“Quite outstanding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2012

I was taken to this Synagogue as part of a tour led by local guide Gigi Scheper. I was so impressed by the history and ambiance of this building. The attached museum holds relics that I had never seen the like of before; these include replcas of the tombstones from the ancient cemetery with very intricate and detailed markings. A fascinating experience,

“Neat history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2012

Very cool piece of history that is worth seeing. No one really mentions that there is a small museum inside as well - which takes more time to explore than the synagogue.

“Amazingly beautiful woodwork 280 years old!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012

If you are Jewish, this place is important because it was the first synagogue in the new world. The woodwork is all mahogony and it looks like it is brand new. the museum is an interesting history of the Jewish community on Curacao. They raised the oney to create Wilhemina plaza. among other things.

“A Hidden Jewel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

During a cruise stop in Willemstad, Curacao, my husband and I took a short and safe walk to the Mikve Israel-Emanuel Synagogue. It did not disappoint! The synagogue boasts beautiful architecture and woodwork based on an earlier place of worship in the Netherlands. The sand floor (found in many Jewish synagogues around the world) is a meaningful reminder of the tragedy of the Spanish Inquisition, and also of the Jewish exodus through the desert led by Moses. Your entrance fee also includes a visit to the museum and gift shop adjacent to the synagogue. We read about the history of the local Jews, and saw the traditional silver wares of the Jewish Community of Curacao. I would definitely recommend a stop if you ever find yourself in this quaint Dutch town in the warm Caribbean.
