“Always a wonderful vacation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013

This was our second visit to the Lodge in four years.

We absolutely love the island. It is peaceful and not touristy. The people are welcoming and it is a very relaxed place. It is also very beautiful and there is a lot to do even if you are not a diver.

The Lodge has its strengths and weaknesses. Overall the staff are friendly and helpful. The grounds are nicely kept. The rooms are ok, not luxurious, but all you are using them for is sleep and they are fine for that. The pool area is beautiful. The only issue I had was that the staff don't start clean up until quite late in the morning and I would get there's around 9 so I would have to clean whatever area I chose. However, most of the guests don't arrive until much later and the area would be cleaned by then. The towels are also not out until much later, but you can get them at the front desk if you are an early riser.

The beach is ok. The downside is all the coral but this is not something the hotel can help. If you want sandy beaches curaçao is not for you. There are some good public beaches, particularly Porto Marie, with a sandy beach, sandy bottom and all the amenities you need. At the Lodge the beach fills up so if you want a spot you have to get there early. It is still, however, a beautiful beach, especially early in the morning and late at night when the crowds are not there.

The dive shop is fabulous and everyone is very friendly. The boats were a little crowded this time out so my partner did more shore diving. There are always good divers around so you can team up and have people to go out with if the boat is too crowded.

The restaurants are the real downfall of the resort. We had dinner twice in the main restaurant. The first time we ordered fajitas and while they tasted very good they only gave us fillings for one person, even though we had two orders. We ordered them the second time as well but the kitchen was having issues. Diners had literally been waiting two hours to be served. When we got our food you could tell they had rushed and it was not vey good. That night the problem seemed to be the wait staff who went to all the tables and took drink orders and then gave all the drink orders in at one time. They then went and got all the dinner orders and submitted them en masse to the kitchen, with predictable results. Breakfast was just an atrocity - in quality, service and price.

We lunched at the beach grill every day. The food was good and it was a relaxed atmosphere. The staff were friendly. It was not fast service but it was not really a problem as we preferred a more relaxed lunch .

There are food alternatives . You can walk down the street to Sol Food on Fridays through Sunday. It is owned by an American ex pat couple and they do an amazing job. I was a little leary the first time when I saw pizzas and burgers but Sunshine really has a knack for interesting twists - the savory panna cotta with corn was amazing - and David excels at the grill. Further down the road is Jaanchies for more local fare. A short car ride will take you to various other restaurants inWestpunt. And it is worth the drive into Wilemsted for provisions for breakfast and lunch. The Dutch have some seriously good yogurt and muelsix. There are also many options in Wilemstad, which is only 40 minutes by car. I highly recommend renting a car to get around.

The grounds of the Lodge are beautiful and the atmosphere is very relaxing. We always meet people who rent apartments nearby but it is nice not to have to do your own cleaning on vacation. The housekeeping while we were there was very good. Generally the room was cleaned later in the day but we weren't sitting in the room anyway so it mostly did not matter.

I would say we had extremely good service from the 'bellman'. He really helped us out with instructions, advice, and a boost to the car when we drained the battery.

We were there over Christmas 2012 and did not have a room safe, which I really did not like. The subsequent theft I am reading about confirms the problem with having to leave everything at the front desk, although we did not have any problems ourselves. I would have felt better if I could have locked up cameras and electronics while we were out for the day. However, I also understand this is temporary. We did have a safe on our first visit.

The reality is that we will likely return to curaçao and if we do we will once again stay at the Lodge. The advantages definitely outweighs the disadvantages as long as you avoid having to eat at the main restaurant.

“Enjoyable experience - good for families”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

My husband, 15 month old daughter and I spent a long MLK weekend in January at the Lodge Kura Hulanda. We were in a junior suite - the beach front first floor suites. It had a nice patio (no umbrella), and a good view of the beach. The pictures posted on here and the hotel website were accurate - the room was nice and we had no issues with it. We were in room 104 and while there were some trees blocking our view compared to the higher numbered rooms, we were closer to the beach, restaurants and lobby which I liked, also we could hear the waves. We also stayed in room 101 which was too close to the main lobby and also trees blocked the view. But the main issue with that room is the proximity to the lobby.

This room is perfect for young families because there was plenty of room for my daughter and when she was napping we had plenty of room to relax on the patio. It was such a short walk to the beach that I came back to the room to make lunch and bring it down to the beach (a huge plus!!). And there is a small kitchenette in the room which was perfect for breakfast, lunch, and lots of beer saving us quite a bit of money. After reading many of the other reviews, I expected to have to pay for pots and pans but we did not. There was even dish soap and a sponge. Lots of glasses, silverware, etc. We did not have coffee filters but the type of coffee maker did not require a filter.

I really had no issues with the room or the house-keeping. Our air conditioner was great, so great as a matter of fact that it froze after 2 days which required us to move to room 101 for the last 2 nights of our stay. Well, this could happen anywhere and I didn't really have any major issues with the way it was handled. The staff did quickly move us to another room (that was close), allowed us to keep our stuff in our original room, which was nice because it didn't require us to pack in the middle of our stay, and when it was not fixed by the end of the next day quickly responded by letting us know we could stay in the next room again. There wasn't the best communication from staff to staff regarding what was going on, but because each subsequent was quickly responsive it didn't really make a difference. At the end of the day, it was a minor inconvenience.

The rooms were clean enough, but we didn't spend much time there. The bathroom seems to have been updated in the last 5 years or so, it was getting a little moldy but clearly had modern updates and was overall just fine. The wicker furnishing didn't bother me - I guess if you are expecting super luxury it wouldn't suffice but for $250 per night it was more than adequate - and the view and access to the beach was great! The staff was perfectly pleasant but then again I had very low expectations after reading many of these reviews. I don't demand much and don't need much service when I stay at a hotel, so what I got was more than enough of what I needed. The sandwiches on check-in were a nice touch!

I didn't try any of the restaurants for dinner after reading reviews on here. We did Landhuis Misje (one night) and Sol Food (two nights) for dinners. The service was very slow but very good - the pacing of the service is just now what we are used to but if you are expecting that it is fine. They were clearly very attentive at both restaurants - bringing things for my daughter that we didn't even ask for (a small scoop of ice cream, a ziplock bag for leftover fruit, a small bowl and spoon, a toy for her to play with). We had no complaints at either restaurant, with Sol Food being a slightly better value and walking distance from the hotel. We made reservations by email in advance to both, and Sunshine from Sol Food emailed her list of attractions and directions for around Westpunt and it was super helpful.

We had the hotel buffet breakfast one morning and were not impressed - just not good presentation of food and the food was very mediocre. Yes, the view is nice but I would skip it.

Overall this review seems mediocre but actually we were very happy with everything at the hotel and the local restaurants. We did not see many sights since we had the small child but the beach, restaurants and relaxing hit the spot. Oh, and the pool and hammocks were great.

I wish we were as pleased with thrifty rent-a-car which rented us a car with a car seat that I literally had to tie my daughter into the car with (last time I rent a car with a car seat and don't bring my own). Also, we were not really warned about pot holes but there are plenty which caused us to get a flat tire, and our spare was flat so we had to drive on the rim to the hotel. However after several phone calls they did come to our hotel and change the tire the next day and we were only charged $50 for the tire (and that might have even been for not filling up with gas). Just beware of the potholes and bring your own carseat and you will be fine.

We went to the grocery store in barber - about 10 miles from the hotel - and they had a good selection.

Also you should know that there is rush hour traffic that you will hit going to the airport, and the airport will not check you in for your flight if there is less than one hour until the departure time. So, leave early!

Room Tip: room 104 or higher, ocean view suite is the way to go!

“A great vacation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

My husband and I stayed at Kura Hulanda for a week. Our room was cozy and well maintained. We received excellent service from the maids, though often our rooms were cleaned late in the day. The food was good and the menu offered plenty of options. The food service is not as fast as in many U.S. restaurants and I don't anticipate that that will change. This did not bother us as we enjoyed being with our friends as well as the beautiful surroundings. Each staff member we dealt with was friendly and helpful. The snorkeling off the hotel beach is terrific. The grounds are lovely and the views are memorable.

“Crime is increasing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2013

Showed up at dive shop last week to find Hotel had "Armed Robbery" the previous evening, Main hotel safe emptied of Money, Jewelry and Passports, including not only Hotel Assets, but guest property located in Main Safe... News Wires supressing, fyi - Curacao needs to get a hold of their increasing crime issues or their tourism is going to drop even more than it has.... On a side note, prices have gone up, paid $13 for a hamburger made of some kind of mystery meat, tasted like no beef I've ever eaten, overpriced and 12% tip charged even for to-go orders....

“Paradise in a tropical surrounding”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013

A hidden gem in Westpunt, Curacao, on the other side of the island from the capital Willemstadt. Gives you a tropical experience in stunning surroundings with botanical gardens, turquose sea and charming lodges. The garden lodges have cosy interiors and offers a private terrace, and the seaside suites are just astonnishing with garden showers and breathtaking views over the caribbean sea. Very comfortable in all ways.
Nice pool area with a pool bar and possibilities for massages, and a great beach with beachrestaurant offers delicious lunches and barbeque parties in the evenings. Professional scubadiving lessons are provided at the hotel beach, with great and affeciant instructors.
Breakfast was nice and was served on a terrace with a view over the ocean.
Very welcoming and professional and kind staff.
Make sure you have a rental car in case you live at the Kura Hulanda in Westpunt, otherwise You will be very offside, and i don't think there is actually any local connections to the capital and the other side of the island. But it's very easy to drive in Curacao, the roads are in good condition and the traffic is calm. This is also the best way to enjoy the stunning sights of Curacao.
Kura Hulanda was a unique and luxurious experience. At least for a person from the freezing Scandinavia.
