I have just returned from a five night stay at the Paradisus Royal Service with my mother and friend. We had a simply fantastic stay and couldn't have asked for more. We've been to many 5* star hotels worldwide, although some other guests rightly say that this is slightly different to what they expected - they forget that this is Cuba. Although all things considered we could not really fault it - we enjoyed endless amounts of fresh fish, carpaccio, lobster and 7 anos.
Although we spent time in both parts of the hotel and used the beach at the main hotel more, the Royal Service side of the hotel was fantastic and takes some beating. Having been to Cuba before I would definitely say that this is the best beach hotel by a wide margin.
There are so many details that go into the stay that really make it that bit special. The staff are without a shadow of a doubt the most important part and really made our stay. Some hotels in Cuba have to put it mildly, surly staff but here everyone from the Gardeners (who brought us coconuts and made us palm leaf hats) to the Butlers, golf cart drivers and pool side cocktail waiters were fantastic. They all spoke perfect English, were extremely jovial, welcoming and helpful (this all went a long way to making our stay special and not just another posh hotel stay). A special mention and favourite of ours were the pool side bar staff who made gorgeous fresh fruit cocktails served in the pool, jacuzzi, on the beach hammocks and pool side day beds.
I would highly recommend you make full use of the butler service - they made numerous restaurant bookings and even brought down a cooler box of champagne, ice, and juices to our day bed on the beach.
We stayed in a suite with an ocean view and often enjoyed relaxing on the balanise bed after a hard days relaxing by the RS poo, l but by far our favourite part of the room was the outside shower area.
We will definitely be returning if not before the end of the year then next, the warm welcoming staff and intimate atmosphere.
I would agree with other comments to remember that daily toiletries we take for granted are very hard to come so remember to pack extra to leave to the staff. In local bars, restaurants and even the airport you will be expected to give a tip in exchange for toilet paper. The mosquito's not are bad in the hotel (in fact we didn't wear any spray during our trip) as they spray the grounds but outside of the hotel, mosquito spray is a must.
