We stayed in Avila hotel during our honeymoon. It was great! When we arrived we found a personal card from the manager and champaign in our room. Every morning we found some fresh breads at our door.
Beautiful hotel, very clean. We stayed in de ocagon wing wich was very nice. the room had good aircondition. It's an intimite and romantic hotel.
To willemstad it is a 20 min. walk. In day time that's fine. By night it is better to take a taxi.
The staff of the hotel is very friendly.

We had dinner at the blues cafe, we enjoyed that. We also twice had dinner at Rozandaels. I read about this restaurants in previous reviews and it was great!
I liked all the antillian food!

We spent a week here for our honeymoon. At the onset we were very disappointed, but after a couple of days (and two room changes, including a $100/night upgrade) we were pretty happy. It is a very pretty hotel with two pleasant beaches and a nice pool. On one side is the original building and the "Schooner Bar" - our first room was in that building and it was a bit dark, a bit dismal and smelled like deodorizer. The Schooner Bar is a bit downtrodden: old wooden stools, greasy food, bad drinks....

On the other side of the property is the new section - modern rooms and modern pool bar with food service. It was honestly like being in another (much more pleasant) world. Our first room there was sunny and pleasant (despite the mold stains on the wall); we would have stayed there for the rest of the week had it not been for the barking throughout the night of the neighborhood dog(s) and the crowing of the rooster (the room was near the end of the hotel building). For an additional $100/night (including the tax and fee) we moved to a room that looks like the one on the hotel's website.

I had noticed when doing research that there were some complaints by reviewers about the service which I wrongly disregarded. The people are generally very nice. However the service is for the most part pretty terrible, and that is partially due to the fact that the food and drink is, for the most part, pretty bad. They could not make a mojito. They could make frozen drinks, but seeing the cartons of commercial, ready-made margarita, etc... on the bar was pretty unenticing. Vodka & Cranberry came out as watery glass of Vodka & Maraschino Cherry & Cherry Juice. We quickly learned to stick to bottled beer.

Dinner at the Belle Terrace restaurant was nice, as was the Sunday brunch. Like the other places we came across in Curacao, they were very expensive. NYC prices, but no where near NYC quality. We had enjoyable meals, but I cannot say that we had a really good meal the entire time we were there, and for $30 or more an entree, I think the meal should be pretty good. The food at the Blues Restaurant was just not good (though the live music was terrific!).

Also on the plus side: the hotel has terrific snorkeling and swimming, the gym is really nice (yes, you have to pay to get a towel - how crazy is that?) and it is very close to downtown Willemsted (Punda).

In sum, while it has some nice qualities, I did not think that the Avila, or Curacao as a whole, is a good place for a holiday as compared to other places I have been in Puerto Rico, Mexico or Hawaii. This is definitely not a 4-star hotel.

Love the place. Has a great atmosphere and very friendly people. Not so touristy-feeling. Private beach and very serene! One of my favourite places in the world!

also slow internet and no soundproofing to hallways. Some condensation from strong AC in tropical climate. Open air halls flood during low-season from rain.

Gorgeous flat screen tv should have more channels than perhaps 6-7 depending on whats working. Has bbc thank god.

Food is tsty but almost all seafood at either restaurant. and seriously for the price, no room service? Cafe is great but never open.

Views and water amazing, good snorkeling right off beach. However affiliated scuba center is not nearly as close as publicized and requires a taxi or bus. Possibly there is a litle shop next door but it doesn't book boat tours or anything. Also to downtown because neighborhood is not great, I wish they had free shuttle (again b/c you pay a lot for one of the new rooms) Anyways the downtown is more boring than I expected for one of the bigger cities in carribean.

Also lots of construction when I was there, which they did at early morning and not afternoon. Kind of annoying if you're on vacation

Great place overall, staff very amazing, these are just my complaints. For the money it is as good as you would expect.

We stayed at Avila hotel for five nights at the end of March. Compared to other Mega hotels such as Marriott and Hilton, Avila hotel definitely has an European flare. It is smaller, other guests are mostly Dutch, and definitely quieter, not much of the American-style all-inclusive vacation thing going on. We liked it very much for its classy atmosphere.
This hotel has a small beach attached to it, and the sunset is gorgeous. The front beach has reef where you can snorkel, and the reef here is better than other beaches recommended, such as Portmari. Tons of fish to watch. The hotel has a small bar, buffet once a week, and nice pool too. The fitness center here is the cleanest, the most modern one I have ever seen!
The only one downside is that it is about five or less minutes of driving to Punda, the city center, but we never found it a problem.

Modern, cozy, well located, great gastronomy & staff. Money value sure i worth it
