Date of arrival: January 5 - January 12
We paid very little for this trip (under $700) We were a family of 8 adults ages 25 - 57. I have been to Cuba many, many times and always want to go back. I love the country and its people and wanted to share this with my family.
Our flight with Sunwing was great and on time, there and back.
Before I left, I found out the name of the Public Relations person and told her what kind of rooms I would like for my family. My daughter arrived from Vancouver the day before and checked out the rooms that I had requested, which were to be in the main building. She knows my taste and asked to see other rooms on the resort. We were changed to the Cayo Largo building and given ocean front rooms at no extra cost. The views were spectacular and the beach was within a few steps from our rooms. We also had a small pool and pool bar just outside our rooms. The main building, the buffet were about 5 minutes away and the specialty restaurants and disco were about 3 minutes away. The specialty restaurants did not offer us much in the way of good food, but at least we were served here and our food was hot.
This resort is massive and in 1 week, we did not see it all. What we did visit was very impressive.
They are going through a change of ownership to the Occidental chain and we experienced many bumps along the way: food- repetitive and not so good. oh well, there was always fresh pasta, hot dogs and an omelette station. We always go to Cuba knowing that we can get at least that. I would recommend bringing salt, peanut butter, spices, hot sauce or anything special you would like to add to your food. Remember this is a Communist country and they can't always get the supplies they want. When they run out of something, they run out and things are replinished WHENEVER......
The hotel was not very full therefore, not all ammenities were open to us. So what! It's cuba and that is just the way it is there.
The weather was really bad but we made do with what was available to us and had a blast. The disco was a great hit with the "younger" crowd. The Cohiba bar had the better drinks and is open from 5:30pm - 1:00am. There are 3 pools at this hotel and apart from the one outside our room,we practically lived at the big pool where there is a band at night and we could dance.
Staff: generally very friendly, but often could not speak english. Jaimie in the buffet area is the sweetest girl there is and very helpful. Our rooms were cleaned on a daily basis and we had everything we needed. Don't get upset if you don't get enough towels or soap or toilet paper or water. JUST ASK . That's what we did if something was missing.
Beach: stupendous, although we only had 2 days where we could go into the ocean
Rooms: Cayo Largo building is the newest I believe and we had huge rooms. Bring bug spray just in case, but we did not really need it at the time of year we went. View was fantastic with large balconies. Just make sure your balcony door locks as it's easy to jump from balcony to balcony - which works great if you lock yourself out - which sometimes the "younger" members of our group did. There is a safe in the rooms and they will replenish water bottles as you use them up.
We took a day trip to Havana which we arranged at the tour desk - not through Sunwing. We were able to get our own 10 man van with driver and guide for $50.00 each; much cheaper than with Sunwing and we called our own shots when it came to the tour. We even stopped at an orphanage in Matanzas where we brought gifts for the children
All in all, I would return to this resort in the future, except there is more to explore
This resort was very clean, and has so much potential.
