My wife and I (40's) arrived at the Brisas on the 6th January. It took an absolute age to check-in in what seemed like an eastern bloc airport terminal but is in fact the main hotel area with 2 atmosphereless bars and lots of people sitting around looking at a loose end.
After check in we were taken to our room about 300 yards from the main hotel and overlooking a car park. The porter couldnt open the door as the lock was broken. After a 20 minute wait he returned with a key to another room. After a quick call to the reception the maintenance guy visited and said that he couldnt fix the aircon. Not being able to stand staying in a room that smelled musty and moldy we requested a move to another room. Room 3 was a great improvement, large and with a TV that you could almost tune in. Unfortunately although having no light in the bathroom and a broken toilet seat we decided to give it a try and see if maintenance could sort it next day.
Breakfast was pretty ordinary, lunch wasnt as good. The buffet restaurant was just dire, it really was a joke, it reminded me of the sort of stuff you would expect to see at a 9 year olds birthday party. Overcooked chicken or a thin burger with some shredded cabbage, followed by fairy cakes and ice cream..mmmm...
We had a chat with the Rep, explained that we didnt pay to stay in a sub 2 star hotel and when she asked if we would pay to be upgraded we said definitely. She checked what we had paid and immediately offered us a free upgrade to the Bella Costa. The Bella Costa was a breath of fresh air, good food, very helpful staff, clean rooms and most importantly we felt comfortable and that it was a nice place to be.
The good reviews about the Brisas hotel seem to concentrate on how nice Cuba is, or the beach, the dolphins or the helpful staff. These things apply in most hotels in Varadero I guess. My advice is to book elsewhere but if you are already committed to this hotel and you dont feel that it is up to your expectations go and talk to the rep. 3 couples were upgraded from our party and according to the reception staff at Bella Costa its a very regular thing with a number of people from each Brisas party complaining and being moved.
We were delayed 4 hours out and 5 hours back. Apparently this is pretty common. I advise you to upgrade to VIP lounge at Manchester £17 and at Varadero upgrade to VIP for about £13. At Varadero this gets you to a check-in thats faster than the 1st-class passengers ( Boy did they moan) and you also get priority at the queue for the airport tax (unlike the 1-st class people). If you book first class then negotiate this with the rep first. Some people in our group got snotty and moaned instead of asking and she just left them standing in the queue.
Feel free to email me.
