This atrocious hotel actually had nice rooms on the upper floors facing the canal and is located far away from everything on the western end of the Varadero strip. It is billed as a 3 and a half star- although our room and washroom was o.k.- we could not open our balcony door as it was heavy and stuck. The beach was filthy with broken glass, cigarettes and pop and beer cans every where. The guy that was in charge of cleaning the beach for the hotel tried to sell us a massage for some ridiculous amount of CUC! He certainly wasn't cleaning the beach. The sand was rocky and pebbly, not soft as further down the beach.
The food at this hotel was beyond disgusting, with birds pecking, hopping and pooing on the food at the buffet and on the tables, while staff seemed to be in a state of wilful blindness. No meal was fit to be eaten! Apart from that if you don't eat pork, you are out of luck at this sad hotel.
Public areas were filthy: garbage everywhere, rain water dripping into the lobby and the rooms, dangerously exposed wiring and drunken guests masturbating in the pool in broad daylight while staff and other guests looked on! Needless to say, we never went in...
This disgusting hotel should be condemned for multiple health and safety violations and closed down.
Safety and security at this hotel are a nightmare as one of us was assaulted by a Cuban guest who tried to hit on her. He burned her with a cigarette in full view of staff and other guests in the late afternoon. Neither the guest nor the official representatives of the hotel assisted with medical attention or legal recourse. In fact, the guest appeared to be friends with the PR official of the hotel. We were denied the right to speak to the hotel manager, call the police, or have immediate medical attention without paying 200 cuc. Our holiday was ruined and one of us was in a lot of pain. We were shocked at the sexist and homophobic attitude of such a key employeee in customer relations.
We were unable to telephone out of our room after this incident as our wanting to call the police was denied at the reception and they disconnected our room phone.
Noel the lobby bar-tender and the nurses on site were quite kind.
However, staff at the reception desk and the Public Relations rep., Maikel Gonzalez, are some of the most ill-mannered, uncaring and homophobic people we have encountered ! That is certainly a distinction for this hotel in a country that prides itself on human rights and on support for LGBT persons.
