Having spent 4 nights at the Nacional de cuba in Havana and surviving on the dog food in Havana, it was like walking into a 5 star Restaurant. Mind you, i would have rated Mcdonalds a 3 star Restaurant after Havana.
Keeping things in prospective - The food was great by Cuban standards, baring in mind i starved for 4 days in Havana !
The Beach - Lovely white powder sand ..... You can walk way out into the sea before you are out of your depth, a bit choppy some days and there were times when the red flags wer out.
Never walked into the sea, for the water to eventually get up to may waste, then almost walk out of it ! My only fault if i was to be picky with the beach is that it lacked the charm of coves and Coconut palms
The staff - Super friendly, best i've encounted anywhere. Not superficial and certainly not looking for tips. Cuban Hotel workers get paid more than Doctors and so it's hardly suprising that they feel privelaged
The Hotel - Pool side entertainment was a little tacky and a touch on the Benidorm side, tho it was amusing. Not somewhere i'd want to get married, tho i laughed when a wedding was taking place in the Garden and ' My commanding wife ' was being played around the pool !
Great pool, always a lounger somewhere. Great pool bar where you could sit and puff on a Cuban dog rocket !
The downstairs bar could a nice place to chill in the evening, but it got so humid.
Prefered to sit upstairs at the Piano bar, there is an outside area with a cool breeze.
Room kept very clean, happy with the room. Found it best to completely empty the Fridge to get it restocked each day (put the ones you don't drink in the Wardrobe).
We were on Floor 5, dead handy as you didn't need to use the lifts.
People have noted that the lifts are slow, far from it - they just don't get where you want them to and you can often wait along time as there are near on 15 floors, they also get hot as they are a little confined.
I would visit the Nacional de Cuba again in a shot, it's an institution, so much history and faded glamour, certainly wouldn't visit for the food !
Much as i liked the Blau, i missed the culture. Varadero is a purpose tourist resort, you wouldn't know you were in Cuba. If you've spent a few days in Havana, you will see where i'm coming from. For this reason, i doubt that i will return to the Blau.
As a Hotel, it's great.
