“okay resort - better management needed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2014

This was my 4th time to Cuba so I think I have a fairly good idea of what I was expecting. I knew when booking this resort it was a 3.5 star. I was traveling with my sister and were are both in our twenties. That being said i'll start with the good.

Room- Cleaned well, no smell, great view of the ocean and quite large. Room 4323.
There was a bar in a building 4 which was very convenient.
Beach- was beautiful but it is beautiful every where in varadero. It was across the street but was no big deal to us.
Pools- Large and had music playing in the afternoon. We would play volleyball and drink at the swim up bar. There is a quieter pool for people who want to relax.
Food- Average for varadero. So basically not that good but being to cuba before we expected that.
Location- for a two gals in their twenties the location was great. We met a lot of great people and went to the Markets, bars and restaurants. Calle 62 and Havana Club were right beside us and we went out every night. We always felt safe and danced the nights away!

Now for the bad.
The hotel service is awful. Other than the maids and a few amazing waiters the staff is USELESS. The front desk people do nothing and are the laziest people I have ever met. They dont answer any questions and ignore you. We did not have beach towels for 4 days of our 7 day trip because they said it was broken. But did not go out of their way to provide us with other towels and no one cared. One day on the beach i got stung by a bee and had an allergic reaction and needed to call my insurance and they told me they had no phones that called out of cuba. Actually none of the phones on the resort worked and our cell phones didnt work either. Its a shame because the set up of the resort and the location is amazing but they need to have a new manager who will shape up the place and run it properly. Also we did not eat at any of the restaurants on the resorts because apparently the lady was never there to do so.. go figure.

If you are low maintenance, like to have a good time (party) and get a good deal then go but if you have small children and want luxury -- go somewhere like Iberostar Laguna Azul.. which i think is the best in varadero,

It was our first time in Cuba and was a bit afraid because of the bad comments on this hotel.
We arrived around 7 in the evening. The lady at the check-in was nice and friendly. We could basically chose our room wherever we wanted! Plus she said in case there is any problem, we should just come back and she gives us another one!

The room was nice (simple but clean, just as on the photos), on the second floor, second building, poolside.
And surprisingly: we had a safe in the room!
The room got cleaned everyday correctly (however do not leave your half smoked cigars around because they get thrown away...).

The food is ok. To be honest I don't really eat meat so for me the lots of differently prepared vegetables where just fine! After a week it does get a bit boring though...
The problem of this restaurant is that they are very understaffed! If you don't arrive early, you will not find a clean table and have to wait quite a lot to get it done and to get clean cutlery.

The most popular à la carte restaurant is the Italian one, however we decided always to eat outside the hotel. (We tried and suggest: Dante- Josone Park, Salsa Suarez, Don Alex, The Beatles Bar-even to eat snacks!!!)

As everybody writes, the pools are crystal clean, the beach is close and AMAZING! The staff is friendly, especially our favourite Maybert at the public relations!!!

The hotel is close to everything you should see in Varadero!

Overally, this hotel is a good one for your money! Don't expect glam and the 4* you got used to at home, but it's clean, close to what you want to see, the people are friendly and there is live salsa everyday!
Just take it as it is and relax because you are on holiday!

And anyway: "This is Cuba!" :)

The common areas are nicer than the rooms, but the room we had was OK. The location was GOLD, with nightlife and good restaurants, Parc Josone, markets, Museo (alas seemingly perpetually closed) close by. The stretch of beach near the hotel is phenomenal, endlessly walkable. The food was just fine, we never had a totally disappointing meal. Pools are fine. Gym is useable, if a little toasty. There are things you would improve on if you had your druthers: beer and wine available at all bars, beach towels cleaned more often, a fresh pasta bar, etc. But for what you pay, the Palma Real is an excellent choice. Some of the negative reviews here are the exceptional bad situations that a few people face whenever you put a thousand humans from around the planet together in one place. Most of the other negative reviews are from people who have either never travelled in this area of the world, have generally unrealistic expectations, or are just plain stupid. And you know what they say, "you can't fix stupid".

This was my first time out of Ontario and after reading many poor reviews we didn't have very high expectations. The check in process was slow, as there were only 2 receptionists for all of us and they seemed to be jumping around and not very organized. We did have a place to store our luggage while we waited for our room. Our room was in the farthest building from the lobby, building four. This was annoying to walk back and forth all of the time but it was quiet and we actually didn't mind it. We had nothing for a view but did have a nice breeze that came in and it was quiet. Our room was clean. We did have an issue that the trim on the door was off and the lock was attached to the trim... For whatever reason. We brought it up to our rep and they had it "fixed" in a couple of hours.

There was also an issue with the water and it stopped working a couple of times throughout the trip, usually for an hour or so. The one day it was not working for around 4 hours. We went to the front desk and reception quickly offered us a key to a room in the first building to shower. We were impressed at how easy this was.

The food was not good. It was edible but it was repetitive and for a picky eater like myself, it just was not cutting it. They also didn't change the table cloth or wipe it after people ate at them... This was strange. The snack bar had decent hamburgers that we ate for a lunch a couple days. I would recommend going off the resort to the La Fondue, and the steakhouse, both very close. They were a reasonable price and very good!

Bellevue Palma Real is nothing spectacular but you get what you pay for. If you want a 5 star resort then go to one. It's a good place to go on a budget. The location is perfect for someone wanting to easily go into town and the beach is a short walk away. We had no issues and walked downtown Varadero every day. The pools are also nice and weren't too busy when we were there.

The staff were friendly for the most part and Louis in the kitchen is one we will always remember! There were some shows at night and we saw a really cool dancing show in the pool the one night. Book your a la cartes the first day!! We missed out on ours.

As for drinks, they were pretty good, I couldn't believe how strong they mix them. Can't complain! The bartenders were efficient and friendly, regardless of whether you left a tip or not. We usually didn't. We left the maids a gift or two from the dollar store each day and our towels were made into hearts or swans. The one day we didn't leave anything, we were left with no towels... lol. However, we called down to reception and were brought some shortly after!

Some people are very difficult to please but if you're easy going and not set on a 5 star holiday, then Palma Real would be suitable. We paid $680 and this was reasonable, I probably wouldn't recommend paying much more. Overall the resort was kept clean and they are constantly working on renovating it.

Room Tip: Get a room in the 1st building.

We had a great time with our grown kids... Loved being right in town, beach is stunning, the staff is great...Jesus at the beach bar taught me some Spanish, Denise in the dining room is fun....overall, amazing! Only things that the hotel really needs to address is having enough locks for all the room safes and cleaning the beach each morning/having enough garbage cans ...other than that, we would definitely go back...good value for the $$

After spending two weeks at the Palma Real, this is what I have discovered.
There are those people that you will meet in life that are never satisfied no matter where they travel. Nothing will ever make them happy. So sad really.
We in fact met one such person at the end or our vacation and at the middle of his.
Food was the worst ever, resort was in shambles, service was nothing less that deplorable.
STAY HOME BUDDY!
The Palma Real, like any place on the planet, is what you make of it.
My wife and I had the best vacation in 25 years this year.
It is affordable, is in the best location in Veradero and has a staff that will cater to you in every way.
The food was better than expected and is actually quite good with a great variety. We will be bringing our grown children here next year and two are both lactose and wheat intolerant. There is lots of food they could eat.
The resort is always clean. The rooms are larger than most North American hotels.
The pools are plentiful and again, are clean.
The small section of private beach which of course is only a short walk is very nice.
Because of it’s location and price, it is easy to walk in town and not feel trapped like the more expensive resorts further down the strip.
The best part of the resort is the staff of course.
Meybert is the resorts customer service representative. Actually she is really an angel but works at the front desk area. She advised us on everything on the first day that really made our holiday what it was.
The resort is so lucky to have her and we heard this from almost everyone we met too.
The cleaning staff and the waiters and waitress’s are hard and dedicated workers and will make every effort to make your stay enjoyable.
This is a 3 star rated resort with five star staff.
It is a showing it’s age for sure, but if you travel outside the area as we did, you will realize that Cuba is trying to rebuild itself after many years of just trying to survive the U.S. blockade.
We snorkelled, watched baseball at it’s best, ate at palladores in small towns, sampled the environment and had the best possible time ever.
This is the safest country to travel in that we ever have been in the world.
I can’t say enough of the Cuban people.
The only negative about the whole two weeks that we encountered is that you should, if you can, stay away from the tour operators. Westjet, Cubanatur, Sunwest and all the rest, charge about double for a bus trip with 50 of your best and not so best friends to see sights that can be accessed buy a licensed and insured state taxi.
As an example, for $80.00 CUC you can use a tour company to arrange a cab to take you to Coral Beach for snorkelling. It is 28 kms from the hotel towards Matanzas. Or your can arrange your own cab for $40.00.
In closing, take all the negative comments about this and other resorts with a grain of salt. There are complainers everywhere.
Pack smart. Your carry-on should have a change of clothing so you can enjoy yourself because like most resorts, your room will not be available until 16:00 on you arrival day.
Bring flashlights and extra toiletries because once you step off the resort...it's CUBA.
We had a blast at Palma Real and Cuba is a paradise not to be missed.
We will be back here for sure.
This is a resort that will entertain you or let you relax in piece and quiet.
It will not stand in your way to enjoy what ever you need.

Room Tip: Any room facing North is a good choice from any of the buildings. South on building 3 and four face...

Just got back last night after 11 nights at Palma Real,so thought I would share our experience while still fresh.

First off I should mention that we travel several times a year and the last 6 years or so have been mostly non all-inclusive.

We went in with an open mind and fully aware of the pros and cons to AI, but the price was so cheap that we couldn't afford to stay home.

Check in was a breeze at around 3PM, room was ready. Nice room in building 4 , 4th floor, Bay View.Everything in the room worked. Freshly painted, good bed and chairs, lots of hot/cold water, After a few days of speaking with other couples, we soon learned we got real lucky. Many were tired of switching rooms just to find one with everything working. The Palma Real room Gods smiled upon us for the first 6 days, until the great water drought of Building Four.

The Great Water Drought of Building Four lasted for 2 days, but intermittent, and the Drought seemed to be able to sense when you needed to flush the toilet , or take a shower. At times there was either hot or cold water, but not both. We took the hot water and poured it into the toilet to make it flush. We got through the Drought and kept our room while many others chose the futile path of changing rooms.

The hotel property is dated but clean. The pool loungers are in great shape(if not brand new). The pools are impeccably clean. The lobby area is constantly cleaned, as are the public area washrooms. My best description in one word for the Lobby Area would be .... Adequate.

The beach area I will leave to other reviewers, because sand fleas think my wife is fine dining at its best, so we are pool people.. The beach bar is small and serves hot dogs and hamburgers on a slice of bread, not buns. The beach bar restroom facilities are less than adequate. I attribute this to the many non-hotel guests using the facilities and lack of security. The bar staff have no line of sight to the restrooms, so it's somewhat "Open to the Public".

The BARS, a stark reminder of the #1 reason, we stopped going to All Inclusive for so long. With the exception of a couple of bartenders, ordering a drink was an extremely rude intrusion of their lives. As an example.... there were about 30 customers lined up at the bar, with 3 bartenders, 2 minutes later, only 1 bartender. Customers holding pesos in their hands vying for the attention of this solo bartender. As soon as the line up paid their fees, the other 2 bartenders would show up again. This was repeated daily.

I personally did not partake in the "Tip to get Service" routine. I subscribe to the "Tip for Great Service" motto. Most of our drinks were enjoyed off the resort, where a tip was earned and not extorted.

The food at the Palma Real was actually not bad, and contrary to what some reviews have said , the steam tables were working at optimum temperature (don't ask, just trust me, they are at optimal temps). The problem with their system is the serving area is too far away from the prep area. The food comes in on trays that get cold and are expected to be warmed by the steam tables. If the trays came in hot, the steam tables would keep it that way. End result is, only the last dregs of the pan will be hot.

On one day, the inspectors were in and we saw knives and forks and glasses at every table. We even had a carved ham for the first and only time at breakfast. It was not to be seen again. The tables were cleared and reset in the blink of an eye. There were 5 bartenders at every bar and even table service from the bar servers. The other ten days were a struggle to get a knife or glass or spoon or anything for that matter.

Now I am contused about the white glove service and great food on the day of the inspectors visit.

We booked this hotel for proximity to Varadero town, and nothing else. We would have stayed longer if it were not all inclusive.

If you go with an open mind you will do well here, just get out and explore on foot and use this hotel as a base camp.

Room Tip: Room preferences will be ignored, so save your efforts
