We stayed at the Iberostar Varadero for ten nights at the end of January 07. We thought the facilities that the hotel offered were great and that it compared well to other all inclusive resorts we have stayed at in Jamaica & Mexico.
Food - the buffet is of a good quality and they do make an effort to vary the offering from day to day, though breakfast and lunch are a bit more repetitive. There are a lot of flies around at the poolside buffet (where lunch and late breakfast are served) as other reviewers have mentioned - they could do with some more covers or a better way of protecting the food. We tried all three a la carte restaurants (& didn't experience any problems in getting reservations) - the most disappointing was the Cuban restaurant - food was fine but just not very exciting. The Japanese restaurant is good fun, and the Mediterranean was tasty and offered a nice change ftom the buffet with steak & fish cooked to order.
Rooms - we were intially allocated a room with twin 'double' beds, but we asked to change after one night, as the bed was just too small, and reception was happy to oblige. We were moved to a double room, and the bed was double the size. The rooms are very spacious, each with a balcony and a good sized bathroom. There's also a fridge with soft drinks and beer that is topped up daily and a coffee machine.
Beach & pool - the beach is lovely though slightly on the windy side. The main pool is very large, and never gets very busy, plus there is a pool bar and jacuzzi, but the water is slightly on the chilly side! There is also a small kiddies pool, a sports pool, and a further pool near the spa.
Entertainment - the day time entertainment facilities are good, with aqua aerobics, bingo, shooting, archery, bowls, dancing, aerobics etc run on a daily basis. We did struggle a bit to entertain ourselves in the evenings (but I think this is a common issue with all inclusive resorts) - the evening show starts at 9.30 and was OK - shows like Chicago & the gymnasts shows were very good but others were a bit repetitive. There are three PC's for surfing the internet, but you have to pay (10 CUC's for an hour - about £6), and there are two pool tables that are free to use (but the cues are a bit dodgy!).
Other facilities - we made use of the tennis court (you can borrow racquets and balls at no cost) which was in good condition, and had a look at the gym facilities, which are limited but probably sufficient. You will usually need to book the tennis court a day in advance.
Cuba - be prepared for a two/two and a half hour journey from Havana airport to the hotel. On the plus side you do get to see quite a bit of the countryside and get a feel for the country. We also did a day trip to Havana - it was interesting, but there isn't a huge amount to see there. We went to see the evening Tropicana show which was fantastic, but if you see it after the Havana tour, its quite a long day!
Money & tipping - American dollars and travellers cheques originating from American banks WON'T be accepted. We took £ sterling and Euro's cash and that was fine. I also tracked down non-American Express travellers cheques issued by a UK bank as a back up (Barclay's sell them). Tips of 2-3 CUC's for good service is about right - the average wage is around 300 CUC's a month.
All in all we had a great time - I'd definitely recommend the hotel for other couples, its a very relaxing location. If you travel from the UK go for more than a week, as it does pretty much take a day of travelling each way - 10 days is about right.
