“Royal Service Paradisus Varadero - Simply Divine”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2012

I have just returned from a five night stay at the Paradisus Royal Service with my mother and friend. We had a simply fantastic stay and couldn't have asked for more. We've been to many 5* star hotels worldwide, although some other guests rightly say that this is slightly different to what they expected - they forget that this is Cuba. Although all things considered we could not really fault it - we enjoyed endless amounts of fresh fish, carpaccio, lobster and 7 anos.

Although we spent time in both parts of the hotel and used the beach at the main hotel more, the Royal Service side of the hotel was fantastic and takes some beating. Having been to Cuba before I would definitely say that this is the best beach hotel by a wide margin.

There are so many details that go into the stay that really make it that bit special. The staff are without a shadow of a doubt the most important part and really made our stay. Some hotels in Cuba have to put it mildly, surly staff but here everyone from the Gardeners (who brought us coconuts and made us palm leaf hats) to the Butlers, golf cart drivers and pool side cocktail waiters were fantastic. They all spoke perfect English, were extremely jovial, welcoming and helpful (this all went a long way to making our stay special and not just another posh hotel stay). A special mention and favourite of ours were the pool side bar staff who made gorgeous fresh fruit cocktails served in the pool, jacuzzi, on the beach hammocks and pool side day beds.

I would highly recommend you make full use of the butler service - they made numerous restaurant bookings and even brought down a cooler box of champagne, ice, and juices to our day bed on the beach.

We stayed in a suite with an ocean view and often enjoyed relaxing on the balanise bed after a hard days relaxing by the RS poo, l but by far our favourite part of the room was the outside shower area.

We will definitely be returning if not before the end of the year then next, the warm welcoming staff and intimate atmosphere.

I would agree with other comments to remember that daily toiletries we take for granted are very hard to come so remember to pack extra to leave to the staff. In local bars, restaurants and even the airport you will be expected to give a tip in exchange for toilet paper. The mosquito's not are bad in the hotel (in fact we didn't wear any spray during our trip) as they spray the grounds but outside of the hotel, mosquito spray is a must.

Had a wonderful time at the varadero paradisus. We took Royal service stay in the section almost all the week. The restaurant Bellamar is great and the staff too. Took the Chateaubriand and is was cooked perfectly. Appreciate especially Serguey, Luis eneriquez, the wonderful smile of Ibelise at the pool and the funny George at the pool too. Everyone actually treat us kindly. The beach of the Royal isn't for swinmming, but great to relax and the other beach isn't far. We eat only one time at the principal buffet and it was good but a little bit cold. Prefer the Bellamar at the royal section. The garden and the principal pool were wonderful. I'd prefer to have more music in the evening at the lobby but the saxophone with the piano was good. This place is perfect for relaxing but i'm not so sure for couples who like lot of animation... The main beach needs a little bit more of cleaning, but it rain a lot and i think it's the reason of it. Only made 2 trips in cuba and many more in punta cana in the five stars hotels and i definitely think that the Paradisus varadero worth his stars. First time there but surely not the last!

That was my second time in Paradisus. I´ve been there last year on vacation and a really loved tha atmosphere of the hotel. The facilities are amazing but what really makes the difference is the Paradisus staff team !

I had my wedding in the hotel and it was perfect since the reception of my guests ( Thanks Yasel ) until the wedding dinner passing thru the cerimony of course!!!! I had 2 person helping my wife and I the role time ( Yurisan and Glenda, Fantastic JOB )

The hotel beach restaraunt & bar is fantastic. if you go there ask to Amaury ( the best barman in Varadero ) to make you the Special Mojito !!!!

I strongly recommend the hotel and I´ll definly go back very soon!

The Royal Service section of Paradisus Varadero really does what it says and is worth every cent. Royal Service guests have their own pool, restaurant and private faciltiies but of course still have access to all the facilities and beaches of the main hotel. The accomodation is
absolutely luxurious with superb bathrooms with outsize Jacuzzi baths and a delightfull outdoor shower area with private garden (on ground floor villas) The balconies are beautifully furnished with a lovely day bed to lounge on. The food was absolutely excellent and guests have the opportunity to eat lobster most evenings in the restaurant. What really makes this hotel outstanding is the wonderful staff and service - nothing is too much trouble, in short
Royal Service really is royal service and I cannot praise this hotel highly enough. We spent 5 nights and it was an absolute pleasure to be there

I certainly would not wish to stay at any other hotel as it was one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in and this includes some excellent 5 star hotels in Mexico. What sets Royal Service apart is the absolutely superb service and relaxed air of luxury and the superb staff,

I have rated this hotel 4 stars as no matter what anyone says there is always room for improvement. If you have been spoilt in a 5 star hotel in say Cancun don’t compare it to here as they are 2 totally different places and way of life.

I stayed here for 12 days with the missus and had an excellent time and would say this has to be the best or 1 of the best hotels in Cuba (from reading the likes of Tripadvisor), if I return I will visit again. We were in the royal service end in a master suite with ocean view. The room was very nice also unlike a lot of hotels in 1 building these are detached rooms spreading quite a distance so be prepared for a bit of walking. This can be nice, there is also a few like golf cars driven by the staff who will take you about to get places i.e. restaurants.

I noticed many of the other royal service guests only stayed at the royal service part of the hotel I think this is silly as the whole hotel has a lot to offer. The main pool is twice maybe 3 times as big as the royal service pool so don’t be scared to have a wander if you are royal service.

During our stay we had a few minor problems and I would like to say a big thank you to the royal service manager for speaking to us personally to get them resolved. I would also like to thank our 2 butlers Fernando and Yoandy who made our stay that bit more special.
I found all the staff in this hotel to be friendly and were willing to help. Even the gardeners would do things for you like getting coconuts or giving a pretty flower to the ladies it all adds that extra touch.

I must point out also... visit the main pool bar (the swim up bar) and find Yasel, ask him for a Yasel special. I don’t know what is in this drink but it was amazing we told him it needs to be added to the menu. At 1 stage there was 8 people sitting round the pool bar drinking 1.

To finish this review here are our tips for visiting Cuba in general – Bring mosquito spray this is a must, if there is rain why you are there this will bring many mosquito’s, I personally recommend Jungle Formula. If you travel anywhere outside of the hotel take toilet paper as you will be charged for the use of it at public toilets. Toiletries you would buy in a shop at home are hard to get here and about triple the price so make sure you pack everything.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for royal service, it is worth it.

We stayed at the Paradisus for 4 nights in June 2012 and had a wonderful time. We were welcomed with champagne and a personal introduction to all the facilities of the hotel.

The hotel lobby is lovely, all open-air with plants and ponds everywhere, lots of chairs to lounge about in, and a view through the trees of the bright blue sea and the white sand of the beach.

The lobby opens out onto the pool area - the pool itself is huge and surrounded by palm trees everywhere. Loads of sunbeds, we never had any problems finding any at any time of the day.

The beach is huge, with lovely white, soft sand and clear blue, warm water which is shallow really far out. Quite a lot of seaweed floating around down one end of the beach, but you can move further up if you don't like that. We spent most days by the beach, and found a sunbed with a shade any time we wanted one.

The restaurants were nice - we managed to get reservations in the Cuban and Romantic restaurants, and on the last night had a special dinner by the pool which was followed by an aqua-ballet performance. The food was fine in the restaurants, quite small portions but several courses. We ate at the buffet restaurant at the other times, which had a wide variety of food choices and freshly cooked meat and fish, pasta, pizza, sushi, salad etc. The restaurant was open air at the sides with a view out over the beach and sea.

The room was lovely, quite big and had a few levels, and we had a beautiful ocean view and terrace area to sit on. The beds were huge, and we had a flat screen tv, free minibar, and lots of sofas/chairs. The bathroom was nice as well.

There was lots of entertainment available in the day and in the evenings, we did dancing lessons on the beach, volleyball, we also tried archery, rifle shooting and played tennis (these are away from the beach area). The animation team made a big effort to be friendly and put on a wide variety of activities but weren't pushy at all. Evening entertainment was great - lots of shows, parties, a club, a lovely lobby area with live music (saxophone, piano etc) and you could sit at the bar and order whatever cocktails you wanted, whenever you wanted (same by the beach). Delicious pina coladas! There was no issue with tipping - we tipped small amounts after meals for example most of the time, but not always, but it made no difference whatsoever, everyone was friendly and the service was fantastic whether you tipped or not.

We had a wonderful time here and were very sad to leave, would thoroughly recommend staying here.

Although a first visit to Cuba, we would point out we have travelled as a couple for over 30 years on holidays varying from backpacking round Greece & rural Europe, other Caribean Islands,Morocco & Tunisia.
Never did we expect around £4000 to be so badly spent.
We do agree the hotel setting & grounds are really beautiful, & the quality of drinks served is good.
On arrival we could have upgraded to Royal service for another £1000+. How glad we are we did not do this. At least now not having wasted this money, we can treat ourselves to a holiday in the Autumn to the Canaries instead.
The rooms are dated(but agree that's Cuba), & very tatty. Quite frankly we have stayed in better rooms in UK roadside chains. Air conditioning malfunctions, broken patio door locks, unreliable hot water supply, & random fire alarm ringing. The maids do however keep the rooms spotless - maintenance is not their domain.
Food, we thought was abyssmal. What a treat the meal was on the plane home!
We appreciate shortages can be a problem, but this is no excuse for poor preparartion, storage & presentation. Tables at busy times are left uncleared which attarcts a lot of flies. If you do find a reset table it may well have crumbs on from the previous diners.
Food remains under lights drying out & curling up in the case of fish, or sweating in the case of cheese.
We experienced slices of mouldy food amongst other perfectly nice food, & lovely platters of fruit invaded by fruit flies.
Some staff are very attentive, but others stand ignoring customers while they chat. No- one ever seemed in overall supervision, to sharpen up the service.
Speciality restuarants are easy to book as the resort is so quiet, & here standards were better but not consistently so. The portions are fairly small, so many people go round to the buffet afterwards.
Following a meal one night, my husband became particularly unwell which persisted for 24 hours.
Obviously this lead us to become very hygiene aware. While the lobby toilets are spotless, other toilets had bins with no lids.
Pool areas are lovely, spacious with plenty of options for sun or shade & never busy. What a shame the 2 jacuzzis never functioned during our stay.
Following our comments on the customer review, which we hoped would be regarded as constructive, we were indeed offered an upgrade on a future holiday. No thanks, we won't be coming back. We accepted instead a complimentary massage & spa session which was lovely but a shame the steam room & some shower features were out of action.
Whilst we can now notch up Cuba on our travel list, our experience here makes us realise the fabulous quality of holiday accommodation available to the UK market in the Spanish & Canarian destinations.
