Came to this hotel for my honeymoon and it was an experience. First let me say that the hotel itself is beautiful and the staff is extremely friendly. However, I booked this room 6 months early in the Blues Wing but upon arriving to our room my new husband and i happened upon two queen beds. Not quite what we ordered for our honeymoon room. Unfortunately there was no room comparable to what we had and were forced to stay where we were which turned out to be a great decision. If staying in the Blues Wing try to get a room that faces away from the hotel beach and out to the ocean. Every night was a beautiful sunset. The food in all the restaurants was amazing and the bar had a nice array of local drinks and ethnic foods to try. Though a little pricey, I was more than satisfied with every meal. The hotel is also close enough to Willemstad and near by restaurants if you feel like leaving the resort for dinner.

Room Tip: The Blues Wing is great if you face away from the hotel.

We stayed here from Nov 30th until Dec. 8th. Check in was a breeze. Our room was #283 by the ocean in the Blues section. The room was clean and bright and always kept at tip top shape. Plenty of towels and pillows. Small refigerator for our needs. Balcony was terrific! We spent many early morning hours and late evening 'sun set' time just relaxing and listening to the waves. The two beaches are kept tip top clean of any debris. Snorkling is right off the beach, no need to go wondering off anywhere else. All the time we were there neither beach was crowded and room, always, for all who came. Bar service was superb. Drinks were pretty good. Breakfast buffet has a great variety. A bit pricey at about 17$ per person, but all in all we used it more than not. Lunch is good, specifically the salmon sandwich. So why 4 instead of 5 stars?
Here is why. We had dinner once at the Belle Terrace and once at the Blues. Dinner (Belle Terrace) is quite pricey and a bit lacking in quantity. The service is superb. Don't get me wrong, the quality (taste) is certainly there, but we left hungry to be honest. I would suggest the management add salads and bread to every meal. The dessert was a tad skimpy.
Dinner at the Blues was a bit better in quantity, but not as good as the Belle in quality. They have a dish called 'something Tapas' I forget the exact name. Having spent time in Spain I can tell you these are not Spain style tapas.... close, but no cigar! Still they were not bad at all.
Margaritas at the beach were great, but not at the Blues. All other drinks were great. Mojitos were too expensive at $12 dollars (ouch!).
Would we go back? Hands down 'You Bet'! Place is terrific and would gain 5 stars from us if they only upped the food quantity a bit more for Dinner, all other meals were just fine.

The location is perfect...20 minutes from downtown...steps away from nice restaurants. walking downtown may spook you as there a few abandoned houses along the way. We walked it day or night and had no problems... Natives are quite friendly and I spoke with them frequently (I am fluent in spanish...and they in quite few languages).

I am in Avila for the third time. I like the perfect location on the beach, on the walking distance of the center of Willemstad and a few restaurants. We , my husband and I, are coming here on our way to Bonaire where we are going for business. That's why we only have time to stay here for 4 or 5 days andThat's why I can not book a " package travel" and I make the reservation directly with the hotel. And this is the problem. When I came here for the first time, the customers were quite elegant and certainly from a high level. Now, it is a mixed " population" . No problem with this but I don't think that it's fair to ask high prices to some people and much lower to others....

Anyway, I will come back because we like the Blues Wing rooms on the sea...very romantic..not new and a little bit old fashion but the view is fantastic. Ask one of the two rooms on the end....you will not be disappointed...

The food in the restaurants is ok...not extraordinary. And if you expect an exciting nightlife, don't go there....the breakfast is very good but too expensive.

And the last bad thing: the hotel has to earn money in these difficult times and they organize a lot of parties and reception for companies of Curacao... This results sometimes in a terrible noise and a lot of " strangers" in the hotel...

The personel is sometimes completely terrible... The working rythm here is not the one we use to have in our european countries. And a smile is not on every face....

But this Curacao... So. Let it be...inshallah ....

Room Tip: Blues wing for your honeymoon... Room 290 is perfect...on the sea!!!!

Lovely hotel close to Willemstad! Very nice service and a great beach. We had a room at the blues wing and were pleased to enjoy the sunsets each evening which was delighting!
Food is good too and having a romantic dinner at the beach is a must :)
We would recommend to rent a car as the hotel (even if it is close to the city) is in an area where you should not go out after sunset (accordingly to recommendations). Overall an outstanding hotel!

We went back to the Avila Hotel after 10 years. We stayed at the hotel for our honeymoon and returned last week for our 10 year wedding anniversary. The hotel has added a number of upgrades (pool, upgraded shops, upgraded coffee shop, etc.). We loved the new facilities and stayed in the Blues Wing just like our honeymoon. The Blues Wing is an excellent experience and has my highest recommendation. The beach and pool are great and the dining was acceptable. The biggest need for improvement is the front desk staff. They were friendly but lacked basic knowledge of the area (places to eat, walking distance, mini mart, etc.). This was extremely frustrating as we would ask where we could purchase basic sundries or a recommendation on a restaurant and were told nothing or inaccurate information. The front desk staff was also wrong about taxi rates or we were constantly ripped off. This would include our trip to the airport where we were charged a 25% extra charge due to the time of day (early in the morning). This made me feel we were being ripped off by the taxi company the hotel recommended or the front desk staff was not educated on the pricing. Our trip was great and we loved the hotel. I think that a little training of the front desk staff would go a long way to creating a better experience.

Pros:
The beach and our suite were the best part of our stay at the Avila and in Curacao. We made our reservation via email and to Avila's credit we were given the La Belle Alliance One Bedroom Suite we requested. However, we had to wait until almost 4:00pm to check-in despite early arrival and a conversation with the manager. We can't quite figure out why it took 4 hours to get our suite ready. Interestingly, we had to check-out precisely at 12:00noon due to a pending early arrival. Nevertheless, the suite was exactly what we had imagined. It was comfortable with a nice view of the Caribbean Sea and resort. We enjoyed watching the sunset every evening and truly appreciated the beach which is clean, quiet and good for swimming/snorkeling. The resort/beach is ideal for adults/couples of all ages that appreciate tranquility.

Other positive experiences include the following:
Avila: The most hospitable and friendly members of the Avila staff we came in contact with was Renzo and the omelet man/maker (name ??) at breakfast in the Avila Café. The best service on the resort was at the Blues Restaurant and the food was pretty good as well.
Restaurant & Café Gouverneur de Rouville: Had nice lunch - good food and experience thanks to Stephanie.
The Scuba Lodge & Suites: Lovely young man (name ??) behind bar made our night.

Cons:
Excellent customer service is just not the standard in Curacao. Given the rates at the Avila, I rank the service as "average." Ironically, for a polyglot society communication is poor as well. Hospitality is also not their forte. Again, the most hospitable and friendly members of the Avila staff we came in contact with was Renzo and the omelet man/maker (name ??) at breakfast. Compared to other tourist bound countries such as Italy and Mexico, Curacao is just not hospitable in general and the Avila is no exception. For example, on the day we checked out we had a late flight so we decided to hang around the resort until it was time to go to the airport, but it started to rain and heavily at times. Most of the resort is open air and guest had nowhere to go except crowd into the Pool Bar which was the only thing open. The Avila Café had just closed which is more sheltered from the rain. In our experience if that would have happened in Italy - - they would have kept the Avila Café open and give guests at least the option to order at the bar and come sit in the Avila Café since it was the only dry area available to sit, eat and drink.

The Avila lobby is not attractive or inviting. In fact, I would describe the decor as "tacky," the paint on the walls is chipping and the seating area tables were smuggled. The front exterior of the hotel does not have much curve appeal and the fountain was dirty.

Other related negative experiences include the following:
On the walk from the Avila to downtown waterfront there is a lot of construction as mentioned by other reviewers. Although Curacao has amazing potential with its interesting history, unique Dutch architecture and colorful buildings, UNESCO sites, great snorkeling and diving, especially if and when the construction on the road from the Avila to the waterfront is completed, there are several persisting issues.

In addition to the construction there is much trash everywhere from broken bottles to abandoned vehicles. The streets are filthy. If you walk one block directly across from the hotel it is a bit scary. If you take taxis some are frightening. The airport bathrooms and gate waiting areas are disgusting. One must wonder what the Airport does with the $32 per person they charge international travelers upon leaving the country. Dutch Antilles Express airlines ground crew at the Curacao airport is horrible.

Unfortunately, the negative issues take away from the overall ambiance. Notwithstanding the negative aspects, we are grateful for the opportunity to visit Curacao/Avila and enjoyed the positive experiences.

The hotel has two connected beaches. The current runs from one to the other outside the breakwater and allows for a drift snorkel along the reef from one to the other. The reef has stag horn coral, brain coral and schools of tangs. It is not quite up to an outlying reef, but is really not bad form being so close to shore. The hotel is also very nice with updated rooms in the octagon wing. The superior deluxe rooms are very spacious. Rooms 312 and 315 offer direct ocean views from their patios. It is a 15 minute walk to town and 15 minutes to the grocery store. They also offer a shuttle bus to downtown during the week.

Room Tip: The upper rooms at the end of the octagon wing offer the best ocean views from the patio,
