“beautiful hotel, would recommend”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2013

Stayed at this resort on our first hot vacation years ago. It is beautiful and the staff were excellent. there were a lot of activities at the resort, but because we were there for a wedding, a lot of our time was spoken for.

Compared to how many inexpensive packages you can find, we did find this resort on the pricey side. It was however, clean, very safe, and had a beautiful beach.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2013

On October 19, 2013 we were lucky enough to win a trip to the Melia Varadero in Varadero Cuba. The last time we had been to Varadero was in 1993 and we intend to go back. We enjoyed a beautiful room, the service was exceptional and the food was amazing and the beaches were splendid. I do not have one bad thing to say about this hotel.

Made a few trips in to Varadero which was so easy and so many things have changed. Had a beautiful day shopping and strolling then took a slow and easy calèche ride to the main market.

A special thank you to Eva at the pool, Liudmila and Jose at the Havana, Michael at the Guantanamera Snack Bar one of my favorite spots in the morning for coffee. The fine staff at the Fuerteventura (What a dinner it was wonderful). Thank you to all the rest of the staff who made our stay so enjoyable.

Room Tip: Go for the fifth floor we had an excellent view of the ocean and the water pressure is great.

We just returned from the Melia Varadero Nov.23rd and overall our experience was average. I will try and keep this simple and easy to follow along.

-When we arrived at the hotel, approx. 1pm, our room was not ready- nor anybody else's from our flight. I know check in isn't until 3pm, but I've stayed at, at least 15 resorts in the Caribbean and the rooms have always been ready no matter what time we arrived. We came back at 2:30pm to the front desk and the room still wasn't ready so they switched us to another ocean view room on the 3rd floor.

-The water pressure in the room was not good and the a/c was not working the best the first day. We notified the front desk regarding the a/c the following day and it was fixed by the time we got back to the room at the end of the day.

-The rooms are nice but on the smaller side. They are kept very clean. Our maid was wonderful and did a great job!

-The hotel does look a bit run down, but it's nothing too bad. The pool is on the colder and smaller side.

-The ocean is beautiful in front of the resort. However you have to walk a bit of a distance to avoid a wall of sand (probably from a hurricane or storm) and the rocks in the sand.

-Food isn't too bad, nice selection and it's warmer then other places we've stayed in Cuba. The quality of food isn't like how we have in Canada, the meat isn't the best and the vegetables taste different then ours.

-Service was alright. We had great buffet staff, they we really good to us! It was very slow to get drinks after dinner though. It seemed they didn't have enough waiters/waitresses to serve all of the tables inside and outside. If you would go up to the bar, it would take almost 15 minutes to get 2 drinks as the bar tenders are quite slow. You have to go and get your own drinks at the pool, no big deal but most resorts have people coming around to your chairs asking if you want anything.

-The women's washroom by the main bar and entertainment area frequently ran out of toilet paper and hand soap.

-The weather was perfect, best weather we've had on vacation so far. No rain at all and at least 30 degrees everyday.

-When we checked out the guy at the desk didn't say hardly anything to us besides "can I have your towel cards." He did not ask how our stay was or if we enjoyed ourselves.

Overall the resort wasn't too bad; however we're pretty easy going though. You get what you pay for, we went for roughly $1000 Canadian (inc. taxes) and got our money's worth. If you want 5 star amenities and service this isn't the place, it's maybe 3 1/2 - 4 star.

Room Tip: If you have upgraded to an ocean view room, ask for a room on a higher floor. You will have a better...

We stayed in Melia Varadero in November 2013. The Hotel is in good position to the beach, have conection with another hoteis in the area. But need renovation in the principal building. We smell humidity and see parts for repair. The human attention is excellent except in the Buffet where whe have situation for be Cubans. We receive bad treatment for part of a women worker in discrimination. Another places is 90%!!! I want to send Congratulations and recommended the Restaurant front the Pool. We eat the best Paella in the world and the attention for the workers is excellent principal Wiki.

I will keep this review basic as I've finally decided to add reviews to Trip Advisor and this review is dated as I visited there 4 years ago...(end of Feb 2010)

Background info, 30 years old, Canadian, went there with 2 couples. Paid $1200 Canadian. Like to leave resorts when travelling, typically if going out for dinner would go to the likes of The Keg, Canyon Creek, Jack Astors, etc. Like to drink beer and have a good time, not much into clubing as much as pubs and patio bars.

Hotel location is perfect for Veradero, far enough out of the town that your away from the lower end hotels but close enough for a cheap taxi into town or a 5 minute moped ride. It is located right beside the golf course as well as a small mall which is nice for picking up souvenirs, rum, cigars or a slice of Pizza Delight. Also I found out that at the tip of Veradero is where the sewage plant is and smells can obviously blow towards those hotels at the end of the strip. The Melia or any resort right near the golf course is my suggestion for sure.

The rooms were nice, pretty normal for an all inclusive in that price range. Clean room, washroom, only really was in it to sleep. I was on the 2nd floor which was great as we didnt have to wait for elevators.

Beach was really nice, only shared it with one other resort and the beach bar was right there for snacks and drinks. It is off to the side of the hotel but literally a 2 min walk to get into the many available lounge chairs right near the beach bar.

Food....everyone is scaired of Cuba for food. I had no problems with it, made to order egges, omelettes for breakfast. Dinners were good always something to eat assuming your not a picky eater. Dont like the looks of it......eat something else. Plenty of choice. 24 hour snack bar makes good pizzas, pasta, etc.

Bars.... daytime always at the pool bar (not a swip up bar) or the beach bar. Disco is pretty lame as its not really a party hotel. Piano/lobby bar was a nice place to chill and have mojito's. High end liquor was extra but unless you want scotch there's always an option.

If you want to dance and party, probably not the resort for you, except I found Veradero super safe at any time of day or night so leaving the resort to go to town or some of the clubs is not an issue at all.

Rent a moped for the week if you like to get off the resort and go to town for the flea market, go for food at some of the local restaurants, check out the bat cave along the highway, lots of things to do and see in Veradero.

I would recommend this resort and would stay there again, but probably won't cause you only live once so I will continue to go to different cities, countries and resorts.

If your going there, enjoy it!! It's a great value, great service, friendly staff, people who complain about towels, beach chairs, food should remember what they are paying for a week in the Caribbean and if they want better, pay for it and go to Aruba or Bahamas.

Room Tip: 2nd or 3rd floor to avoid waiting for elevators.

Renovated?! I dont think so...
Anyway, the place doesnt need renovation as much as to be cleaner. Also, they were renovating some rooms near our which was very unpleasent experience for us.
The buffet was average and al la carte didnt impress me. Live music was excellent at evenings & the beach was nice.
Staff are lazy and if you dont tip them before you ask for smething, you will be waiting forever.
Overall, if you dont expect 5* you will have a nice holiday.

Room Tip: If you want to get a good service, tip staff before you ask for something.

Styaed in the Meila Varadero in November 2013 and enjoyed our 9 days there.

The hotel is a little tired and needs some renovation, but nothing to put you off if you're aware of this before visiting.

The pool and beach are great, sunbeds by the pool could do with replacing but nice overall!

THe buffet resturant is average, you're best bet it to eat the freshly prepared pasta or grilled meat but there will be queues. The al la carte retsurants at lunch and in the evening are good quality and the food is of a much better standard than the buffet. The 24 hour cafe is also good for snacks.

The bars are nice and there was some nice live music in evenings - enough to keep you entertained.

I'd say that the Melia Varadero is good overall. After reading loads of reviews and picking here I'd say it is a safe option in Varadero, the food is decent overall, beach is good, pool is ok and drinks are good.
