After 4 days at the Iberostar varadero, an all inclusive, and all new cultural experience for us, the Saratoga was an oasis of calm sophistication.
Located in the central parque area and close to all the Old Town atttractions, this is no business/tousits hotel with loads of load mouth Europeans!
Check in(and out)
Was a relaxed 'sit down' affair...again, no swipe of the VISA! and bags taken to the room with the utmost effeciency.
Bar & Restaurant
Bar in a seperate room was nice and calm...apart from when the Rugby was on! and the restaurant was nice...the food was only OK and as I've said before..check your bill!!
Room
Just fantastic....ours had no external view but it was fitted out in a 5 star way with an amazing bathroom. All clean and very new.
Pool
Roof top pool was fairly small but great views and a nice bar with good service
Breakfast
Small selection but not that bad...or good.
Terrace bar
Just the perfect place to have a Mohito and cigar after a day in the city. Great snacks as well My favorite place in the hotel...just great!
Overall a great hotel without loads of tourists! A bit more expensive than others but perfect for couples. Staff were trying to act 'a bit cool' and could do better but we loved this hotel...the calm after the storm.

I am confused by all of these reviews slating this hotel. The hotel itself is lovely and I found the staff courteous and helpful. They are very formal and I suppose some may confuse this with aloofness.
Our room was fantastic and very clean. My only criticism was the poor water pressure from a very big shower! The maids were always very friendly and did a great job of making up the room.

Before breakfast on our last day we asked if we could stay in the room a little longer but were told we would have to pay 50CUC. I was slightly miffed and must have shown this, as when we later checked out, the receptionist, without being prompted, explained the reason for this and apologised for our inconvenience - exellent customer service.

Our flight was cancelled so we then had to book another night there.
When we checked out the next morning the Sales Manager agreed to let us stay in our room until 5.30pm as the pool was out of order and we had nothing to do for the day. Again excellent!

The food is substandard but the best I had in Havana and Trinidad so I can hardly complain. They make an effort to get it right and champagne being available at breakfast is a nice touch.

It is a new hotel so lacks some of the personality of others but I would rather have a lovely room and service!

In summary - an excellent hotel with staff who do really try.

Hotel Saratoga is probably the best place to stay in Havana, so if you're put off by the bad reviews, you may as well stay home. It's clean, the service is friendly, the rooms are a good size and well maintained. The restaurant is average, but there are better places to eat in the city if you look for them. The pool area on the roof is fantastic, especially after walking around in the heat all day. It's got an amazing view, and it's a great place to relax.

I am quite dismayed by some of the poor reviews of this hotel.
People planning on travelling to Cuba and Havana need to understand that the standard of luxury in accommodation there is different to the top level 5 star hotels we have in the UK, Ireland and Europe. Havana is a crumbling wreck of what it once was - which is part of it's charm. So you are glad to get any level of luxury considering your surroundings when you get there. That aside, the level of accommodation, hotel facilities, service and friendliness of service is absolutely excellent. I would have no hesitation in recommending the Saratoga and if I was going back to Havana, it is the only hotel I would consider for myself. The staff and the owners have done themselves proud - a fine hotel.

We stayed here for 3 nights in September and loved the hotel. We stayed in I guess one of the suites which was a 2 story room, living downstairs and bedroom upstairs. It was a really great room and nicely fitted out and loads of space. The swimming pool on the roof is the highlight of this place and we had a pizza up there one night in the rain and it was the highlight of our trip. The view from the roof is truly magnificent.

Service was a bit hit and miss, the guys on the roof being the best. The food was nice enough in the other eateries though not fining dining but given we had heard bad things about the food in Havana I was pleasantly surprised. It was a good location though given it is in the middle of things it can be a bit noisy in the rooms facing the street. I don't like noise myself but did not mind this too much cause Havana had such a great vibe.

I would recommend this hotel if going to Havana.
