“Great Vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2012

We stayed at the iberostar from Nov. 9 - 23. We have stayed at 6 other resorts in Cuba and the Iberostar Varadero is the best resort that we visited in Cuba. The food is good, the service is excelent throughout the resort. This resort has the best plumbing in Cuba.
We will back next year.

Just back from 7 days at this lovely hotel! This was our first time at an all inclusive and wasn't sure what to expect....so here are my comments!

The hotel definitely has the best setting of all the hotels within walking distance, the grounds are beautiful and the gardeners are constantly pruning, watering and tidying up to leave a wonderful area to walk about in.

The beach was very accessible, plenty of sand so don't worry and an abundance of sun beds available. Yes the pools were on the cool side initially, but once in they were fine! Sun beds do tend to get booked by 'towels' by the pool. My favourite pool was the 'quiet' one, less sun beds and no loud music, although to be fair that was only usually when there were games by the large pool going on.

Accommodation was as described in the brochure, standard room (1521) on the first floor, had a peaceful view over the gardens. Good to have a coffee machine, iron and hairdryer, although the mini bar only had beer, sparkling water and soft fizzy drinks, no wine....

Work going on at present building a new pool behind block 16, so a room there may be a problem until it is finished.

The entertainment staff get 10 out of 10 for trying to put on a variety of shows and if its your thing I'm sure you will enjoy it, but for me personally it was a reminder of butlins or such like as a kid!

The staff at the hotel cannot be faulted for trying to please and 99% of them always had a smile on their face, no matter what you asked of them. We didn't do any excursions except for going out on the hobicat at the beach to go snorkelling at a small reef, worth the 20 cuc's each that it cost.

The biggest disappointment was the food, for some reason it was never hot, always lukewarm, and rather bland, but this is Cuba and it appears to be the norm. The only exception to this was the Japanese restaurant where the food was cooked in front of you.

So, all in all, had a great time and ended up being selective with the food (lots of salad) and accepting it was not going to get better and learning to live with it!

Room Tip: Work going on at present building a new pool behind block 16, so a room there may be a problem until...

Lovely hotel. Not five star but a good four. Food nice but a bit too salty for me but always plenty of choice. The staff were very friendly.Rooms very good and I've no complaints. We could always get a sunbed as long as we were up by 9am. It's all been said before, so go and I'm sure you will enjoy it

Room Tip: All rooms are good as far as we could tell.

My family & I traveled for a wedding last week and were greeted by a staff of friendlly smiles. Drinks were served to us while we waited for our check-in. Iberostar did not disappoint. Stayed at another hotel last year and by far this exceeds any expectation. The food was very good and so were the a la carte restaurants. Only things I would like to recommend some food should be placed under ice to keep cool for example, some seafood platters, cheeses and coldcuts other than that the food was amazing.

A lot of people from our group suggested the pool should have been heated as it was to cold to enjoy, however the jaccuzzi (yaccuzzi) was the best.

I would recommend this hotel and would love to stay again in the future

Travelled to the Iberostar for a wedding. Loved the resort. Pools were gorgeous and sparkling clean. Beach was breathtaking. Weather was cool and windy - however that is certainly not the fault of the resort. Staff were friendly and our room was kept immaculate.
Enjoyed excursions to Varadero and Havana - lots of taxis waiting at the resort to take you anywhere...very reasonably priced.
Lots of choices at the buffet and we had no problems finding plenty to eat with a nice variety of foods. The cocktails flowed freely - all in all - a great family holiday.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012

We stayed at the Iberostar Veradero for 6 nights after staying at the Iberostar Parque Central in Havana for 3 nights. Both hotels are rated “5 stars” . The Iberostar Veradero was a huge disappointment compared to Iberostar in Havana (I reviewed it separately). The Iberostar Veradero is a nice beach hotel, but there is nothing 5 star about this place.

The biggest complaint is the food which is mediocre at best to sometimes just terrible! We have stayed at many 5 star all-inclusive resorts where the a-la-carte restaurants are usually the preferred restaurants with superior food. The 3 specialty restaurants at the Iberostar are worse than the main buffet restaurant.

Mediterranean Restaurant – ordered surf-n-turf with the steak medium rare. The steak was well done, tough and the lobster was also overcooked and dry. Too much salt in the soup!

International Restaurant – really disappointing across the board. Again, too much salt in the soup.

Japanese Restaurant – this was unacceptable. Improper food handling – one set of tongs used for cooking and serving the chicken, beef, shrimp and octopus. Tongs were used with raw food, then to cook, then more raw food, etc. Then everything was ruined by the excessive amounts of “soya sauce” that just smothered everything. Also, this is not real soya Sauce, it’s too thick for soya sauce and is more like a “Maggi Sauce” – what a shame. Salt – they put copious amounts of salt on everything to the point of excess.

Main Buffet – Unless you managed to get your meat, chicken, fish etc. right off the grill, you will end up with overcooked food. They consistently overcook the food, then keep it is serving dishes that must be too hot which just makes it worse. And then there is the excess use of salt. If food had a sauce or gravy, it was always too salty. I enjoy salt, but the amount of salt used is just ridiculous. Salad bar became boring very quickly. And why on earth are there 10 or 15 different platters of mussels / mussel salads? Bacon at breakfast - the bacon is almost raw and looks like it was cooked for 15 seconds - yuk.

BEACH – the beach is OK, but I would not place this beach on any top 10 list. Bar Service at the beach was usually self-serve. Bar staff never came along the beach more than twice each day.

Hotel Property – overall the buildings, gardens and general atmosphere is very nice.

Rooms – rooms are spacious and very nice, but clearly not 5 star quality.

Bottom Line – this hotel is grossly over-rated and I would NOT stay here again, or recommend it to anyone.

Dear PuraVidaReviewer, Thank you for your review, we regreat to hear that your experience with us was not as expected. I will forward your suggestions and points of view to our Executive chef in regards to the A la carte Restaurants, specially about our Japanese restaurant. In regards to the Mediterranean as I always encourage our guests if they request an specific term on the food and is not what you requested once it get to the table, even if this is an all inclusive hotel, you have the option to ask the waiter or cooks to change the dish, as in any other restaurant you may visit, they will be happy to correct the mistake and to have the possibility to improve. Our Bacon is served in the breakfast buffet in hot platers, and in front of that area you will find a cook preparing omelletts and eggs, he is also available to any other request, like cooking the bacon to your taste (more crispy), in a hotel with an average per day of 700 guests, we need to be able to please every taste, some guests like bacon more crispy than others, that is why is served in a medium term with the option to request to the cook to cook it to your taste. We truly wish you are able to enjoy your next vacation to the fullest. Once again we appreciate your comments and suggestions. Best regards from Varadero. Quality Manager Cuba
