“Stay here!”

Avila Beach Hotel

Mar 7, 2008

I visited Avila in early February 2006 with my parents. We stayed in one of the Suites. It was amazing! We had a wonderful long weekend in Curacao.

The staff was accommodating. The view of the ocean was gorgeous. Our suite, #176, basically had its own private beach within one of the hotel's lagoons. We sunned ourselves everyday and enjoyed evening cocktails each night on our private deck.
We ate at the hotel restaurant BLUES one evening. The restaurant sits on a pier overlooking the ocean. The waves are crashing against the beach as you're eating dinner. It was a wonderful beach vacation! There were plenty of local restaurants to eat at as well.
All in all - we had a great time there. The local culture and charisma was wonderful. If you're going to Aruba - DON'T. Go to Curacao instead. It's a sleepier island, with more of a European feel. There's less congestion and less of the trashy hotel crowds. And, it's A LOT less expensive.

“loved the avila”

Avila Beach Hotel

Mar 5, 2008

I stayed a whole week at the Avila hotel. It was Beautiful! The room was quiet, peaceful and clean. I enjoyed the restaurants at the resort and the staff was friendly and courteous. You could do as much or as little as you wished. The beach was lovely and the tradewinds blew constantly so you didn't feel overly hot. I feel that the whole experience was wonderful and a great deal for the money! I will return for another visit. I have never felt so relaxed!

“just ok and curacao- avoid it”

Avila Beach Hotel

Feb 20, 2008

first of all - why are you going to curacao? don't. but that's another story. the avila is ok. rooms are small. not much for view. beach is very windy. meals vary from average to inedible and i chipped a tooth on some sand or rock. you have to like european style un-private bath right off the bed (octagon area) with a sheet and heavy down comforter. a/c controls aren't sensitive so it's sort of all or none. tv reception and channels are dismal. staff is super friendly but about as dumb and unhelpful as a board. if you ask about any activity, any directions...anything to do with the island they just smile and say they don't know or for directions "its just down the road". oh, they add 10$ donation to a "charity" to your bill. if you don't see this and ask to have it taken off you will pay it unknowingly. there is a 12% service fee added to everything but staff will point out that's not a tip that goes to them. the gift shop sells awful and defective clothing that falls apart when you put it on. sorry, can't find anything good to say other than it's ok looking and there's plenty of security to keep all the drug crazed, drunk street people everywhere out of the compound.

Initially booking our stay the Avila Beach Hotel looked extremely warm and inviting online. Upon arriving at the Avila we were greeted with extremely poor service from the front desk agent and from the rest of the staff. Everyone seemed to have this negative, unfriendly disposition from the very start of our horrible stay. We booked and called the day before to confirm that we had reserved 1 room with a king bed. Once we arrived, our reservation was completely and totally incorrect. They had reserved us a room with two beds instead of the king. The staff was completely useless in helping us resolve the problem. The management and staff were extremely rude and unprofessional. Also, this was our first time visiting the island of Curacao and was interested in exploring the island. Normally, nice resorts offer some kind of assistance in helping you plan your stay while visiting. The Avila had a stand with brochures. No one seemed interested in helping us plan our week while we were visiting. The food was totally over priced and wasn't that great either. Throughout the remainder of our stay we felt the staff had this general snobby attitude that infected the resort with such negativity. It didn't feel very comfortable or relaxing being there. We managed to tough it out for at least 48hrs before relocating to the Marriott. Which was 110% better!!!! Read my review on the Marriott in Curacao. To all future travelers out there Id stay away from The Avila. Save your money and invest into a resort that will yield better memories for your vacation. If you have any questions please dont hesitate to ask me.

“Beautiful location, so so management”

The Avila is set right on the beach and has it's own coves and open air restaurants. It is a beautiful hotel and provides a very relaxing , laid back setting, perfect for vacations. We booked a room in the Blues Wing which is right on a jetty jutting into the ocean. The view from the balcony was amazing. Only problem was the air conditioning did not work and there were ants all over the bathroom. We informed the front desk upon arrival and they said it would cool down and just took time. I guess the ants were just part of being on the jetty. After the second day with no air, we complained again and they had a repairman look at it, stating it worked. After the third night with it still not working, the manager finally came down and after walking into the stifling room, could not deny it was broken. They moved us to the Octagon wing into a very nice room with a free bottle of wine. Sad that it took three nights of us sleeping in sweat to get this done. The front desk staff were terrible...they seemed put out when asked to call a taxi and did not want to hear complaints. Major attitude and for no reason. The hotel was under construction and the noise from it was quite loud and unavoidable throughout the day, never mind the dust clouds that would descend on the bars below. The spa was pretty plain and third world. A massage with no peaceful music?

Despite the room problems and tacky front desk, we still had a great time but that is due to the beauty of the island and hotel setting but not the hotel management. There's a great European flare to the hotel and it's very modern and laid back, but not sure I'd be running back to the Avila any time soon.
