few feet away.

We ate at all three restaurants on the property and found the food to be very good. Portofino's was a little pricey for the breakfast buffet $12-$18, but the food selection was good. The Emerald Lounge and the poolside restaurant had daily drink specials, happy hour, and also some great menu items. Portofino's was also nice for dinner which we did our last night. Watch your bill as they charge an automatic 12% service fee (tip) at the bars/restaurants and we soon found that we had double tipped a few times before we figured it out.

The downtown area was a nice place to visit and see first-hand, however after a few hours we were ready to leave. We felt that unless you are a "true" shopper looking for jewelry, or other more high-end purchases at a discount, there really wasn't much to do. We visited the "floating market" which really was for locals buying fruit, and purchased a few trinkets from a downtown vendor.

The "west side" of the island was breathaking, with rugged terrain, and great views around every corner. It was a little desolate at times, but the signage was very easy to follow. We visited Porto Mari Beach and Knip Beach, both were beautiful. Porto Mari was somewhat busy, but had a nice bar and dive shop there. Knip Beach was less populated, actually there was about a dozen people there during our visit. We were surprised to find that in the end the best snorkeling was actually at the Marriott Beach.

Hooks Hut was a 10 minute walk down past the Hilton, it was a nice place right on the beach. We found the service to be extremely slow, initially we weren't sure if it was this place or the island mentality, in the end we decided it was a little of both. Food was very good, we had four drinks, two entrees, and a appetizer and it was $68, which we felt was well worth it for what we got. We were told by the hotel it was ok to walk there but to take a cab back given it would be dark out, but we walked anyway without issue.

Jaanchies on WestPunt was a great island experience, where else can you dine on iguana, conch, and goat at the same time? It was fun meeting Jaanchie and hearing his presentation of the menu. They also had some fish and shrimp options as well.

One thing to add is we always felt safe on the island. We were never approached to buy anything or made to feel uncomfortbale by our surroundings, which really was an added bonus of Curacao over other places that we have visited.

My husband and I just returned from our weeklong honeymoon in Curacao and had a blast! The Marriot, as the reviews say, was great and by far is the only place I would stay on the island (it is only one of two high-end resorts it seems).

The staff was very accommodating, nice and welcoming - we had no problems with the staff at all. The property itself is beautiful - just like the pictures on the web site. We were offered an upgrade to a beachfront room for $75/nt and it was well worth it. Rooms were typical Caribbean decor, could be updated, but we had no complaints about anything being dirty or poorly maintained. The beach is rocky only in one area, but we managed to swim just fine on other parts of the beach and the snorkeling there was great, but bring your own equipment because renting can add up and the snorkeling is that great that you'll want to do it more than once or twice. Just down from the Marriott is a path that takes you to the Hilton (which looked like a DUMP), but the snorkeling off that area was awesome too!

We were also very impressed with the food at the Marriott. For hotel food, the burgers, salads and sushi we had while we were on property were very good. The food around the island was also very good, however, there were a few places I wanted to drive to for dinner but it is very difficult to get around the island at night (no street signs) so I am disappointed we were not able to try a few places I had on my list. We dined at the Governor downtown which was very good and decently priced for a nice dinner out and we tried a few cafes downtown, which were great and very cheap! We also tried Hook's Hut at the recommendation of an article I read in the NY Times and the food was the least impressive we had on the island. The environment is great, but the food was not that great and overpriced.

We rented a car for 4 days, which I highly recommend as taxi prices are very very expensive and some of the most fun we had was driving around and exploring. We had a wonderful time driving around the island finding beaches and different places we came across, although there is not much, it does take a sense of adventure to enjoy the island in my opinion. The island is not very touristy, which was a plus for us, and we were only two of a handful of American tourists which was very neat.

We visited Cas About a beach about 20 min from the Marriott, which I recommend, and took the day trip to Klein Curacao - a deserted island 1.5-hours off the coast. The island is literally deserted, not much shade or much of anything there, but the water was crystal clear., some of the clearest I have ever seen. I however, felt a day trip here was a bit too long for me, but my husband really enjoyed it.

Overall, I think the Marriott is THE place to stay in Curacao. We had a blast on the island and are anxious to see the Hyatt and Westin that we heard are being built. We'll go back, but not for 5-plus years or so.

this hotel was not a Marriott it was like a cheap best western real cheap. By the managers office inside there are bird nests in the light fixtures. The rooms are so dirty there are big stains on the furniture and when asked to see another room all the other ones were worse then the last one we were in, the management is well aware of the problems but chose not to confront these problems, Rats on the beach big rats like NYC sewer rats not small mice.... Algae in the whirlpool big chunks!!!!! casino is a joke its about as big as a high school bathroom oh yes but they did have 1 crap table that opens at 9 pm and a poker tournament at one table but for the full two weeks we were there the poker table was never open. the food is the worst the mini burgers are half a Burger cut into four pieces and put on little buns not little individual hand made burgers like one would expect. The deli had leaks like you would expect on the titanic..Also the deli does not have soap at the sink for staff to wash and clean up with when we asked to use their sink, now that's clean. If you are looking for a dirty third world hotel this is the one for you.. Stay away if you know whats good....
