Having enjoyed three nights in Havana, the Iberostar Varadero was the chosen resort for our group's ( 6 friends ) remaining 11 nights of our holiday and again, it proved to be a great, great choice. I had emailed Pilar Perciavalle in advance, requesting three rooms in Blocks 13 or 14, knowing them to be located away from the main hotel areas and closer to the beach --- we were kindly obliged. The complex itself is beautiful, with three storey blocks located within sculptured and very well maintained gardens and offering some great dining options, together with a very good entertainment programme.
Rooms : Were very spacious, clean and maintained to a very high standard. Our maid Dianelys surprised us every day with different towel sculptures and curtian arrangements. My only complaint would be that television signal reception was inconsistent.
Dining : The main Ambrosio restaurant provided excellent daily buffet options for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Each day offered a different "theme" and you would be hard pressed to not find something that set your taste buds alight. Again, the service afforded by the staff was exceptional and very attentive. We tended to occupy the same table most days and were really looked after by Suesette / Maydellis / George and Yaima , who are a real credit to their employers and very worthy of our sincere thanks.
During our stay, we also sampled the three a la carte options -- Manzoku ( Japanese ) / La Dorada ( Mediterranean ) and La Parrilla ( International ) ---- with La Parrilla winning our vote for the most spacious / relaxing dining experience of the three.
Entertainment : The Star Friends Team at the hotel work extremely hard all day to keep guests engaged, if they wish to be involved, offering many different sport and game options throughout the day. Each night , different "themed" shows were put on in the La Rumba Theatre ---- the dancers, it has to be observed, are superb at what they do, with never ending costume changes, but it can get a little repetative on occasions. During one night of our stay, we were treated to a short spot by a canadian singer / recording artiste - Hal Bruce, who was SUPERB and would have clearly "held" his audience for a full show --- maybe something to be noted by the management team ?
Beach : A lady suggested to my wife and I that our first word as we walked onto Varadero beach would be "WOW" --- how right she was -- it is simply stunning, and HAS to be one of the best in the world. The hotel, in my view, sits in the prime location as well, with endless white sand in either direction. Our chosen daily spot, saw us located adjacent to the point where couples exchanged their marraige vows and we managed to bear witness a steady stream during our stay. The beach bar staff always ensured that refreshing drinks were on hand -- to be topped off with rum if you wished ( well -- it would be rude to say no thanks ). It was also intriguing to watch the fishing skills of a group of Pelicans who patrolled the beach front on a daily basis -- they would fly efforflessly along the shallow waters, then dive with stunning precision to claim their quarry.
The Lobby Bar: The venue for a cooling drink, prior to getting ready for dinner, the lobby bar opffered an extensive choice of cocktails, most of which we managed to try during our stay ( once again, it would be rude not to ) . The service again was exteptional and we woud like to extend our thanks to ou " main men" Marcelo and Adriano for looking after us so well.
We would certainly recommend this resort to anyone seeking a place to stay in Varadero -- we will not hesitate should we choose to return to Cuba in the future.
