“A fun expereience in the centre of town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2011

Stayed overnight at the end of Jan 2011in a group of 38. We found it a fun place and the group behaved like 'kids' by checking out each others room!. It was refreshing to stay at a place which was different from the impersonal large international hotels experienced previously. We would agree that the rooms are small, and could see how they could suffer from internal noise from the courtyard, but is was quiet before midnight. Probably more disturbing was the external noise from the occasional train after 4am, and the cocks baying every hour on the hour ( or so it seemed). There was no noise from the street in our courtyard room. The street was fairly quiet late on - few motor vehicles but many people. We walked around the town and felt safe.

The courtyard was a delightful place to enjoy the cheap cocktails and beer as well as the evening meal and breakfast. There was a good variety of food of reasonable quality. Not a goumet experience but who goes to Cuba for that.

Altogether it was an enjoyable experience for one night.

We stayed here for a night and liked it. The TripAdvisor reviews are fair, and it depends very much on you whether you like it or not. I quote from the last two reviewers

"The colonial architecture, for me, did not make up for its deficiencies as a hotel. The rooms were small ... Any room where I have to struggle to get past the bed is not acceptable. "

"This hotel is fantastic for a brief stay with its old world charm"

I am closer the position of the second reviewer. Firstly remember this is Cuba, so standards are very different from European ones. The bedrooms are pokey, and there is not enough room to swing the proverbial cat, but the public rooms ooze character. We had drinks in the courtyard, and dinner in the restaurant - and found the barbecued pork very good.

Car parking is a bit of a scam, but is everywhere in Cuba. I had to smile when the porter got into the car to guide me to the parking area, and up popped a cycle rickshaw man to take us back the hundred meters to the hotel. He had been put up to it by the porter, and it was designed to get our custom for a ride round the town later - we did not avail ourselves of his services.

If you are driving yourself there, be warned that everything they say about the hotel being (almost) impossible to find is true. We arrived on the outskirts of Camaguey in belting rain, and up popped a man on a bike hammering on the car window to guide us. We ignored him, and a few miles later he popped up again, knowing exactly where we would get lost. I told him in forceful Spanish to clear off. But it did take us a considerable length of time to get to the hotel (one way narrow streets, not a grid pattern and 90% of streets do not have a name)

The hotel is about 400 meters from the town centre, and we found it a perfectly acceptable touring base.

It was noisy at night. Cubans by their very nature are noisy people. And the clientele of this hotel is virtually all Cuban, so lots of noise. But if you want to experience the real Cuba, then this is it!

The colonial architecture, for me, did not make up for its deficiencies as a hotel. The rooms were small and poorly designed in terms of light switches, luggage storage and locks. Any room where I have to struggle to get past the bed is not acceptable. The hotel was extremely noisy, which was largely due to the noise from the bar and restaurant being channelled up through the floor well spaces. The food was poor and the buffet service area badly designed: for example, the cooking area was in a corner which means that the queue for fried or scrambled egg prevented people from accessing other foods. The hotel is not sited in a particularly desirable part of town and there is no secure parking.
Overall, one night was more than enough. I do not know if there is better in Camaguey, but next time I will try somewhere else.

this hotel is fantastic for a brief stay with it's old style charm. I loved it. That said, the rooms were noisy with ancient air conditioning. Not to be recommended for longer stays.

We have done a trip around cuba and we have met many locals, and we are not difficult about travelling at all. we like authentic travelling.
Camaguey was our worst experience within cuba and especially this hotel because we felt cheated on. When we arrived we got a room with 2 separate beds, and asked the receptionist for a large double bed. He told us that this was only possible if we paid 9 CUC. He behaved very strange. afterwards we found out that this was a lie - he was going to put the money in his pockets!
also, when we arrived with our rental car the guys hanging out on the street in front of the hotel were very pushy, told us ' we are boss of the street here and you can park your car here while unloading your luggage, on condition that you pay for a city trip by taxi-bike.
after that we had to park our car in a (secure) carpark 2 blocks away from the hotel - against payment.
These 2 stories do not give you a great feeling about this hotel and its surroundings
The rooms are okay - the food is not that great (buffet) - it is a place to stay for only 1 night - use camaguey as a transit town. a great colonial building but they have not respected the original building style eg they have place a huge kitch fountain in the inner court place. (which also makes a terrible noise!!)

I really liked this small friendly Colonial style Hotel. The rooms were very traditional, clean and reasonalby comfortable, the small bathroom had the best shower in Cuba!
The rooms were all set round a traditional courtyard as was a bar and the restaurant, the food was of a very good standard fro a 2* Hotel.
The Hotel was a real Gem, but unfortunately in very shabby surroundings, not in the town centre, and in a run down area, one of our party had her bag snatched, a rare occurence and to be fair the local police caught the culprit that night, but an unpleasant experience.
Top Tip
1. Don't go out after dark
2. Have a Mojito in the lovely bar at the front of the Hotel, the best and cheap!
3. Ear plugs may be required for light sleeper, noisy air con and Cockrels at the crack of dawn!
4. Take a Bici Taxi tour of Camaguey, great fun and a safe way to see the sights.
5. Test the water before you get in the shower, it's hot, hot, hot.
6. Visit the local market for great photos and a slice of real Cuban life.

I have often used Tripadvisor for hotel reviews, but this is the first time I felt I needed to write my own. As I was part of a tour there was no problem in locating the hotel. Yes the architecture was amazing and it was crumbling in places but that is no excuse for a dirty hotel. The bathroom tiles behind the door were very dirty, and even wearing flip flops I couldn't face having a shower. The bed sheets and pillow case were clean but the counterpane had many dubious stains. I did complain to my tour manager who spoke to the hotel staff and they imformed me that the windows are soon to be replaced. What that has to do with cleanliness I don't know. There wasn't a great deal of food, or options, and what was on show was uncovered so attracted the flies. If the cockerel doesn't wake you then the train will. Fortunately we were only there for one night
