Just returned from a week at the Trypp Hotel 2 days ago. Let's start with the best parts:
1) The beach the beach the beach. Varadero probably has one of the nicest beach anywhere, it is that way naturally. The hotels keep it that way with loving (or at least hard) care.
1b) THE GLORY of CUBA. The people, the staff the waiters, the workers are pleasant, smiling and competent. They are the ones who make a difference.
Of course Fidel recently decided that they have to stop fraternizing so much with the tourists. The moto of the state is "if it works try to break it" the secondary phrase is "it's boken because of the yankees".
2) The hotel grounds are superb and extremely well kept. Like living in one large garden, flowers everywheres coconuts and every kind of palm trees.
3) The facilities are numerous, and the quality of the equipment is very high. Seaside there are sailing boats, sea kayaks, surfboards etc...
4) The food is extremely well presented and very good in the "a la carte" restaurants but the space available makes it close to impossible to have a night time reservations. The same restaurants have the same menu and service at lunch time without reservations. Well worth it. The rest of the time you are stuck with the abundant, boring sometimes quite terrible food at the buffet. It is extremely well presented, warm and abundant that's about all the compliments one can make about the buffet.
5) The bedrooms are well appointed though by no means luxurious. The beds would be a chiropractor's best friend for creating instant business. The TV has satellite reception with 22 stations, in many languages. A few US stations (CNN, FOX) but no basic networks. Lights are adequate, there is a safety deposit box in the room which you program yourself. The bathroom is very modern with good amenities.
6) Souvenir shop: don't waste your time nothing here.
7) Book shop: 33 titles on display 11 about Che. Miserable and sad
8) Newspapers or magazines: NONE 0 NADA and that is true everywhere in Cuba. No international no local press. Even if you read spanish you're out of luck. The only newspaper available is Granma a sorry excuse for a national newspaper. The official press of the state. It would shame any decent junior college. 8 pages of a tabloid format written by --- lickers glorifying the state and terrified of stating any opinion other than Fidel's and his geriatric bredens.
9) Money exchange, don't believe the official line. They have a tax on US dollars (10%) but supposedly not on other currencies. The rates from last week were for Canadian dollars: Sell pesos at $1.28095 and buy them back at $1.18236. Make a quick calculation start with $100.00 Can. change them into convertible pesos get 78.12 Conv. Pesos change them back into C$ and get $92.18 Can Dollars. You've spent a week in Cuba your interest rate is 7.82%
10) If you think you're going to need US $ when you come back you can get even somewhat. At the airport exchange your remaining conv. pesos into US$ (there is no tax when you sell pesos only when you buy). You will at least felt that you are getting back at the state a little.
All in all 9 out of 10, because there is never perfection.
