We have just returned from a week's stay at the Saratoga and were pleased that we chose this hotel. Check in was fine - we were third in a short queue and the doormen showed us to a seat and took our bags until we were checked in. As we were seated at the check in desk, a waiter brought us complimentary iced drinks, which was a nice touch.
We had a room on the 7th floor, whch is totally non-smoking. Although these rooms do not have doors onto a balcony they have a great view of the Capitolio and right across the rooftops to the Fort. After a very hot and sticky day's trek through the city streets, beating off the hustlers, it was great to get back to our room, shower and lounge in the bathrobes on the cushioned window seats which run the entire length of the room watching all the comings and goings in the surrounding streets.
The cleanliness of the room was fine, no problems apart from the endless balls of white fluff shed by the bathrobes - every time we moved we left a trail of "snow" .
Our room rate did not include breakfast, but we strolled down each morning to the Pasteleria next door to the Hotel Inglaterra on the Parque Central and had delicious freshly baked croissants and cafe con leche (for about 2 pesos each), watching the world go by. Most evenings we ate simple meals at a great bar close by where all the staff were very friendly - El Castillo de Farnes, a few steps from La Floridita. Each night we returned to the Saratoga's rooftop bar for our last drink watching the city at night and enjoying the breezes. We ate in the Saratoga's restaurant on our last night and found the food and wine selection very good.
As we were out during the day, we did not get to meet our chambermaids but they left us a couple of lovely notes and did some great heart-
shapes with the towels and bed covers.
We used the hotel's currency changing facility which was fine as regards rates and also extremely convenient.
The room safe was the digital kind where you set your own code and we had no problems at all relating to any security issues.
The location of the hotel is great - close enough to walk to all the popular destinations but not right in the noisiest part of town. Yes, it is on a busy-ish road but being on the 7th floor meant that it was not too noisy - except for when the Saturday morning market started to set up at 05:45, but hey, you're in Havana!
