“Cuba Libre”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2013

Stayed here the first week of November with my daughter and two friends. Had a great time as the employees were all great. Especially, Maykal, Zualy and Maria Victoria in the Lobby Bar. Tomas and Alexander were great on the entertainment crew;. From the first night, we were treated as their best friends.

Being rainy season, one of the pools was closed, but one was open with no one going there, so we had a really great pool all to ourselves. The bar was closed at that pool, but who cares, it was great having it to ourselves. Not all of the restaurants were open, but the food was good in the others. After mentioning to the chef that we wanted "Pasta alli olio" the night before, he tracked down the ingredients so we could have it the next night. That's what I call service.

We made private trips in to Varadero and Havana. We used a private tour guide that we met at the market in Varadero. Hestebal and Toki were excellent guides. All in all a good trip. I'd recommend Cuba to anyone.

We stayed at this hotel at the end of two weeks stay in Cuba. During this period we stayed in various Casa's and two Varadero hotels.
In relation to this hotel the staff were without doubt the best thing about the hotel. They were extremely friendly and warm. A small criticism is that the hotel advertises service included. However, whilst waiting at the bar along with three other customers, someone else approached the bar whom the bar staff obviously knew he was getting a tip from. The barman interrupted serving the person he was dealing with in order to take this man's cup which he brought to the bar to be filled with drinks. I found this extremely rude but other than this staff in other areas were great.
The rooms were nicely decorated, however there was a slight damp smell which we thought was coming from the bedding. However, this was also present at one of the previous hotels we stayed at so I would suggest it may be related to the laundry processes?
We ate in numerous restaurants in Cuba and found the food is fairly bland and not particularly hot. The food here was as good as anywhere.
Personally, the major negative of this hotel for us was the ambiance. There were no air conditioned bars during the day, and the noise in the communal areas could be quite loud with guests shouting to friends across reception and in the dining room.
Overall this hotel was adequate with good points and bad points but personally I would not consider it to be the standard expected of a 5* hotel.

Room Tip: We were initially place in a room with a view onto the building sight opposite. We immediately retu...

id like to start bye saying we booked a wedding package at the blau marina, our group was of 20 people and let me say this resort was absolutely amazing, the 24 hr bars the amazing pools and dining, not one of our guests was wanting for anything,
forget anything you have ever heard about cuban food we have been many times to cuba and the blau marina is exceptional. the staff is 2nd to none the 2km beaches were pristine and perfection. the hotel manager went above and beyond to make sure we had the perfect wedding and we did.
we spent our first week at the Blau and our 2nd at the #1 rated iberostar varadero.. i wish we would have stayed at the Blau.
so to all the staff and management thank you again we will see you every year :)

Stayed in April 2013.

Travelling with my father, his partner at the time, her son and my brother we stayed for six nights after being in Havana for 3.

Upon arrival we discovered that the hotel had a drinking age of 18, even though Cuba itself has no legal restrictions on this. Being as two of us were 17 at the time this was a nuisance as we had enjoyed being able to order drinks and cigars at the bar of our previous hotel in Havana. This problem was easily erased when one of the more light hearted receptionists told us to turn our blue wristbands (showing we were under-age) to reveal a white back (showing we were of age).

The hotel was beautiful and the weather was terrific for April. The only real issue was food and the lack on wi-fi. Obviously as Cuba is still communist the wi-fi issue occurs throughout and by the end of the holiday I was accustomed and unbothered by this. However, the food was very poor for a 5 star hotel and my diet mainly consisted of fruit, which was delicious, and flombeed banana's in rum.

To conclude I would not stay here again, however Havana is a must see for any one looking to visit Cuba!

This is a beautiful resort with the most wonderful friendly committed staff. It is on the northern tip of the Varadero peninsula so it can be quite windy at times. The resort is well kept and they try to fix problems promptly.
The food was better than we expected because it is not just the usual buffet; they have cooks grilling you fresh beef, chicken and fish. They will make pasta to you order with a variety of fresh ingredients. Fresh pizzas with a variety of choices. The fruit and vegetable vary based on what's available. The a la carte restaurants especially the Italian were fairly good. I would have liked to have lobster but none available at that time
About the concerns around construction. We were on the side right next to it and didn't hear a thing. The rooms are fairly sound proof so you only hear noise in the hallway
Tips: get you mini bar completely refilled everyday by throwing in a peso
Intermittently tipping bar a wait staff gets much better and person service. 1 peso every now and then is plenty
Friday afternoon they make a roast pig for pork on a bun. Delicious. Also burgers and hotdogs in the poolside restaurant if you want a change
To bypass all lines and hassle plus stay in an air conditioned room with included drinks and snacks while awaiting your departure at the airport purchase the VIP pass for 30 pesos. We were also upgrade to the best seats on the way back which was a $30 value
You will be warned not to buy cigars off the street. Well chose carefully but if you know your cigars. Many Cubans have family working at the cigar factories and get free cigars way more than they can smoke. They the. Resell these to tourist so they are the real deal but at a fraction of the price. In Varadero I bought Cohibas for about 12 pesos a five pack I found them to be the real deal, compared to 60 in the store or more. If you just want to buy them at a store find a smaller store or market in Varadero and you will pay far less than the hotel or airport or that ripoff store in Havana
