“1st Time To Cuba”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2014

My fiancé and I wanted to go on an all inclusive vacation to Cuba. We have only been to Mexico and wanted to try something new. The resort, staff, food, people were all amazing.I know you are on vacation but if you want to eat dinner at one of the 4 restaurants you must book a reservation unless it is the 24 hour bistro, buffet or the grill at lunch by the beach or pool. Do it ASAP to ensure you get a reservation at one the 4 restaurants. You can only dine at each restaurant once during an 8 day stay except for the buffet and bistro. I find it easier to keep track of time while getting ready if you have a clock in the room. We did not have a clock in our room. If you book an outing or decide to have a nap you can call for a wake up call. The room did have hair dryers but not what you would expect. I have attached a picture for you to view. I would suggest you bring your own. The water pressure for the bathroom sink was good but the shower varied. We had a king size bed and mattress. It was not 2 twins pushed together. There was a vinyl cover the mattress with a flat sheet over top. In the evening sometimes I would find the sheet cool due to vinyl cover under and the humidity but I found a blanket in the closet and put it under the sheet. That seemed to solve the problem. We had an older safe we had to ask the front desk for the lock and key. Make sure you return it or there will be $50.00 charge. The TV in our room was a 120 voltage so we used our electrical converter. I'm sure if we of called they would of brought us one, but we were not using it for anything so we just used our own. The buffet is awesome. No need to bring your own ketchup mustard, relish or salt and pepper. They do have salad dressing but it is Cuban style if you want ranch, ceaser or something like that you might want to bring your own. They have a Poutine bar at lunch which is amazing. We ate at the El Calibre, Las Morales. Both Restaurants were excellent as far as food and service goes. Our last night there my fiancé arranged for a dinner in the sand on the beach which was incredible. We had our own waiter and watched the sun set on our last night. There were candles in the sand around the table. We missed our reservations at the Italian restaurant, due too much fun at the pool bar. My suggestion if you want to eat at all four restaurants do your reservations as soon as possible. If you have dinner at the beach grill try for around 7:30pm you will get to watch the sun set while you have dinner. The resort is mostly Canadians and I would say the average age is mid 30's and up. If you are looking to be wild this resort is not for you. The evening shows were spectacular. My 2 favorite was Triller (That is how it was spelt on stage) and the Rock and Roll Show. If you want a coffee maker you must request one from the front reception. There is No ATM machine so if you want money you have to go in to Varadero to the bank. If you need to go to the bank you have to bring your passport with you. The front desk can exchange Canadian dollars to Cuban dollars (CUC). Don't take out too much money because soon everyone will be on one currency. Everywhere in Cuba only excepts Canadian Credit Cards, for example TD Visa (If you have a credit card through an American based bank they will not except it.) If you do decide to go in to Varadero you can take the double decker bus for $5.00 and get off and on as much as you want for that day. You catch the bus on the main highway just outside the resort. Ladies if you decide to venture into Varadero take the package of tissue they leave you in the hotel bathroom. There will be someone standing at the washroom door with a tip cup and giving you tissue to use for the washroom when you are in Varadero or anywhere else in Cuba. Outside the resort you will also notice there is no toilet seats. The toilet bowl is clean but there is no seat. In the mini mall on the resort you will find 24 hour Bistro, Grocery Store, Cigar & Coffee Store, Salon, Pharmacy, 2 Souvenir Stores, The Italian Restaurant, Pool Tables. We found the coffee on the resort to be the same price at the mall just outside of Varadero. There is another very nice souvenir store on the resort between the main pool and beach. The staff on the resort were excellent. The rooms were cleaned daily before 5:00pm and I always had towel animals made in my bed or in the bathroom. There was always landscapers out working hard manicuring the grounds all day long. The Entertainment staff was also great and outgoing. The bartenders at every bar from the pool, night club and main lobby bar were awesome. They were so good and entertaining we missed our Italian Dinner reservations not because we were too drunk it was because we were having fun socializing. In the beginning of May 2014 the resort will be taken over by the Royalton. The resort will be getting some upgrades and will stay an adult only resort. If you fly Sunwing and go to the morning orientation you will have the option to do the V.I.P at the airport which I suggest if you are flying from west side of Canada and doing the red Eye Flight. It costs $30.00 Pesos per person. You also have the option to do a late check out if the room is available. If you have to check out by noon no worries there showers and a place to store your luggage. You will have to ask the front desk for a towel. You can still watch the shows and enjoy the food on the resort while you wait for the bus to pick you up to take you to the airport. Our bus did not come until 11:15pm because our flight was not until 3:00am. If you decide to do a tour, I highly recommend the Jeep Safari. They are standard Jeeps and you will need your Canadian license to drive. We had a fantastic time and would go back again in a heart beat.

Room Tip: Our room was room #2002. We were on the ground level. Our room was located across from the Spa, Gym...

Dear guests:

That has to be the most exhaustive review we have received so far! Thank you for the details! Our future guests will certainly know what to expect!!

It is wonderful to read that you would come back again in a heartbeat! We are proud that we were able to make your first visit to Cuba memorable! And yes, we do have poutine! Just another little perk of our new management! As you mentioned this beautiful diamond will become part of the Royalton family and follow its sister hotel Royalton Cayo Santa Maria as the second in Cuba. The hairdryers in the room are part of the upgrade and renovations , as well as many other details.

We do not know how to thank you for your generous comments dear guests. We are certain that our future guests will enjoy as much as we have!

We look forward to welcoming you again to Royal Hicacos, your diamond in the sun!

We returned to Royal Hicacos for our 4th visit. It is just as amazing as the first time, if not better! The grounds are being kept up very nicely. The Beach is beautiful, as usual! While we were there, we witnessed a clean up day, everyone from the managers in suits, to the maids, filling their aprons, to the bartenders were picking up garbage, rocks and coral, and they did it quite quickly! We have always loved everything about the resort, but it seemed even better this time! The food was AMAZING! It was always good, however it was even better this time! Fresh grilled steak, chicken, beef kabobs, pork kabobs and hamburgers every day, just how you like it, and a Poutine station! The WI-Fi worked great while I was there, one reviewer was complaining that their WI-fi card never worked, they had to keep buying a new one....when they give you the card, they give you instructions, you must read these and follow the DISCONNECTING instructions, if not, your minutes will tick away. As usual the staff were amazing! WE were so glad to see all the familiar faces, and I hope the new management realizes that they have the best on the Varadero Strip, and try to hold on to them all, they are truly special! Management is very upfront and center making sure they were visible, there was always a manager in the restaurant watching everything, and was very strict, if he saw something he didn't like it was corrected immediately! The rooms were very well kept and clean! We had no issues with our bed. The staff is going around every day surveying people to see what they think of the resort. Management wants to know what the guests think, they want the good and the bad so they can ensure they are fixing and problems and continuing what is good! My only problem is smoking in the Show area, as it is close knit, and I had a sore throat when I left from the smoke around me. The Lobby Bar is now Smoke Free which is very nice! Overall it is a great resort, I can't wait to see what is to come, and I can't wait to return, We will be back!!

Dear repeat guests:

Thank you for your confidence! It warms our heart to read your beautiful comments!

We appreciate the fact that you mention WIFI. Unfortunately in Cuba, technology is not as advanced as in Canada yet. WIFI has been available for only under a year and it is not quick. The connection is unstable and sometimes goes off completely. Also, many web pages cannot be downloaded such as yahoo or gmail. We understand it can be frustrating, but unfortunately this service is offered by an outside provider and we have no control over how the connexion will behave. Please find below the instructions for future guests:

To connect to WIFI internet:
1. Activate WIFI in settings
2. Select : WIFI_RoyalHicacos.
3. Select : Connect
If your phone does not connect you directly, click ”Go to web site” when the security message appears.
4. Click on ”Here”on the welcome page
5. Scratch carefully the login and password on the back of the internet card.
Enter your login and password in CAPITAL LETTERS
6. Click on “Enter”
Very important
Your card holds 1 hour of WIFI connexion, which you can use at different intervals of minutes. To take full advantage of your card, it is very important that you disconnect every time you finish you using it by connecting to the following address : https://10.1.1.1

Once on this page, you will have access to the time you have used and the time you have left. Simply click on ‘Salir/Logout’ to disconnect and return to step 1 once you wish to connect again.

And as you mention, it is very important to disconnect every time you finish in order not to lose the minutes you have left on your internet card. And yes, we have poutine! And yes we know we have the best staff ever and we plan on growing together as a family to give our guests the best service they deserve!

Thank you, dear repeat guests for your informative review and for your trust. We appreciate so much that you took the time to give us your feedback.

We look forward to your 5th visit at Royal Hicacos, your amazing hotel!

This was our first visit to the Royal Hicacos Resort, but I have to say that of all the resorts I have been to in Cuba, this is the one I feel I will return to, even though I always said I would try something new each year! We had looked at the last minute deals, but decided to go with an adults only instead,as that is truly our preference. We were not disappointed from the moment we arrived until we left. The reason we love Cuba is the people, and this resort has amazing people. Every person working at this resort, from gardeners, cleaners, bar tenders, waiters/waitresses,etc were so pleasant and welcoming. The beach is amazing, the pool is great, except that so many people mark chairs in the morning and never use them all day, not the fault of the resort, but rude people. This resort has by far the best food I have ever had in Cuba or even the Dominican Republic. The A La Carts were good, but we really preferred the buffet. It did not matter if you were the first person or the last person at the buffet, the food was great. You had a choice of fresh cooked for you steak, lamb, burger, chicken, skewers, fish, pizza, pasta, etc and each night there was hip of beef, turkey, or pork, plus all the basics, which changed every night. Plus the desserts were awesome. Leo and Tania were amazing servers in the buffet, really made you feel welcome, which everyone did, but they went beyond. The rooms are a little dated but they were very clean and the housekeeping service everyday was great, we had a broken toilet seat one day, never reported it, as we were use to things getting done in time, but it was replaced that day when we returned, have never had this kind of service at other resorts. The resort was a Sandals but has been taken over as a Royalton, they are in process of making some changes, hopefully not too many, as the resort is great as is. It is quiet and tranquil , which some reviews made out to be a negative, but there were many young people there, which surprised us, but everyone young and old seemed to enjoy themselves and make the most of the beauty and tranquility. I really hope we can return next year and enjoy another great week!

Room Tip: We had requested a second floor room, which we did not get, but were really happy with the first flo...

Dear guests:

It seems you have us down to a T! You could not have described us more perfectly!

This is what makes Royalton Royalton. That you will never receive the kind of service you have received with us anywhere else. You could not have said it better! Our goal is to exceed your expectations and when we are able to do so, we sleep with more tranquility. We never stop though, as we believe there is always room for improvement and we look for it everywhere we can in order for you to enjoy the quiet and tranquility you deserve. That is also what Royalton was built for. Peace and relaxation. A little paradise where you can get away from it all and let us take over so you do not have to lift a finger.

Thank you for your comments about our buffet. Our executive chef is working endlessly to satisfy every palate and he has had amazing results so far. But it does not end there. He is currently working on the a la carte menus and we are certain you will be surprised there as well.

All departments are working on polishing our new diamond, but do not worry, we will not change what is already working well!

We appreciate your review dear guests, it was very interesting to read, thank you so much!

We also hope that you can return next year to Royal Hicacos, your great hotel!

My Wife & I just returned from a two week vacation at the Royal Hicacos resort in Cuba. The resort was beautiful , well laid out with large clean rooms. We had an excellent view of the gardens. The reception, bar, restaurants, pool, beach facilities were all first class. The meals at all of the restaurants were excellent. The selections were great ( Hip-of-beef, fish, Baked Ham, Turkey, etc., etc.) and everything was done to perfection. Above all else the staff of the Royal Hicacos were exceptional, they were friendly, helpful, well trained, and in every case went out of their way to make our vacation memorable. I would definitely recommend this resort.

The staff at this resort is amazing!! We have made some wonderful relationships with some very special people. Thank-you to everyone there for making our 5th vacation with you so memorable!! Dear repeat guests:

What beautiful comments, thank you so much! And thank you for your confidence and trust! 5 times is amazing!

Your comments are invaluable to us. They are the ones who guide us through the path to your satisfaction. Our new management has just recently started polishing its new diamond (and what a diamond it is!) and we are absolutely overwhelmed with joy. As you mention, the staff of this hotel is what makes this place shine day in and day out, what luck we have to work with such talented and experienced people every day!

Some renovation works will be in progress during the summer and we will keep you updated as soon as we have the details. Lobby and Lobby bar will be starting on May 2nd finally! Through the process though, rest assured that our staff and management will be there to ensure that you experience the best vacation ever!

Thank you again, dear repeat guests for your wonderful comments. It is an honor to receive them from experience travelers like yourselves.

We are looking forward to your 6th visit to Royal Hicacos your diamond shining in the sun!

As most travellers to this hotel know, this was the "SANDALS" last year. It is now under new management (Memories Hotel Chain) and plans are to make it a "Royalton" the "Luxury" all inclusive resorts of the chain.

There are a few things that have changed, all for the better since our last 10 day visit (march 2013). The BEACH is the most notable improvement. It was clear that SANDALS had given up trying the last year of their "ownership". The beach was very dirty and littered, not now. The new management must have combed the beach with a fine sift filter, many, many times ! Virtually all the cigarette butts, empty plastic glasses and bottles have all but dissapeared. It was VERY clean during our stay.

This hotel had the reputation for having one of the best food and assortment on the island. There were some omissions (no palm hearts, artichokes, excellent grade Olive oil) but discussions with the Food and Beverage Manager indicated things would get better once all the supplier contacts etc had been approved by the different local and management authorites. We did not particularly like the "artificial" syrups used (especially the "Maple Syrup" which was FAR from what real Quebec maple syrup is all about BUT THAT IS A VERY MINOR POINT, which will be corrected I'm sure. The quality and choice of the meats ansd seafoods was exceptionnal. Fresh salmon every day ! Even at the SANDALS period, the depth of the seafood assortment and meat selection was not as extensive and of such quality. When you pay premium rates, you expect premium grades and quality; on that level, they came through.

The grounds have been really cleaned up. The gardener working in our section (Concierge Building) was doing an exceptional job of giving his area a real make-over and rejuvenation. It is very clean and colourful with flowers aplenty. Some of the buildings have been repainted and refreshed and work was ongoing when we left. The maid service was flawless and the room very clean, The AC functionned so well we had to use a blanket and turn off the ceiling ventilator !

What has kept us coming back to this resort (besides the weather :-) ) has been the people. I have travelled (probably not as much as some of the readers here) a lot, and nowhere do I believe there is such a warm human reception (except in Polynesia, but that's REALLY FAR). The staff really goes out of its way to please. They are mostly always smiling (eh, who doesn't have an off-day ??!), always polite and go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. Sure, as with any resort, there are sometimes situations. These people do their utmost to solve these issues rapidly and to the guests' satisfaction.

IF the new management keeps its commitments to improvements and maintains the personnel, they will do BETTER than SANDALS.

It is my wish they succeed, the people who were there BEFORE them and made this hotel so very special for most of us,deserve at least that !

Room Tip: Go for the concierge rooms . Much closer to the beach and restaurants. You must note that most of th...

Dear repeat guests:

Is that bet we read? That you so much, your comments were very interesting to read!

As you mention, the Sandals chain left our new diamond exactly 1 year to this date in two days, and we were finally able to start polishing some three weeks ago. The Blue Diamond Resorts hotel chain owns other chains as well, Royalton being their 5-star luxury line. Royal Hicacos will eventually become a Royalton by October 2014, the second one followed by our pride and joy Royalton Cayo Santa Maria, which is currently the no. 1 best hotel in Cuba at the moment.

Thank you for noticing the first few changes that we are making. There are many more to come, but little by little as to interfere as little as we can with your important vacation time. And you are right, now that we are settling in, we will be able to expand greatly our offer of food and services and we are certain that you will be quite surprised by the choices we will offer you very soon (one of them being real Maple Syrup from Quebec)!

Your comments are very generous dear guests. Your opinion is so important to us, especially as a repeat guest who has so much experience traveling here. Who better to teach us their favorite things than you?

We look forward to welcoming you to your 6th visit to Royal Hicacos, your ever-returning hotel!
