We spent a lot of time trying to find the right resort for us in Varadero Cuba. We are a family of 4 travelling with a toddler (under 2) and a 4 year old. After a very stressful search for a good resort we settled on Breezes Bella Costa.
The reviews were mostly good on TripAdvisor, some were bad, but everyone knows that some people will have a bad time wherever they go.
Check in was smooth, our room was good. 2 double beds and a baby crib as well as a small cot. We got rid of the cot and pushed the 2 double beds together to form one big bed. The room had an in-room refrigerator, a balcony, television with cable, and working air conditioning. Bathroom was spacious and we always had hot water.
No complaints about the room.
The resort was the perfect size. There was one large main pool, and right next to that was a children's pool. Our toddler could putter around in the kids pool without any worries, our 4 year old preferred the kids pool to the main pool so that worked out great as well.
The resort is right on the beach so there is a very short walk to the beach. The water was crystal clear and clean. There is a restaurant right at the beach where you can walk to get snacks and drinks.
There are 3 specialty restaurants on the resort, a Japanese, a Cuban, and an Italian restaurant. Being Italian I am overly critical of Italian food. I wasn't too happy with that. It was just spaghetti with different toppings, like roasted chicken, shrimp or whatever else.
The Japanese restaurant lacked actual sushi or wasabe. The rice dishes were actually really good when you mixed in the 3 provided sauces (soya, terriyaki and a white sauce) .. mix all 3 with your rice bowl and your choice of meat (shrimp, beef or chicken) and you get a really good rice bowl. The tempura was really good as well. They are pretty small portions so its best to keep ordering as you go.
We never made it to the cuban restaurant just due to our own scheduling issues and leaving the resort for dinner a couple times. Others we spoke to said it was really good. They were serving fresh fish like Red Snapper.
The main restaurant is Jimmy's buffet. This restaurant has plenty of good food, including rice and beans, chicken, burgers, fries. There is a pasta station where you choose your ingredients like onions, mushrooms, peppers, tomatos, and the chef will fry those up, add your choice of red or white sauce (or both) and then broil that for a minute or two then thrown in your choice of pasta ( I chose Penne ) and cook that up for another 2-3 minutes so you get piping hot fresh pasta dish. They give you quite a bit. I absolutely loved this.
Jimmy's restaurant also had quite a bit of fresh fruit, different cheeses ( my wife fell in love with blue cheese here.. she needs it now all the time lol ). Bottom line, there is plenty of food here you won't go hungry and you should not be disappointed. I didnt hear anyone complain about the food at this resort. On the bus to the resorts other travellers were telling us that the food in cuba is terrible. They had not stayed at Bella Costa and were going to cheaper places like Palma Real.... you get what you pay for folks.. Bella Costa is not very expensive so why go super cheap and suffer with bad food.
Drinks on the resort are somewhat watered down. I think this is the same for all resorts. They dont want a bunch of drunk people stumbling around being beligerant. You can buy your own booze if you wanna get wasted, but expect your beer to be maybe 2.5% and your mixed drinks to have 25% of the alcohol that a normal mixed drink would have.
You can buy bottled beer and rum and whatever else if you choose to get wasted..
This resort is close enough to downtown Varadero that you can walk into town if you don't mind walking. A taxi into town is $7 CUC. (about $8 Canadian). We went to town 4 times and had a great time shopping and eating. I would recommend the restaurant Mallorca in town. I would stay away from Al Capone's. My wife left her Coach sunglasses at Al Capone's and we called there when we got back to the resort and they didn't have them. The food was awful some overcooked some under cooked and just generally crap for $75 CUC.
Varadero is a great place to vacation. Breezes Bella Costa is a good resort for families. I didn't even mention the large lobby bar, the excellent cappuccinos, the friendly and helpful staff, or any of that. All in all I would highly recommend this resort and I think I will be back there again sooner than later!
