I am a 19 year old picky girl who had high expectations before attending, and it lived up to mine and everyone else I met there expectations. I arrived on the 23 of Feb and this was my first time to Cuba so I wasnt sure what to expect. But heres a review on the whole trip not just the resort.
We arrived at around 10:00pm that night and check in was slow but that is understandable when a bus load of people show up.
The rooms were just like any hotel room you get here in Canada and just as modern. Beds were comfy and they leave you with an extra body pillow and 2 blankets, We had hot water everyday but the shower did flood the bathroom just about everday, which was easy to fix, throw a smaller towel they give you down and once your done throw it in the shower. The room had tons of closet space and hangers if you needed and well as many tables to leave stuff. Room was very updated and functional, they support up to 1000watts which is plenty( but just so girls know cause my hair dryer was over).
Our maid was great! Very happy with her, met her on the first day we introduced ourselves and immediately gave her a tip when she helped us with the power sitaution(ended up being no problem just me). She cleaned the room spotless everyday and left towel decorations on the bed. Room always smelted good after she cleaned, always had clean towels and she spoke to us everytime we seen her. Left her a dollar a day.
Before going everyone complained about the food, which seriously is not that bad! Yes it did get repeative but no one I was with got sick or went hungry. Everday for breakfast they had two people making eggs at each end of the buffet which everyone seemed to want.S ome of the food isn't what we would have for breakfast but remeber, you're not in Canada.Breakfast was managable for the week but I was happy to get home to cereal. (Buffet closed at 10 for breakfast for all you late risers). For lunch you have the option of the beach buffet or the resort buffet. I only had the resort buffet which was also not to bad. They offered pasta everyday and also had someone cooking something up at the other end which if it was something I liked I always tried and usually liked it. But lunch seemed to consist of similar stuff that dinner did. Its easy to survive. Yes there was a few birds flying in the buffet but they don't go anywhere near the food and you really don't even notice them in there.
They also offer a snack bar by the pool which served really good ham and cheese and hot dogs.
I would 110 percent reccommend going to the a la cartes! They are an awesome break from the buffet and make it easier to eat buffet when you need to. The line to make reservations for them was very long but worth the wait! We ate at all 3 and enjoyed every one. ( I also recommend not ordering the "homemade dessert with sauce and cheese", but it was a good laugh. )
Another suggestion is when you travel to Varadeo try eat local food cause it was amazing. We stopped at Barracado and a little snack bar called Melaita Snack bar. Barracado was close to the resort and served great food for cheap, was very happy with the meal! The snack bar was still on the main road in varadeo but farther down, we got a huge meal that I shared and was still full for under 7 dollars! There is also a resturant right across from the resort which we were told was good but never tried. So many options for cheap that replaced buffet for a change.
Bring snacks for at the pool, beach or after dinner so you have the extra option as well.
I don't drink coffee but everyone loved the coffee here, (they offered black tea) staff was great and fast serving you.
Bring your own cup as theres are very small, but always had fast service at the bars. They do put way to much alcohol in your drink but if you ask for less they do it. Each bar makes the drink differently. Really no complaints about any of the bars though. Pool bar is the main one for nightly drinking.
Obviously it was beautiful, crystal water and amazing swimming and went on forever. Loved it, I give it a 5. You can walk down the beach both ways to check out other resorts and people watch. It was cleaned every night and there was no seaweed. Lots of chairs but usually gone by 10-11 cause people leave the towel there so they get a seat and shade.
Other then its a little small it was great as well. Lots of chairs around pool but like every resort people leave their towel there for a seat. It is a louder area cause of the pool bar but it isn't overly loud. Pool was always clean as well as the surrounding area.
Tour Bus/ transportation to town:
There is a decker bus the travels everyday 9-9, you pay 5 dollars for the whole day to ride as much as you want and it takes you into the market and different resturants/shops, or going other way takes you to other resorts. Its well worth the 5 dollars. Now it is usually packed full (too full) but you don't have to be on it to long and it becomes a bit funny.
They have taxis and horse carriages that you can take to town as well for usually 5 dollars which we never did. You will notice that everyone you see in a taxi or horse carriage will ask you for a ride say no and they go away.
Awesome, you're probably a 15-20 minute walk into Varadeo and the shops there.
My really only complaint was that the front desk and people working in the rum gift shop didn't offer any good customer service. They continue doing what they were doing before you arrived till they felt like helping you and didn't seem that happy but you don't deal with them much so it isn't a huge problem. The one night our air conditioning stopped working and the guy came right in and fixed it without a problem. Worked rest of trip.
Guys will notice that any men working on the resort will try and sell you cigars daily, don't buy them they are fakes. But say no and they leave.
Hope this helps some of you. I know reading peoples reviews helped me and I think most will be very happy with this resort.
Just a few side notes: they do not give you a new water bottle everyday, you fill them with filtered water at the bars, and there is about 5 cats on the resort, they are friendly and cause no harm.
