Arrive to Havana for the first time and you are set for a cultural shock, even if you are a well seasoned traveler. So having a comfortable place to start your adventure in Cuba is a definite must!
I gladly found such a place as soon as I stepped into Casa de Ana y Pepe. This B&B is outstanding for the warmth of its people. Even after traveling for 3 weeks in Cuba and always staying with locals, I still consider this house the best I've been in, for many reasons.
First of all, it's a nice house, nicely located in Vedado, a beautiful neighborhood of Havana. Even if it's a bit far from the city center, you can easily reach Havana Vieja and this offers you the opportunity to see other parts of Havana that you wouldn't normally see if you were to stay accommodated in the center. The house is extremely clean, the rooms are big, airy and quiet, the beds and bed linen are very comfortable and of good quality and you have a lot of privacy. The breakfast is amazing, especially the mouthwatering mango juice...
I haven't met Ana while I was in Havana, so our host was Pepe, her husband. I can only say good things about Pepe and it was a pleasure for me to meet him! He was truly friendly and has gone out of his way to help us. He had a lot of nice suggestions for sightseeings and paladares and I particularly enjoyed talking to him about Cuba. Pepe also helped us planning our trip through the island and gave us contacts for casas particulares in every city that we were planing to visit.
(tip: always call in advanced more than one time and make sure that you are staying in the house you want and not in their friends' house. This is quite a common practice in Cuba: as you arrive to one place they may not have space for you - unlike what they've told you over the phone - and try to accommodate you in a friends' house. The problem with this is that their second choice might not have been your second choice, and many times the quality standards of the houses are different. So be prepared for this event and have a couple of extra phone numbers for casas particulares, in case you don't like their suggestion. There are plenty of them in all cities and it shouldn't be a problem to find alternatives.)
Finally, our visit to Cuba (at least the way we wanted to do it) wouldn't be possible without renting a car and Pepe was indefatigable in helping us find one, when all hope seemed lost! I think he found the last available car in Havana!
(just one more tip: book your car way in advance and confirm as much as possible that it is indeed reserved otherwise you might have an unpleasant last minute surprise...)
Overall I was very pleased with Casa de Ana y Pepe and I highly recommend it as a nice starting point to your visit to Cuba. You wont regret it!
