“amazing vacation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2013 via mobile

i am 25, we stayed for 6 nights. The staff was amazing extremely courteous and helpful. Our room was basic with a semi ocean view and semi garden view, truthfully you don't need anything extravagant you don't go on vacation to spend the entire trip in your room. We spent everyday on the beach absolutely fantastic! The hotel is quite large it has 3 a la carte restaurants, one 24 hr cafe and a buffet. You must make reservations for the a la carte restaurants. "las resas" the steak house was decent .."Trinidad" is the restaurant on the cliff by the ocean its a seafood restaurant.. The food was horrible and are only given two options the langoustine or the chicken I tried ordering the chicken and the waiter insisted I order the langoustine.. it was absolutely horrible.. After eating at Trinidad we gave up on the restaurants and stuck to the buffet. the food at the buffet was fresh and pretty good the chefs make the food right to order in front of you and you can choose how you want your meal prepared or you can choose from pre made items. truthfully the buffet food here was 100% better than the buffet food i tried in las vegas!!...the staff at the buffet were amazing although on our last day for lunch we were asked by one of the waiters at the buffet if we could go to the mall plaza next door and purchase some clothing items for them it was a very awkward moment we managed to change the subject and left.. The pool is quite nice but freezing compared to the ocean there is a pool bar but you cant swim up to the bar. The hotel is absolutely spotless always clean the entertainment is pretty good but is over early. overall from my experience at this hotel it is a 5 star I had a wonderful time. If you are young and looking for more of a lively  hotel to party this is not the resort for you. If you are looking for a quiet peaceful relaxed vacation this is the perfect place.

We stayed in this hotel last week, at the end of our Cuba trip. We booked the hotel through a local tourist agency in Cuba and it was a nice surprise. Having read many negative things about hotels in Cuba, I was not sure what to expect. The hotel is definitely worth visiting for some days. Spacious, clean, nice staff and good food in the buffet restaurant. The steak house was not really good, while the food in Trinidad was great. Watch out for the small black fleas attacking you at this restaurant :) We couldnt really enjoy our dinner because of them. All the bars round the resort are nice, so just relax and enjoy your stay.
We had a room in the fifth floor with a great view and really enjoyed it. It was clean and equipped with all you need.
If you are looking for some lively atmosphere, music and fun, this is not a hotel for you. It is more of a calm and relaxed place.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor overlooking the ocean. Any of the rooms in the 54XX section would do...

3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2013

My husband and I stayed at the Melia Varadero with another couple for ten days at the end of November. We found the resort to be clean, but dated, and some areas are worn and slightly grubby (faded paint, empty planters, etc). Our room (4612) however, was great, with the best feature being the huge wrap around terrace with 180 degree views. The room was very clean, the bed comfortable.
The pool is small, and quite cool, and wasn't always cleaned as well as it could be (floating bugs and drink cups). There were lots of lounge chairs, but many of them were pretty stretched out and in need of replacing in my opinion.
The resort is perched on the edge of a rock, with a small stretch of beach on either side, about 1/2 mile in each direction. The sand is soft, the water turquoise blue and warm, but there's quite a drop down to the water you have to navigate, and a large rock shelf on both sides of the hotel. When we were there the beach bar was serving only drinks, even though in the hotel information it states they also serve light meals.
There's a terrific juice bar at the top of the stairs down to the beach that serves the best pina coladas at the resort. The drinks at the beach bar and piano bar were far from stellar and service in the piano bar was spotty at best. The terrace overlooking the grounds and beach just outside the piano bar is lovely with it's painted pillars and sweeping views.
The a la carte restaurants in my opinion are not worth visiting. There is greater choice at the buffet and probably better food. We ate at the steakhouse one night which was quite good, but your choices are very limited. The flambéed banana dessert was cool. Another night we ate at Trinidad and the lobster I was served was so disgusting I couldn't eat it, and it made me ill. The others in my party all had the lobster as well and said theirs were "ok". There was no choice of ordering, you eat what you're given. After that experience we gave up on the a la cartes and ate the rest of our meals at the buffet, save a midday paella at the Ranchon grill bar that was pretty, but just a little fishy (not as fresh as it could have been).
The 24 hour café Guantanamero has a small buffet serving pastries, and another with miscellaneous pickles. You can also order burgers or hot dogs with fries, sandwiches and pizza. If you order the burger make sure you tell the server to cook it well, as ours were only slightly more than half cooked the two times we chanced it. The pizza and sandwiches are very sparsely topped/filled, but are edible. That's the best I can say.....
Honestly, your best bet is the buffet La Habana where you can peruse the vast offerings and choose what you like. We received outstanding service in La Habana from Louis and his crew. If you want to follow up on this recommendation and sit in Louis's section, just stand and watch the servers for two minutes and it will be obvious; his enthusiasm and energy really stand out!
This is supposed to be a 4 star resort, but my 3 star rating is generous here.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2013

We just returned from our trip, we stayed 10 nights at the Melia Veradero. We didn't have high expectations, because of other reviews, but the hotel exceeded our expectations.
Room: firm beds (which are better than saggy mattresses), very soundproof from room to room, and a spacious bathroom. We had a peak at the ocean from the 3rd floor. The only downside was that our room was above the 24 hr cafeteria - and certain groups partied all night long. I would like to see the partiers be moved indoors after 11 pm for the comfort of all the other guests. We tried to change rooms the first day but the front desk said they were full (which was not true as the beach/pool areas were not busy at all).
Food: no issues making reservations at the a la carte restaurants - we could book a day in advance and the food & musical groups were excellent. We never waited for service at the buffet either (like some guests have complained), and the servers were awesome.
Activities: The Activity folks did a great job of getting participants for water exercises, bocce etc. There were also bicycle tours to nearby resorts & kayaks to paddle around in. The only downside was when it got windy, the hobie cat sailboat would not go out- they said it was too dangerous (even though the attendant sails the boat, not us) so consequently the boat was never out past 1 pm! That didn't make sense to us- that would be great sailing! The "Cuba Day" was a blast- they roasted a pig, had all kinds of special drinks & food out on the deck & we ate while the entertainment crew danced for us.
Beach: Lots of palapas for shade, never an issue for getting loungers except we couldn't figure out why people reserved a palapa simply to store their beach bag in the shade. That meant others could not use the shaded area.
We did several shore dives with the local scuba shop - the diving was not great for experienced divers but for me, the beginner, it satisfied me and we saw lots of great stuff. The price was very reasonable and because the depth was low (7 m) we could stay down for 85 minutes!
Tours: we hired a private car to take us to Havana for the day- we saw way more than the others we talked with that took the bus tour. Thats the way to go and cheaper expecially for 2 couples. We took the "hop on/Hop off" bus (5 pesos each/ return) to downtown Veradero to shop at the flea markets. We never felt unsafe for a moment, the locals were very friendly & did not bug us to buy stuff- they accepted "no" and we moved on. We also hired a 1927 Model T taxi for a ride- that was fun.
Areas for improvement:
I would like to see more Non smoking areas - some of us are sensitive to smoke & it is everywhere (except while dining).
It would be helpful to get a map of the grounds when you check in - takes everyone a day or 2 to find everything- its a big resort!
Management should offer better hand hygiene to their staff (after visiting the restroom) - that's all i am going to say about this!

Room Tip: Don't take a room anywhere near the 24 hr cafeteria, Partiers all night long! Not an issue waiti...

Three nights here on an all inclusive basis. Service was great and staff very enthusiastic. Room was ok even though at front of hotel. Lots of bars and restaurants to choose from. You have to book the !a la carte" restaurants in advance. We felt the buffet restaurant offered a better range of fresh food. Beach was wonderful. Take note that the hotel pool seemed to be "freezing" all the time even though the air temperature must have been around 30'C.

In short. I had a great tour in varadero. This Hotel is wonderful, 5 stars with an excellent service. Comfortable rooms with large bathrooms and very quiet. The adjacent beach is the most beautiful in the world. Everything was excellent on this Stay. Very good service, something hard to find in Cuba.

We stayed here the first night we landed on the 28th October. We go to our room and it was very nice, sea view, flat screen television. We stayed for one night before we started our tour. We then returned back on the 8th November for 3 nights and when we got to our room we were very disappointed. The view was of the front of the hotel overlooking the road, tv from the 50's, Air con not working very good, old style safe with a bog key to carry. Obviously the hotel does not care about there customers as if they did you would think we would have got an updated room on our return even if without the sea view. We felt like we was just another customer were as we had already stayed here for one night we are a returning customer but the hotel doesn't seem to recognize this and this is very disappointing. However the food in the restaurants is quite a good standard and lots of choice. The pool is nice not the biggest but nice. I think the whole hotel could do with and update and also they need to take care of the grounds more, In dominican you see gardeners all day in this hotel i didn't see one?

Room Tip: Need to try and get an updated room!
