“A really charming hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2011

The hotel is situated between Old Havana and Central Havana and is in easy walking distance of most of the old city attractions. Unlike most modern hotels, the Saratoga has a real authentic and genuine feel which gives it a wonderful atmosphere. Our room was a good size, clean, very comfortable, and had everything we needed, it may not have been as luxurious as what might be expected elsewhere, but this in no way detracted from our stay. There was a little street noise, however as a "glass half full" type person this added to the whole Havana experience. We made use of the rooftop pool area as a relaxing sanctuary in the centre of what can feel like a very intense city. The hotel staff we encountered were very good and I would certainly like to stay at the Saratoga again.

I stayed here for 2 nights at the end of November. We were orginally on the first floor over looking the square and it was very very noisy but then they had to move us to the 7th floor and that was much less noisy so I would recommend going higher up if possible! Lovely roof top pool and great breakfast here. Only thing I would say... don't get a massage in the spa. I paid for a 90 minute massage as a treat but the guy spent half the time on the phone talking in my ear and then left hot rocks on me for half an hour and walked off! Not worth the money... even though it was quite cheap.

great hotel all in all!

Room Tip: Go higher up the hotel! not first floor

Stayed for 5 nights recently. We had a room overlooking the park which was a little noisy but otherwise excellent - large and very comfortable - other reviewers suggest asking for a courtyard room and I couldn't disagree. Reception, doormen, concierge all excellent and the location puts one within walking distance of shopping, sights and live music. We weren't too impressed by breakfast but perhaps we have been spoiled elsewhere - I agree the coffee was great. The rooftop pool/bar has a great view and provides relaxation after a day tramping the streets. Would I stay again - yes, in a courtyard room.

Room Tip: Ask for courtyard

Had an excellent stay at the Saratoga.

Hotel is in a fantastic position with most of the sights and places of interest about 15 minutes walk away if you go to them directly - the fun part is not going directly but just wandering around the back streets, which are perfectly safe. You will get hawkers trying to sell you car rides, horse and cart rides, taxis etc. but this is a tourist destination and has to be expected - get away from the Capitol building and Parque Central and this disappears quickly. Make the effort to explore the back streets and the real Havana smacks you in the face alive and kicking - vibrant, friendly and easy to get around.

Inside of the hotel has been excellently refurbished - thankfully not in a plastic, bulk standard fashion as with some places. Original features are retained and it still has a good mix of faded grandeur about the place with adds to the character rather than making it look tired in any way. The roof top terrance has fantastic views across the entire city - even if you're not staying here it's worth a sunrise / sunset visit at least.

Rooms were excellent and surprisingly quiet - especially if you pre-book one of the courtyard facing rooms. Well worth asking for if you want to get away from the standard city noise you can expect from any city hotel.

Read on here a few comments on service. This is hit and miss across the whole of Cuba. If you're expecting fantastic service everywhere and on every occasion, then simply do not go to Cuba. The doormen, receptionists and maids were all excellent. The bar service was good. The male concierge is simply one of the best I have ever used (female one not so good, but that's more to do with her personality and probable discomfort of English). Breakfast service was a bit hit and miss, but if you attempt a bit of Spanish and make an effort to at least say please and thank you in Spanish it goes a long way. A lot of people overlook this basic courtesy and are then surprised that get equally curt service by return.

Food - stayed on bed and breakfast basis only as never eat in hotels when staying in cities. Always best to get out and about for lunch and dinner. Breakfast was ok - usual range of both fruit, continental, selection of eggs, bacon, sausage, cold meats, cheeses etc. Constantly refilled when empty. The strong black coffee is excellent and gets you moving in the morning. If you want great food at lunchtime or in the evening, walk out the hotel door, turn right, walk about 75m and go into Los Nardos - fantastic.

Use the Concierge to book vintage car rides and tables at local Paladar's for evening meals.

Room Tip: Pre-book courtyard facing rooms or ask for a room on floor 4 or above.

Spend a couple of days here and at the Pargue Central. The Saratoga was equally good...actually the rooftop view and pool was a bit better. The locations are about the same. This hotel was a bit more expensive.

Room Tip: We did have an "interior room" but it was quiet and fine.

We were in Havana for the Friends of Partagas anniversary party. The Cigar factory was located within one block. The staff was extremely attentive and the hotel had a very good exchange rate for our currency needs. A beautifully restored hotel.

Room Tip: Better exchange rate than banks

4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2011

My partner and I stayed at the hotel from the 1st-4th November on a B&B basis, as part of our twin centre holiday in Cuba, booked through Thomsons.

Following an early morning flight into Havana we arrived at the hotel at around midday and I was impressed with my first sights of the hotel. After being shown to the reception area we were ushered to a reception desk and offered a seat at one of the three reception desks. The male receptionist we were greeted by, I initially felt was a bit rude as he left us sitting at the desk for a couple of minutes whilst he continued on with his paperwork and answering the phone. However he then proceeded to check us in and provide us with the information we needed giving us his full attention. Unfortunately, as we had arrived at the hotel early our room was not ready for us to go to. My partner and I, did not let this trouble us though and were advised by the receptionist of where we could go to grab a bite to eat and a drink. The receptionist then arranged for our luggage to be stored away whilst we went to eat somewhat changing my initial thoughts of him.

We located the Pool Bar Restaurant on the top floor. All I can say is WOW…. What an amazing place to sit and take in the great views of Havana whilst enjoying a Mojito or two. The service up there was excellent. The staff were always friendly and ready to take your order, something that we found occurred on the several or so times we visited this bar during our stay. We also ate on two occasions in the bar and were very satisfied with the meals served. The pizzas and salads are very tasty and well worth the value of money we paid for them.

Having grabbed a bite to eat and a refreshing drink or two we returned to reception to be informed our room was now ready. We had booked a Junior Suite and were offered Room 707. Our luggage was brought to our room by a porter. We found the room to be of a high standard. It was more than big enough for the two of us and the bathroom even more so. It had everything we wanted and needed for the three nights we were to stay there and was cleaned daily. The bed was very comfortable and although we overlooked the road and the traffic did appear to go on late into the night I felt that I enjoyed three decent nights sleep, nothing that a decent pair of earplugs would help cut out though if it was to affect you that badly. I however actually felt the noise from the street and the views from the windows added to the ambience of being in Havana one of the most cultured cities in the world.

During our stay we were given a complimentary meal in the Anacaona Restaurant. We believe we were given this as the hotel made a mistake with our room booking which having spoken to our rep was swiftly rectified by the hotel. We opted to eat at this restaurant on our first night. Had we not been offered this though we probably wouldn’t have chosen to eat in the hotel restaurant for an evening meal as we wanted to experience as much of Cuban culture as possible. Having said that, the service provided in the restaurant was good and the food of an average standard although there take on panna cotta was very amusing as appeared more like a blancmange.

As we were on a B&B basis we ate again in the Anacaona Restaurant each morning for breakfast. Had I been staying on a Room Only basis I would not pay the 20 CUC they were asking for this and would of opted to go out into the town and found something local. We found the breakfast was quite basic for the standard of the hotel however we found enough to fill us both up although there was very little choice.

Overall this hotel exceeded my expectations having read some negative reviews prior to my arrival. It is situated in an ideal location and only a few hundred metres away from the centre of Old Havana. It provides some beautiful sights from its rooftop and its décor reflects that of a quality boutique style hotel in Cuba. I can safely say that if I ever return to Havana, I would be happy to book this hotel again.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor on the front of the hotel if you wish to observe Cuban life passing by. Room 70...
